partment:
Mt. Laurel Police arrested a 22-
year-old man, of the 100 block of

Jail in lieu of $10,000 bail.
On July 19 at 10:15 p.m., Mt.
Laurel Police responded to a bur-
glar alarm at Dicks Sporting
Goods on Nixon Drive. On arrival
it was determined there were
subjects inside of the store. Two
juvenile males from Maple
Shade, ages 11 and 13, were even-
tually taken into custody. The in-
vestigation determined that the
boys hid in the store after closing
for the purpose of stealing mer-
chandise. The pair shot arrows
throughout the store and broke
into an ammunition cabinet. Sev-
eral store displays were also dam-
aged. Damage to the store and
merchandise is estimated at
$1,200. Both boys were charged
with burglary and criminal mis-
chief. One of the boys was also
charged with resisting arrest.

F
inally, nine months after Super-
storm Sandy touched ground,
New Jerseys economy is gain-
ing momentum.
A report released last week by Wells
Fargo, the states second largest bank
by deposits, says that federal and in-
surance money flowing into the state
to aid in the Sandy recovery started to
pay dividends in the first half of 2013,
and should continue to propel the
economy for the rest of this year.
According to the report, the state
added 4,200 construction jobs from
January to June of this year. The
same time last year, the industry lost
4,500 jobs.
Its a great sign for the state. Gov.
Christie estimated New Jersey suf-
fered $37 billion in damage from the
storm. Approximately 22,000 homes
were left uninhabitable and 325,000
others were significantly damaged.
Now, in the dead of the summer,
with the start of hurricane season ap-
proaching again, construction is heat-
ing up, fueling the states overall eco-
nomic recovery.
The Wells Fargo report wasnt all
peachy, though. While New Jerseys
economy was significantly better in
the first half of this year compared to
last, it still lags behind national aver-
ages. Six percent of all mortgages are
in foreclosure, the second-highest rate
in the country behind only Florida.
Housing prices grew only 2.9 percent
year over year, while the national aver-
age stood at 12.2 percent. New Jerseys
unemployment rate dropped almost a
point in the last year, and that trend is
expected to continue, but it still sits at
8.7 percent compared to the national
average of 7.6 percent.
These stats beg the questions:
Should we compare New Jersey to the
rest of the country? Or should we just
compare the Garden State to itself ?
New Jersey is a very unique state in
that its economy is fueled strongly by
two major metropolitan regions whose
city is in another state. The economy
works differently here. Employment
works differently here. Elections work
differently here. So why, then, if we
are an outlier, must we compare our-
selves to others?
For once, we need to focus on our
own recovery, and ensure we are
adding as many jobs as we can, no
matter what our stats look like com-
pared to every other state.
Recovery finally catching a break
Considerable momentum gained in first half of 2013, report says
Your thoughts
Should we rejoice in the positive outlook
for New Jerseys economy? Or should
we be worried that we lag behind the
rest of the country? Let your voice be
heard through a letter to the editor.

Paws Farm, the nature and environ-
mental center located on Hainesport Road,
will be receiving some much-needed ten-
der love and care as the council awarded
funds to a renovation project. Upgrades to
the heating and air conditioning systems
have become necessary due to the age of
the farm. The resolution will be funded by
a federal Energy Efficiency Grant and was
approved unanimously by the council.
The township will continue to con-
tract with a service so that residents can
pay their taxes online through a web por-
tal for a convenience fee.
This year, it added a direct withdrawal
option where the township will debit resi-
dents accounts quarterly for the amount
due without a service fee. In addition to
online payments, an external drop box is
located to the right of the entry doors on
the municipal building, which provides 24-
hour access. Tax bills were expected to be
mailed to residents this week.
The townships ordinance regarding
solar panels passed unanimously after a
second reading and without comment
from the public.
The ordinance bans the use of ground
mounted solar energy systems in residen-
tial areas.
The move was a proactive measure,
according to township manger Maureen
Mitchell, who said she was unaware of
any residents who already had these sys-
tems in place.

12 THE MT. LAUREL SUN JULY 31 - AUGUST 6, 2013
If you've been wearing
dentures for a long time,
you know what the den-
ture look means. Not
everyone who wears den-
tures is old, but when den-
tures get old, they make you
look that way. Thin lips,
deep creases at the corners
of the mouth, a more
prominent chin these are
all signs of the denture
look.
Facelift Dentures is a
new technique. Mt. Holly
Family Dentistry is one of a
very few dental offices in
the US trained in this
process. It utilizes the prin-
ciples of neuromuscular
dentistry that we have, for
many years, used to help pa-
tients who suffer from
headaches and TMJ prob-
lems. We start with relaxed
facial muscles to determine
the most comfortable bite
position and the optimum
facial aesthetics. We build
the denture from that as a
starting point and with
those goals in mind.
Mt. Holly Family Den-
tistry has a lot of experi-
ence creating new smiles
for our patients. Dental
makeovers have been a cor-
nerstone of our practice for
many years. Now we can ex-
tend that service to denture
patients. We frequently get
notes and letters from
spouses and children of our
patients telling us what a
difference the new dentures
have made. Its an exciting
and gratifying process for
doctor and patient. For
more information, contact
us at 609-267-3230 or on line

BOE releases results
of self-assessment
By NICK COHEN
The Mt. Laurel Sun
The Mt. Laurel Board of Edu-
cation released the results of the
districts self-assessment for de-
termining grades under the Anti-
Bullying Bill of Rights Act.
Out of a maximum 75 points,
Mt. Laurels schools scored 65, or
approximately 87 percent. The
score is an average of all reported
incidents of HIB (harassment, in-
timidation, bullying) in the dis-
tricts eight schools.
We are happy that we scored
that highly, and a thank you goes
to our amazing counselors and
teaching staff who work with our
children every day, superintend-
ent Antoinette Rath said. That
being said, no incident of bully-
ing will be tolerated. Our goal is
to score 75, so we do have room to
grow.
The eight core elements of The
Anti-Bullying Bill of Rights Act
outline a number of different tac-
tics for schools to enact to stop
bullying. Staff training, parent
outreach, student awareness and
HIB programs are just some of
the policies schools must have in
place.
With this information, and
with more training in the future,
we will be able to continue to im-
prove our schools and the experi-
ence our children have, Rath
said.
The assessment period began
on Jan. 5, 2011, and ended on June
30 of this year. The results of the
self-assessment are now submit-
ted to the state Department of Ed-
ucation for feedback. Once re-
viewed, the score will be made of-
ficial later this year and posted on
the districts website so residents
have access to the information.
In other news:
The Mt. Laurel Public Educa-
tion Fund, Inc. will host its annu-
al golf tournament on Sept. 16 at
Laurel Creek Country Club. The
days activities will begin at 11
a.m. with check-in and lunch. Af-
ternoon golfing begins at noon
with a shotgun start and scram-
ble format rules, which will en-
able each foursome to proceed at
a pace commensurate with their
particular skill levels. Following
the afternoon of golf, there will
be cocktails, entertainment, din-
ner and an awards presentation.
The fund is an independent
non-profit corporation formed in
1994 to benefit the schools in the
district. A board of trustees com-
prised of volunteers from across
the community governs the fund.
The group's largest fund-raising
effort is the annual golf tourna-
ment held each fall.
Since its inception, the fund
has donated more than $700,000 to
the districts eight elementary
schools. Proceeds of this years
activities will be dedicated to the
continuation of after-school clubs
and related activities deleted
from the districts budget due to
funding cuts, scholarships to stu-
dents in need of tutoring and
grants for teachers to support in-
novative programs.

tration forms, visit www.mtlau-
relschools.org.

Girl Scouts collect
books for Project
Read to Me
Christine Adams and McKen-
na Samson of Girl Scout Cadet
troop No. 22429 in Mt. Laurel, col-
lected nearly 1,100 books for their
Girl Scout Silver Award Project
entitled Project Read to Me. The
book drive took place to benefit
the BookMates organization, a lit-
eracy program in South Jersey.
The books were distributed to
the Veterans Memorial Family
School in Camden and some
books were donated to the Mt.
Laurel Library.
The project took months of
planning and involved coordina-
tion as well as communication
with local schools and communi-
ty organizations. Some of the
steps of the project included dis-
tributing flyers, setting up collec-
tion sites, pickup and sorting of
books and delivery of the books
to the receiving school. The girls
carefully recorded the hours
spent on the project and were in
communication with many
school and township personnel.
The books were delivered to
the Veterans Memorial Family
School on June 3, during a Har-
rington Middle School visit to the
school.
This is the most beautiful
book Ive ever seen! a student ex-
claimed as she hugged her brand
new book. The two girls distrib-
uted the books in the school gym
to the eager students.
The project was a learning ex-
perience for the girls and a great
community service opportunity.
