Security Update Project We're essentially there. The new parking lot and pedestrian gates are operational and we've installed perimeter fencing along the northern and western sides of the property. As of this writing, the fence contractor has installed temporary chain link fencing in place of the 330 feet of decorative fencing that was delayed in shipping. With the temporary fencing added to the 330 feet of permanent chain link fencing already installed, the land perimeter is now secured. We finished that work in the first week of June. Motion detectors and lights are operational, and we intend to phase out the use of security guards. The gate project was planned with the intent to allow MVYC members to be able to use their existing cards to enter the property by car or on foot. This was accomplished with relatively little pain and lots of help from MVYC members. Thanks to Don Basham for donating the magnetic locks for the pedestrian gate and thanks to John Leary for donating his professional services to install that mag-lock system. In an addition to the gates and fences, the swimming pool entry procedure will soon be switched over to key card and key fob access. For the first time we will have some degree of confidence that people on the property and using the pool are MVYC members and escorted guests.

And a further thanks to the attending Club members who performed the No Rain Dance to chase off a mid-summer storm to give the party clear sailing under a clear night's sky. you join us. To all of the rest of the membership: Get to know these new folks! They are all great additions to the Club.

With our wealth of new members and a strong batch of pending applications, we are extremely pleased to report that we are very near to our membership capacity of 230 families. If you know any one who may be interested in joining the Club and who would make a great member, now is the time for them to apply in order to avoid having to be placed on a waiting list. We are also pleased to introduce you to a number of our newest member families: Jo-Ann McNally Muir Jo-Ann and her family, sons Mike, Greg and Dan, are returning to the Club after a somewhat extended hiatus. Jo-Ann, a recovering attorney, teaches government and psychology at Mount Vernon High School where she also coaches the novice boys' crew team. Mike graduated from Guilford and is home when he is not being deployed by FEMA or AmeriCorps, Greg is a senior at Yale, and Dan will be a junior at Princeton. In addition, you may have met their Golden Retriever, Galactus, who enjoys swimming at the boat ramp. They were MVYC members for about fifteen years back when the boys were on the MVYC swim team and then took a break from membership for about six years when the boys aged out of swim team and headed off to college and the family began to spend most summers in New Hampshire. With at least some of the family home in the summer these days, they are delighted to be able to rejoin the club for swimming and social activities. Welcome back Jo-Ann.

Social Committee Report

Contributed by Amy Walker, Social Chair

"Hi there," fellow Yacht Club members! In the past month, we have had two particularly festive events: the Wounded Warriors Day and the New Member's party. Wounded Warriors: MVYC Stone Soup is quite tasty! The first part is a repeat of an earlier email sent. If you had read it, skip to paragraph 2 but the effect will not be the same. There are many different versions of the Legend Of Stone Soup. Here is mine: Two weary travelers/soldiers come to a village in search of food. They have a hard time finding any, so they announce to the villagers, "Bring what you've got and put it into a pot. We're making stone soup." One villager donated a pot, one the firewood. The travelers found a fancy stone and threw it into the pot with some water. Slowly, curious villagers donated a carrot, a potato, etc. until they had enough for a tasty soup. The soup ended up feeding the whole village and people got to know each other. Each person's donation of a little bit of this and a little bit of that made a huge impact. On May 29th, we hosted the Wounded Warriors and their families from Walter Reed. It was a successful event due to many villagers (aka- club members) who brought "what they've got and put it into the pot." Any extra money we made will be donated to Walter Reed Army Hospital. Special thanks to Commodore Bill Gard for coordinating the day with Walter Reed. Great thanks to Troy Clayton, chef and owner of Geranio's Restaurant in Old Town (club member too!) for donating loads of his delicious pasta salad. My personal thanks to Petra Gray for securing the donation of 22 cases of water and soda from Coca Cola. Thanks to the Power Fleet and Don Basham for coordinating the boat rides for the soldiers and their families. Though this small group of 4+ people had a huge impact, so did you! Thank you to the following volunteers for your donation of time, talent, tasty treats and/or trusty vessel: Barb Baker, Lauren and Chris Bazel, Don Basham, Jim Borches, Bonnie Brenneman, Anna and Rich Diefendorf, Gene Diotalevi, Steve and Kim Donock, Chris Ellis, Julian Fincher, Jerry and Petra Gray, Jim Gordon, Anne Hagemann, Mike Holland, Theresa Keith, Marianne Ketels, Jeff and Lu Kirkland, Jim Lexo, Chuck Manka, Judy McCarthy, Jane Mutnik, Traci Newcomb, Dan and Chris O'Keefe, Frank Quigley, Dawne Ragland, Greg and Susan Rehe, Eric Rehe, Claudia and Ron Reinsel, Julia Ross, Chris Ruckman, Harriet Singleton, Alexi Stavropoulos, Kathy and Terry Stot, Dave Walker, Des and Ann Wassell, Diane Wilson , and Theresa Wilson. I apologize to anyone that I missed, but please know that someone other than me saw you helping and appreciated it. Now folks, you can see how wonderful this club really is! At the end of every Stone Soup story that I have read, the recipe is included. Here is my MVYC version: 130 club members, 17 wounded warriors and their families, 120 lbs of chicken, a load of pasta salad, 22 cases of water and soda, 11L of wine, 3 kegs of beer, 20 heads of lettuce, 6 boats, 1 music maestro, a few watermelons, a couple of fishing poles and worms, 1 heap of food donations, and 2 tons of fun. New Member's Party Well, if Wounded Warriors didn't float your boat, I bet the New Member's party did. Who can resist a "Love Boat" theme party. Thanks to the new members who were able to attend, giving the current members a chance to get to know you. Although the committee had to weather a few storms while setting up, it all worked out. Once again, Clay and Jen Collier hosted a great party. If you don't know them, get to know them. You won't be able to stop laughing when you are with them. Thanks to Ron Reinsel for his eloquent introductions. Ron's speeches are always a favorite of mine. Thanks to the committee who made it all possible: Clay and Jen Collier, Lauren and Chris Bazel, Claudia and Ron Reinsel, Jack and Brenda Sanders, Maureen Mason, Chris O'Keefe, Marianne Ketels, Rob and Sherry Catron, Chris Ruckman, Bill Gard, Alexi and Christine Stavropoulos. Have a super and safe summer! Please join us at the pool on July 4th for some food, fun and festivities. As always, if you have party ideas that you would like to share please contact me at deewalk11@verizon.net. A TGIF is a perfect way to start hosting a party. The Wirth's, together with son Dillon (age 7) and daughter McKenna (age 10), have recently returned to the Riverside Estates community where they lived from 2002 to 2006. Kevin coaches soccer and Erin helps out at their school whenever possible. As a family they eager to join MVYC's active boating, swimming and social activities. Although something of a step down in size from Kevin's previous command, they have just taken delivery of a (new to them) 24 foot Sea Ray Sundeck and look forward to getting out on the water with friends old and new.

Oliver and Danielle Albers Oliver and Danielle are half of a second generation at MVYC. Danielle is the daughter of long time Club members Sherman and Pam Broka and grew up in the Club including as an active swimmer on the Dolphins and learning to sail on the Point.. Oliver and Danielle live in Hollin Hall Village with their dog Huck and are just celebrating their fourth wedding anniversary. Danielle is a teacher at Hayfield Elementary School and Oliver, who grew up in Columbus, Ohio, works with NASDAQ. In their free time, Oliver and Danielle like to play sports and participate in other outdoor activities. Both play soccer for a coed team and also enjoy running and riding their bikes along the Mount Vernon Trail. They love being on and around the water. Oliver tries to fish as much as possible in his free time and hopes to catch a snakehead one day. In addition to the many social events at the Club, Oliver and Danielle are also looking forward to being partners on the Broka's 21 foot Sea Ray. Notice is also given, pursuant to Article XVI, Paragraph 7C, of the MVYC Bylaws, that the following families have submitted applications and could be offered membership in MVYC when an opening becomes available: McKie and Barbara Campbell 9418 Old Mount Vernon Road Alexandria, VA 22309 James Davenport and Maritza Zermeno 9233 Forest Haven Drive Alexandria, VA 22309 Donald (Joe) English and Ainsley English 1307 Gatewood Drive Alexandria, VA 22307 Glenn and Zita Stone 9521 Mount Vernon Landing Alexandria, VA 22309

Bosuns Whistle from Page 1... Security Cameras A committee of board members and non-board members led by Steve Donock submitted a policy document to the Board that lists several recommendations for use of security cameras. The Board will take the recommendations under consideration and MVYC should be implementing security camera coverage in the near future. Newcomers' Party You will no doubt read about the Newcomers' Party elsewhere in this issue of The BEACON, but I have to take my hat off to Jen and Clay Collier for running one of the finest parties I've attended in a long time. They were ably assisted by Brenda and Jack Sanders, Claudia Reinsel, and Lauren and Chris Bazel. And thanks to Rob Catron for running the cleaning crew before the party.

On The Docks
Submitted by Jerry Gray, Marina Chair
marina@mountvernonyachtclub.com

During the month of June we have nearly occupied every slip in the marina. We actually still have two small slips available for boats 20 feet or less, so if you have that second boat give me call and we'll see if it fits. On the weekend of our 3rd Annual Wounded Warrior's picnic our Gas Dock volunteer for the weekend, Tom Kline, informed me that the pump was not working, we discovered that there was no electricity getting to the pump. A number of members helped troubleshoot the problem and temporary repairs were made during the following week and permanent repairs are underway. Thanks to everyone for your help on this. Gas sales have been brisk due to the good weather and prices are once again under $3.00; the price in mid-June was $2.80. We added three new pilings to C dock to allow 24-26 foot boats to tie up more securely. I would like to thank Jamie Hamilton for acquiring and installing these for the club. The Dinghy dock was hauled out and put on dry land during the second week in June, Rick Mullins, Bill Gard and Jim Gordon and others all helped to either (1) get it out of the water and remove the old pilings or (2) re-fashion the dock so that it fits inside our property line. We hope to have the Dinghy dock back in service by the end of June.

Toon Fleet News

By Bart Hewitt, Toon Fleet Spokesweenie

English is a highly complex, and sometimes baffling language. For instance, take the important, but dreadfully convoluted issue of Toons. On one hand, you have your Toons what are a category of water craft (and a superb one at that). These Toons are considered "vehicles," in that they carry people from place to place: people who need to get to work, for instance, or people who wonder why the Beacon Editor would allow this amateurish article to be published at all. And there are many other mechanical things in the category of "vehicles," like cars, trucks, unicycles, bootyboards, etc. But this raises a serious issue on the horns of a serious dilemma. Take this serious example: you have your "pon-toons," and your "car-toons." Why, you can even have "Whistle-ahappy" toons. Isn't this annoyingly confusing? I mean, a "PONtoon" represents a type of boat, whereas a "CARtoon" describes an editorial drawing what is intended to humiliate, say, the BP Oil Company. How can this happen? When they invented the English language, why didn't they resolve this dilemma? Who elected the idiots who invented the English language, anyway? At the very least, we need to know whether it was a Republican or a Democrat or an Independent or something, so that in the next election we can choose someone of a more serious party what will straighten this mess out. Personally, seriously, my vote goes to Don Basham.

Enjoy the summer. And finally, the Nautical term of the month: "Touch and Go." This referred to a ship's keel touching the bottom and getting right off again. (A familiar occurrence for many members transiting Dogue Creek)

Report: Chesapeake Bay Y acht Club Association

Contributed by Jacque Knight, CBYCA Representative

CBYCA and MVYC boaters will want to be aware of and keep their eyes on several key issues likely to reappear on the 2011 legislative calendar in Virginia. While federal offshore drilling initiatives may be stalled due to the catastrophe in the Gulf of Mexico and concern about interference with military naval traffic off the Virginia shore, interest seems to remain in tapping into royalties and revenues from offshore natural gas and oil drilling. House Bill 900, introduced by a new delegate from Fairfax County, Barbara Comstock, would have used 80 per cent of income from future drilling for the transportation trust fund, which is always an issue in Virginia. The remaining 20 percent would have gone into implementation of a plan by the Secretary of Natural Resources for cleanup of the Chesapeake Bay and other waters in the state that have been designated by the U. S. Environmental Protection Agency as impaired. The bill was referred to the Committee on Appropriations, but CBYCA boaters will want to follow any future legislation dealing with future drilling off the shores and near access to the Chesapeake. Other perennial issues likely to show up on next year's legislative calendar are the Virginia debate about mandatory personal flotation devices (life jackets) for children 12 and under, and changes in the boating safety education requirements. In the last session, a bill was referred to committee that would have exempted persons from having to take a boating safety course if they had in the past possessed a valid operator's license issued by the U.S. Coast Guard. Under the law that is now in effect and will be required for all motorboat operators by 2016, persons are in compliance if they currently possess a valid USCG license to operate a vessel. This year's July 1 safe boating education deadline will require that all personal watercraft operators 50 years old or younger have proof of having completed an approved boating education course. Information is available on the Virginia Department of Game and Inland Fisheries website: http://www.dgif.virginia.gov/boating/education/requirement. Another issue that did not make it into law in 2010 but could muster some support in 2011 is land conservation. A bill that died in the Committee on General Laws and Technology would have enabled the secretaries of Agriculture and Forestry and Natural Resources to begin developing a database to keep track of land conservation and onsite best management practices that limit the amount of nutrients and sediments entering the waters of the commonwealth and feeding into the Chesapeake Bay. A Senate Joint Resolution that was shelved in the Committee on Rules, SJR 35, would have requested a study of tidal shoreline management in the Commonwealth. The resolution noted that one third of all the shorelines in the Chesapeake Bay are classified as eroding and that some areas lose as much as 11 inches of shoreline a year. It is estimated that 85 percent of the Chesapeake Bay shoreline is still privately owned, and the resolution stated that it is "critical to provide education to landowners on the benefits of living shorelines that employ natural habitat elements.

TV Fund Thank-You
Contributed by Mike Holland

The Memorial Day weekend was a nonstop fun fest at MVYC. The Wounded Warriors had a great time at our club. There were boat rides, fishing, games for kids and plenty of delicious food. I would like to thank all the captains that took out the Wounded Warriors and their families on boat trips that afternoon. The fun rolled into Sunday, when many of us rafted up at Pohick Bay. There were 25 power boats and a sailboat that rafted up just inside the bay. Included were several new members who took a chance to see what this raft up was all about, and they were not disappointed. They were welcomed with open arms to walk about the many boats and meet new friends. Their children enjoyed making new friends as they spent a good part of the afternoon tubing. Some of the guys had some really smooth moves on water skis. Throughout the day there were many onlookers that were in awe of the size of our raft up. Several dropped a hook a short distance from us and watched as we went from boat to boat - laughing sharing food and drinks, and just having a heck of a good time. As the sun started to set, the boats started to break loose and head back to the club. Several of us watched the moon as it came up over the Maryland shore line, then woke up the next morning to calm water and a beautiful, quiet sunrise. The tubing and water skiing continued in the morning. Cody Fincher went tubing for the first time. He was sandwiched in a tube between Alex and her friend, and had a great big smile as Jerry pulled him around the bay. The girls looked out for him, and now, all he wants to do is to go tubing. On his second try, Jerry's grandson Blaine got up on skis for the first time and just would not go down. It was a great way to end the long weekend. In the weeks to follow, I had a chance to catch up with several new members that were at the raft up. They expressed how much fun they had and how wonderful everyone was that day. They had no regrets whatsoever when it came to joining MVYC. Thanks to all that came out that day. Thank you, Jerry, for letting me use your Whaler that afternoon to pull the kids on the tube and several skiers. Coming up July 3rd is the 8th annual Parade of Lights. We can catch the tide as it starts coming in around 8pm, and sunset is not until 8:37pm. Dig out those lights, make sure your generators and inverters are working and light up your boats. If you would like more information on this fun event you can email me at powerfleet@mountvernonyachtclub.com. July 16th-18th is the PRYCA float in at Port Kinsale. We have many boats signed up, and we will be taking another shot at getting MVYC back into 1st place. August 20-22nd is our annual Red Brown memorial boat trip. Last year was a huge success at St Mary's Yacht Center and we plan to make this year a trip to remember. There will be more information to come about this trip as the date gets closer. I hope you see you all out on the river.

You may have noticed that the old, boxy, power hungry, non-HD TVs have magically been replaced by new, slim, sleek, energy efficient LCD HD TVs. You may ask yourself, "Self, how did this happen?" Well, it wasn't magic. After several months of collections, (OK, several months of arm twisting, guilt tripping and knee breaking) the TV fund was able to collect enough money from our generous members to purchase four new TVs and one Blue Ray DVD player, along with wall mounts and wiring for the clubhouse. But this was just part of the work. The removal of the old TVs and the installation of the new TVs is where the real work occurred. Jerry Gray, Jim Gordon, Russell Poe, Alexi Stavropoulos, and Julian Fincher all assisted in the installation of the two TVs in the Crow's Nest. This was no small task, given the size of the TVs they were replacing. A special shout-out goes to Alexi Stavropoulos and his trusty side kick Julian Fincher. Not only was Alexi deeply involved in the planning stages, he ran the wiring to the TVs, configured the sound system and set up all of the remote controls. Alexi also provided and installed the new Oak panel on which the TV above the main floor bar is now mounted. Julian helped to keep the installation on track with his engineering prowess and his common-sense approach to the work at hand. Thanks to Greg Rehe, we had the new HD FIOS boxes in time for the installation of the TVs. Below is the full list of members and committees whom generously donated to the TV fund.
