What Is Nanopaint? Nanopaint is a type of covering or coating that is applied to surfaces in a manner similar to oil or water based paint.

The main difference with nanopaint is that the compound contains microscopic particles that are known as nanotubes. A nanotube helps to create an effective barrier that prevents many types of external influence from interfering with the function of a given device. The process of nanopainting is not unlike that of any type of paint project. The compound can be applied with the use of a brush or with a paint gun. Nanopaint is a liquid, so it is spread in an even coat and allowed to dry. Once in place, the nanopaint hardens into a coat that makes it possible to pass on or block electronic signals, depending on the programming of the nanotubes. While still in the developmental stages, nanopaint is already seen as an effective means of dealing with a number of different issues. The application of nanopaint on the exterior of a building could be used to block infrared rays and thus help to keep the interior of the space cooler, while also making it possible to absorb solar energy on days that are sunny but cool. The result of this application would mean expending less energy to keep the space at a comfortable temperature regardless of the outside weather conditions. The use of nanopaint may also provide a means of dealing with some of the simple etiquette issues that have arisen since the advent of the cell phone. Painting walls in theaters, classrooms, libraries and other public spaces where ringing phones are not acceptable with nanopaint would result in blocking the signals. This would mean less incidents of people being subjected to overhearing phone conversations when attention should be focused elsewhere.

Nanotechnology Coating

Coatings may be applied to surfaces that render materials scratch and corrosion resistant. Advances in nanotechnology and nanoscience could produce more efficacious methods of delivering drugs with fewer side effects, methods to purify air, and procedures that could repair damaged body tissues.

The nanotools would be controlled by physicians via remote control, enabling them to perform diagnoses and treatments that would be impossible to realize using the traditional techniques. Commercial nanotechnology uses include the bulk form presence of nanoparticles in products such as cosmetics, protective coatings, stain resistant clothing, computers, and sports equipment.

nanopaint Nanopaint is a coating that can modify the properties of a surface or substance according to user-defined parameters. Like ordinary paint, nanopaint is applied as a liquid and then hardens. The liquid contains a suspension of microscopic particles called nanotube s that alter their behavior as external conditions change or when a specific command is given. Nanopaint is in the research-and-development phase. Engineers have produced a prototype nanopaint that can block RF (radio frequency) fields in much the same way as a metal, such as copper, can do. When applied to the interior walls of a building, the material can selectively pass or impede signals to and from cell phones, portable radios or other wirelessdevices. Potential applications of nanopaint abound. One especially interesting idea is the use of nanopaint on the exteriors of buildings to alter their infrared (IR) reflecting or absorbing properties depending on external conditions. This could improve energy efficiency by helping structures absorb thermal energy on cool but sunny days, reflect it on hot days, retain thermal energy on cold nights and radiate it away on warm nights. Specialized nanopaints might perform an almost endless number of other functions, such as:

Block cell phone signals in inappropriate environments, such as theaters, hospitals and funerals.

Give glass the ability to become more or less opaque as desired. Give the surfaces of motor vehicles or industrial machines the ability to repair themselves when damaged.

Allow the textures of surfaces to be altered at will. Discourage the growth of pathogens such as bacteria or viruses. Repel or neutralize toxic chemicals, acids or other corrosive agents.

Shanghai plans to paint the exterior walls of World Expo pavilions with a newly invented nanotech-based coating material which acts as a "permanent air purifier," a local scientist said yesterday. If the coating proves to be effective at air cleaning, it will be gradually used on buildings across Shanghai in order to thoroughly improve the city's air quality, scientists said. "The coating material will become an ever-extensive permanent air purifier to improve the local environment," Shi Liyi, vice director of the Nano-Science and Technology Research Center at Shanghai University, told Shanghai Daily during an international nanotech symposium yesterday. The coating project, which is funded by the city's Science and Technology Commission and the central government with 1.8 million yuan (US$216,800), started early this year and more than 20 researchers are taking part. The core of the material is a titanic-oxide-based compound that comprises particles at nanoscale achieved by advanced nano-technology. Exposed under sunlight, the substance can automatically decompose the major ingredients that cause air pollution such as formaldehyde and nitride. Nanotechnology refers to building things with atoms and molecules to perform specific tasks at a scale of as small as 10,000th of human hair. Because each particle of the new coating material is much smaller than a normal one, there is less space between any two such particles, making sure that the substance can very effectively decompose air pollutants if painted upon the high-rise walls, researchers said. The material can also be applied to paving road surfaces.

Shi said that the new coating material will be used in some public buildings next year and will be eventually used to paint the World Expo pavilions.

That would be the paintwork on the sedan, wagon and coupe versions of the compact Mercedes-Benz model, which feature a new type of paint technology that took the German manufacturer four years to develop. ''The new clear lacquer features ground-breaking nano-technology,'' explained JoAnne Caza of Mercedes-Benz Canada, and it ''ensures that the new product is substantially more scratchresistant than conventional paint. This new technology represents our latest significant contribution towards considerably enhancing the already exemplary long-term quality and value retention of its passenger cars.'' Nano-technology paint is also being used on the E, S, CL, SL and SLK models in metallic and non-metallic finishes, Caza said, and other models from the Stuttgart-based firm will soon be given this world-exclusive covering. Caza said the clear lacquer contains microscopically small ceramic particles and they harden in the paintshop oven, ''forming an extensively cross-linked network. The paint is thus more effectively protected against scratches caused by mechanical car-washes, for example. The nano-particles provide a three-fold improvement in the scratch resistance of the paintwork and ensure visibly enhanced gloss over an extended period of time.'' Following extreme tests in a laboratory car-wash, Caza related, Mercedes engineers noted an improvement of about 40 per cent in paint gloss compared to conventional clear lacquers. Mercedes-Benz also carried out extensive testing on the nano-particle clearcoat in both laboratory and everyday conditions. ''Even after several years of use,'' Caza said, ''the more than 150 test cars involved in the long-term testing program displayed significantly greater scratch resistance and enhanced paint gloss compared to vehicles with conventional paintwork.'' On top of that, Caza said, the newly developed paint system also meets the stringent Mercedes standards in terms of the protection it offers from chemicals in the environment.

Advances in the area of nano-technology have allowed tiny ceramic particles (each less than a millionth of a millimetre in size) to be integrated into the molecular structure of the binding agent, Caza said. ''These particles float around freely at first in the liquid clearcoat, before cross-linking as the drying process takes effect,'' Caza explained. ''The particles link with one another in such a way as to create an extremely dense and smoothly structured network at the paint surface, and this provides a protective layer and ensures that the new nano-particle clearcoat is considerably more scratch-resistant than conventional paintwork.'' http://www.auto123.com/en/news/car-news/mercedes-benz-nano-paint?artid=21942&pg=1 New pollution eating paint will clean the air A new form of paint that can absorb some of the noxious gases from vehicle exhausts goes on sale across Europe next month. Its manufacturers hope it will give architects and town planners a new weapon in the fight against pollution, an article in New Scientist reports.

The new product, Ecopaint, is designed to absorb nitrogen oxides, one of the causes of respiratory problems and smog production. Dr Robert McIntyre, of Millenium Chemicals who developed the paint, says a typical 0.3 millimetre layer would be enough to last five years in a heavily polluted city. Its secret lies in spherical nano-particles of titanium dioxide and calcium carbonate. These are embedded in the paints base, polysiloxane, a silicon-based polymer. The base is porous enough to allow the nitrogen oxides to diffuse through it and adhere to the titanium dioxide particles. These particles absorb ultraviolet radiation in sunlight and use this energy to convert nitrogen oxides to nitric acid. The acid is then either washed away in rain, or neutralised by the alkaline calcium carbonate particles, producing carbon dioxide, water and calcium nitrate. Previous attempts to use titanium dioxide to break down nitrogen oxides failed because it attacked the base material as aggressively as it did the pollutants. The polysiloxane is resistant to this, although the developers admit that they don't know why. Due to the nano-particles being so small, the paint is clear. Pigment can be added, however, and the first paint to go on sale will be white. Ecopaint was developed by Millennium Chemicals under a European Union funded programme - the Photcatalytic Innovative Coverings Applications for Depollution Assessment

programme (PICADA). The company says their experience with another catalytic coating shows how air quality can be improved. In 2002, 7,000 square metres of road surface were covered with catalytic cement in Milan, Italy. Residents reported that it was noticeably easier to breathe and concentrations of nitrogen oxides at street level were cut by up to 60%. EU Member States are required to monitor nitrogen oxide levels and ensure that by 2010 they have fallen below an annual average of 21 parts per billion. MORE NANO PRODUCTS Nanotechnology VOC free wall paints The implementation of Nanotechnology components into wall and facade coatings created some products which architects and building owners have been waiting for. These high-tech products make it possible, by simply replacing conventional wall paints, to achieve better energy ratings for buildings, better indoor air quality and fewer allergy-related illnesses. Nanovations Pty Ltd has teamed up with a leading paint manufacturer to bring to the Australian market multi functional coatings for buildings and constructions. Bioni CS GmbH is producing intelligent coatings which meet the highest standards of quality and add real value and benefits for professional applicators and building owners. We are now able to present functional coatings with exceptional properties and product characteristics that have not been possible before.

High tech "Made in Germany" The German manufacturer is uncompromisingly selecting the highest possible quality of raw materials while paying great attention to environmental issues. Thanks to the joint venture with of a number of leading scientific institutes, the products represent the combination of proprietary knowledge and the latest scientific discoveries, in the field of nanotechnology and coating technology.

After more than 6 years of a joint research project with the Fraunhofer Institute for Chemical Technology and the Bioni company , it was possible to create a non toxic VOC free coating system which is able not only to stop the appearance of algae and fungal growth but also destroys even antibiotic resistant bacteria found in hospitals and medical practices. The combination of active ingredients which is used in the wall paints is not a temporarily but a permanent effect and last for many years. At the same time, the new coating system has no polluting affect whatsoever on the indoor air quality and protects both human health and the environment.

Don't compromise on quality Buildings and structural facilities, particularly those regions that experience extreme climatic conditions. These includes heat and cold, UV radiation, moisture and salt spray. Bioni wall, facade and roof coatings have been developed to meet these challenges. Their temperature regulating characteristics, extremely high durability, and long service life make these products the best option available. Bioni coatings have what it takes so satisfy the highest demands for quality, efficiency and environmental sustainability. Don't compromise on health or environment

Take care on the selection of indoor paints and coatings. Once you have painted the walls you or your tenants have to live with it for a long time.

Bioni offers the lowest VOC content in the industry and still the the best possible results for

antimicrobial and antibacterial properties.

Products on the market containing Microban can't be compared with Bioni technology. Microban is a registered pesticide made by the Microban Products Company in the US. Its primary ingredient is a chemical called triclosan, which, in its liquid form, has been used as a disinfectant in hospitals for over 25 years. This is old and dangerous technology as you can see by several glass actions happening right now in the US. It is a farce that products are promoted in Australia as health benefits.

The United States Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) will not allow Microban Products Company, or any of its customers, to make claims regarding health benefits, such as protection from germs or disease prevention. Why? Because there is no specific evidence that any of the products treated with Microban are effective in preventing the spread of bacteria or disease.

Not only have experts said that the benefits of Microban are questionable, but many are also concerned that the wide-spread use of these substances may cause a major public health problem. Researchers are concerned that repeated use of products containing triclosan could be breeding resistant bacteria, or superbugs. A 1998 Tufts University study showed that over-exposure created five different triclosan-resistant strains of E. coli.

Please compare the VOC content in the paints you want to use with Bioni. We send you a complete test report done by the largest independent European test institute. Please contact us. There are plenty of environmentally friendly wall coatings on the market, but there is only one which has antibacterial and antimicrobial properties, and that's Bion

Nanotechnology anti-bacterial wall paint Nanovations is introducing the first anti-bacterial and anti-microbial wall paint where the effect is created by non-toxic nano particles with a diameter of one hundred thousandth of a millimeter. The significant breakthrough with this development is that the paint contains no biocides, solvents and coating preservatives.

No compromise on indoor air quality Since the nano-particles used in Bioni Hygienic are solid bodies, the system's efficiency retains its effect permanently. The rapid degradation of the protective function due to the evaporation of effective ingredients - as is commonly the case with biocides in conventional paints - does not take place. This property of our products, along with the absence of biocides, solvents, plasticizers, and preservation agents ensures that no indoor air pollution is caused by our low-emission Bioni coating.

Constant high anti-bacterial efficiency Germs, bacteria or fungal spores brought into contact with the surface coated with Bioni Hygienic and the integrated nano particles, for instance by the movement of air, are very quickly eliminated. The wide-ranging effects produced by the nano coating result not only in an improvement in the level of hygiene in medical and nursing facilities of all kinds, but also offer maximum protection against the formation of mould and mildew in bathrooms, toilets, washing areas and kitchens. The anti-microbial effects of Bioni Hygienic have been demonstrated in extensive studies. In addition to the direct inoculation of coating samples using inoculating loops according to Ph.Eur.2.6.1. the reduction in hospital germs such as staphylococcus aureus has also been examined. The observed reduction of 99.6% testifies the power of Bioni Hygienic.

Multi-functional surface protection In hospitals in particular, interior wall paints and coatings are subject to extremely high chemical and mechanical demands. In order to meet these demands, Bioni Hygienic has been designed to provide a high degree of resistance to both cleaning (wet abrasion resistance class 2 according to DIN EN 13300) as well as to chemicals. In addition, the coating is nonflammable (building material class A2 according to DIN 4102-1) thus providing a unique supplementary safety feature.

Nanotechnology Product Overview

Nanotechnology and special modified hybrid products can be used on buildings and constructions for a range of surfaces. The aim of such products is not to apply additional coatings but rather to replace existing products with competitive, better performing greener technology.

Concrete protection and wood coatings for interior and exterior areas are the latest development and will have a significant impact in the construction industry. Glass and metal are some of the other substrates which can be treated with products ready available.

In concrete however it is possible to integrate properties with additives. Coatings often make use of the small nature of nanotechnology to incorporate an engineering property to a material without altering its appearance. Ultra consistent product mixes and new production methods can transform the performance of even conventional raw material.

Concrete, because of its wide use is also one of our prime targets for new developments for areas like ultra chemical resistance, high temperature and waterproofing coatings.

Paints reduce heat going into the building, controlling room climate, saving air-condition costs and have permanent anti bacterial properties without containing biocides and without adding emissions to the indoor air. General advantages and benefits of available products:

Water repellent. Environmentally friendly. Significant reduction of efflorescence on concrete. Permanent protection for mass production of concrete and masonry Overall appearance will improve. Asset protection. Easy to clean/self cleaning properties. Significant reduction of moos and algae. Protects glass from staining. Weather protection and longer service intervals for maintenance No change of slip resistance ratings on concrete, stone , tiles and glass.

Chemical resistant. UV-Stable. No negative effect to adjoining surfaces. Solvent free Low VOCs, products meet future standards. Better OH&S and workplace safety. Anti bacterial paints Heat deflecting and insulating paints for external walls Temperature regulating paints for internal walls Permanent anti fungal properties. Significant improvement of indoor air quality.

The construction industry could basically have the technology for free if it is willing replace some of the traditional paints or solvent based products used for surface protections. Some of the products can be incorporated into production processes and therefore could be applied to building products during manufacturing.

Environmental Advantages

The environmental benefits are also outstanding. The use of Nanotechnology and water based hybrid products can save thousands of liters of solvents evaporating into the atmosphere.

Green building skeptics sometimes argue that it's difficult or even impossible to build green without paying a big cost premium. But real-world examples show that one can complete a green building project with no higher upfront costs, and sometimes even below standard market construction costs. Plus, any extra first costs one pay can be recovered through faster lease-up rates, rental premiums and increased market valuation.

Nanovations is offering extremely competitive solutions, without compromising on performance , durability and environmental and health and safety issues.

nanotechnology coating solutions for glass Nanovations NG 1010 is a new coating technology for glass substrates. The easy to clean effect appears from a chemical reaction of a sol gel solution. After the curing a cross linked three dimensional and only a few atoms thick nanoscale structure is created. These structure gives the glass a extremely durable hydrophobic effect. The completely invisible treatment cannot be removed by water, cleaning agent or with high pressure equipment. The extreme thin coating is a results of the lowest consumption rate on the market. Coverage rates of 400 square meter per liter (14,000 square foot per gallon) are possible. NG 1010 is the most cost effective and fastest to apply glass coating solution available

Nanovations supplies products for the first high rise building project.

NG 1010 was applied on the first high rise building in the world where such advanced technology has been used to treat the glass of the complete building. On this landmark building, right on Sydney harbour more than 5500 square meter (45,000 square foot) of glass has been fully restored and protected.

Please contact us if you have any questions. Mass bulk impregnation for masonry and concrete Nanovations Pty Ltd , introducing a impressive new product for the protection of high quality concrete, masonry, pavers and concrete roof tiles. The product has the ability to add properties to the bulk material, which makes the use of surface sealers in many cases unnecessary.

Concrete, even of high quality, contains capillaries and micro cracks. This allows water to pass through its structure. The passage of water and moisture by this method is called capillary absorption. Even dense concrete of high standard does not eliminate absorption of water through capillary and permeability. Concrete inherently absorbs moisture and soluble contaminates from its surrounding environment. For decades surface sealers and penetrating impregnations have been used to reduce the water absorption, and protect concrete from moss, algae and salt attacks.

With the use of Nanovations 3001, this costly add on can be avoided.

By becoming a permanent part of the complete concrete or masonry, rising damp and efflorescence can be prevented. Surface abrasion does not have an effect on the function ,even on high traffic areas. The product does not rely on the use of polluting solvents to penetrate deep into concrete. The water based solution will be added to the concrete mix. The impregnating properties areworking throughout the whole thickness of the concrete/masonry part.

Colored concrete without discoloration efflorescence and microbial growth.

Concrete manufactured with 3001 does not require surface sealers

3001 can be used for bulk impregnation in manufacturing lines for pavers, bricks and concrete roof tiles without any modification of the machinery. 3001 can be also used in coastal areas, pool surroundings where high levels of salt can damage the concrete or create efflorescence.

The extreme reduction of the water absorption results in fast drying surfaces where moss and algae will not find the appropriate growing ground.

3001 will reduce maintenance cost and time and water usage from cleaning while keep the appearance and the value of the asset at the highest possible level.

Please click on this thumbnail to see a high resolution images what water does when you break the bulk treated concrete (High resolution 2.5 Mb)

Concrete part 24 hours after pouring. Water droplets will not absorb.

Benefits of bulk impregnation of concrete and masonry

Manufacturer not only will avoid complains about discoloration, efflorescence or salt damages, but also got the possibility to add the 3001 as an marketing extra. Manufacturers can stand out against their competitors. The quality of the materials will improve, which leads to a greater customer satisfaction. Greater sales can be achieved, and new sales markets can be opened.

Masonry parts can be stored and transported without the issues of water stains and washout efflorescence and discoloration of colored concrete parts.

The potential for the end-user to save on ongoing maintenance is a significant marketing advantage. In bulk impregnations the material costs for pavers for example, are lower than the product costs for a standard surface sealer. Counting in the labor costs for the application will make a bulk impregnation approximate 60-70 % cheaper than the application of a sealer after the installation.

Furthermore, the use waterproofing additives , and water reducers can be reduced or completely avoided.

3001 is able to reduce the water absorption down to 1 % even if the treated stone is stored under water for 24 hours. Nevertheless is 3001 permeable for water vapor. Efflorescence test according to AS/NZS 4456.6:2003 Determining potential to efflorescence. Exposure time 9 month. Left row without 3001.

Nanotechnology for Wood

The use of nanotechnology is a real innovation in the development of wood coatings, particularly in relation to UV absorbing and penetration. Although wood is naturally durable and strong, the effects of out-door exposure can degrade not only these physical properties, but its natural beauty as well. In meeting this challenge, Nanovations has introduced a new VOC-free technology for clear impregnating wood protection. The only way to slow the UV degradation of the surface is to incorporate a pigment or a UV stabilizer into the formulation. The colorless, UV-resistant, water-repellent preservative represents the broadest category of clear natural finishes on the market.

Nanoscale UV absorbers offer unique benefits in protecting coatings and coated substrates from being degraded by UV radiation. The small size of the particles makes it possible to offer high protection without affecting the transparency of the impregnation.

The water based nature of the products is a functional and environmentally friendly solution against rot and moos and algae build-up. Water absorption is significantly reduced. Utilizing this well-developed science of nanotechnology, the product absorbs the most damaging rays of the Suns spectrum, Nanovations Lignol Wood coatings, protect wood for longer in the harsh solar radiation in Australia and around the world without the discoloring effect of these rays. Nanoscale UV absorber will protect the wood substrate from degrading UV radiation and will increase the lifetime of the coating. These products are most interesting in harsh outdoor environments. Nanoscale solutions are able to concentrate more active substance in a smaller volume of

liquid. It is possible to use less product to archive better durability and the products are VOC free and water based.

Please notice: Hardwood with low water absorption rates and with a density higher than 900 kg/m3 can be difficult to treat. Some of the hardwood in that range like Merbau, Ironwood, Jarrah, Belian for example are not absorbing finishes well , not even solvent based oils. If you select such a wood species for external use, please be aware that if you want to keep the natural look of such a hardwood, more regular maintenance will be necessary.

Nano technology based long lasting sealant for paintwork or painted plastic components. The paintwork is protected by a coating of modified fluorocarbon nano particles, which are as hard as glass. It freshens up the colours intensively, has a dirt repellent effect, and has an outstanding droplet run off effect. Depending on conditions, the product can provide protection for up to 9 months!
