Is LTE-Advanced another new Technology?

l

Experience from GSM and WCDMA confirms

l l

The first release after introduction of a new technology includes only few leftovers not finalized in the initial release. The second release after introduction of a new technology includes more significant features / improvements.

Is LTE-Advanced another new Technology?

l l l

The same holds true for LTE Significant features will be added into LTE Rel-10 in order to meet IMT-Advanced requirements In consequence LTE-Advanced is not a new technology but an evolution of LTE Rel-8.

IMT-Advanced Key Requirements

l l

The ITU has coined the term IMT-Advanced to identify mobile broadband systems whose capabilities go beyond those of IMT 2000. Requirements l Enhanced peak data rates to support advanced services and applications 100 Mbps DL for high mobility 1 Gbps DL / 500 Mbps UL for low mobility l Increased spectrum efficieny (> 30 bps/Hz) Other requirements include l Compatibility of services within IMT and with fixed networks, l Capability of interworking with other radio access systems, l High quality mobile services, l User equipment suitable for worldwide use, l User-friendly applications, services and equipment, l Worldwide roaming capability, l Etc.

3GPP Release 10 and ITU Schedule

l

3GPP and ITU standardisation schedule are aligned

3GPP LTE-Advanced (Rel-10 and beyond) meets these requirements and has been submitted as a candidate radio interface technology for IMT-Advanced.

Carrier Aggregation Basics

Wider LTE transmission bandwidth by aggregating several frequency blocks (component carriers)
l l l

Support for contiguous (inter-band) and non-contiguous (intra-band) component carriers Up to 100 MHz transmission bandwidth when aggregating 5 component carriers Each component carrier is backwards compatible with Rel-8 LTE
LTE bandwidth Aggregated bandwidth

Contiguous component carriers

Non-contiguous component carriersFrequency

Benefits
l l l

High peak data rate of 1 Gbps Backwards compatible with Rel-8 LTE Flexible spectrum usage and deployment

LTE-Advanced
l l

Carrier Aggregation - Deployment

Initial LTE-Advanced deployments will likely be limited to the use of two component carriers 3GPP have identified 4 deployment scenarios

Carrier Aggregation - Details

Primary cell / secondary cell Activation / de-activation of CCs Scheduling
l l Non-Contiguous Contiguous spectrum allocation
RLC transmission buffer Dynamic switching Channel coding HARQ Data mod. Mapping Channel coding HARQ Data mod. Mapping Channel coding HARQ Data mod. Mapping Channel coding HARQ Data mod. Mapping

Parallel transmission of multiple component carriers There is one transport block (in absence of spatial multiplexing) and one HARQ entity per scheduled component carrier (from the UE perspective), Two different approaches are discussed how to inform the UE about the scheduling for each band,
Separate PDCCH for each carrier, Common PDCCH for multiple carrier,

e.g. 20 MHz

LTE-Advanced
CoMP - Basics
l l

Coordinated multiple point transmission & reception CoMP aims to turn the inter-cell interference into a useful signal specifically at the cell border to enhance cell edge throughput
Multiple geographically separated eNBs

September 2010 | LTE-Advanced | 13

LTE-Advanced
CoMP - Basics
CoMP Transmission (Downlink) Joint Processing Coordinated Scheduling / Beamforming Dynamic cell selection Data available at serving cell only Data transmitted from one eNB but user scheduling / beamforming decisions are made with coordination among cells

Joint transmission

Data available at each transmission point Data transmitted simultaneously from multiple eNBs Data transmitted from one eNB at a time

CoMP Reception (Uplink) UE UL signal (PUSCH) is received and processed by multiple eNBs Scheduling is coordinated among cells

Enhanced MIMO Schemes

LTE-Advanced specifies
Up to MIMO 8x8 in downlink Up to MIMO 4x4 in uplink to increase spectrum efficiency and throughput

Downlink reference signal structure enhanced

l l

UE specific demodulation reference signal (DM-RS) targeting PDSCH demodulation Cell specific channel state information reference signal (CSI-RS) for CQI, PMI, RI single antenna port mode multi antenna port mode
September 2010 | LTE-Advanced | 15

New Rel-10 specific uplink transmission modes

l l

LTE-Advanced
Relaying
l l l

Relaying enhances cell coverage and capacity UE communicates with a relay eNB, which in turn communicates with a donor eNB LTE-Advanced defines 2 types of relay nodes Type 1 Type 2

Inband relay node Outband relay node

LTE-Advanced

Enhanced uplink SC-FDMA

l The uplink transmission

scheme in Rel-10 LTE-Advanced remains SC-FDMA.

l Two enhancements l Control-data decoupling (simultaneous PUSCH and PUCCH transmission) l Non-contiguous data transmission (clusters of subcarriers can be allocated)
