SPRING CONCERT Sunday May 19 at the Klein GBYO-KEYS Debut!

Aspirational is the only word to describe this years Spring Concert. The bill will feature, as always, all five GBYO Ensembles (String Orchestra, Wind Ensemble, Concert Orchestra, Symphony Orchestra and Principal Orchestra). In addition, this concert will also debut the new GBYO-KEYS Ensemble, a non-audition group made up of string players from the Bridgeport School System (see also GBYOAN volume 2, number 1). The program has been a great success, not only retaining students, but in bringing forward new talent for our regular ensembles. Several GBYO-KEYS students have already transitioned into our String Orchestra program!

The Spring Concert is also the commencement ceremony for our next group of alumni, this years high school seniors. Always a great moment, our seniors graduate before Principal Orchestras performance; their intended colleges and musical honors will be listed in the concert program. This years seniors are headed to Bard College, Berklee College of Music, Boston College, Boston University, Brown, CalTech, Dickinson, Duke, Gettysburg, University of Hartford/Hartt School, Harvard, University of Maine, Quinnipiac, Swarthmore, Tufts, UConn, Vanderbilt, University of Virginia and others quite an accomplished group! The Spring Concert will take place Sunday afternoon, May 19 at 3 PM, at the beautiful Klein Memorial Auditorium, 910 Fairfield Avenue in Bridgeport. Christopher Hisey, GBYO Music Director, will conduct the Principal Orchestra in Intermezzo from Hary Janos (Kodaly), Peer Gynt Suite (Grieg), Hoe Down from Rodeo (Copeland), and Japanese Maple by Composition Competition winner and former GBYO violinist, Alyssa Rodriguez. The Symphony Orchestra, under the baton of Carrie Mascaro, will perform Light Cavalry Overture (von Suppe), Prelude No. 1 from La Traviata (Verdi), and the fourth movement of Shostakovichs Symphony No. 5 (arr. Stephen Bulla). Erica Messina in a dual role will conduct both the Concert Orchestra and the GBYO-KEYS ensemble. Concert will play the finale from Mozarts Symphony No. 41 "Jupiter" (arr. Carrie Lane Gruselle), the Grand March from Tannhuser (Richard Wagner, arr. Vernon F. Leidig), and the Israeli traditional Hatikvah The Hope Traditional (arr. Elliot Del Borgo). GBYO-KEYS, in its debut, will honor educator and longtime GBYO conductor Dorothy Straub , performing her Simple Square Dance, as well as The Russian Music Box by Soon Hee Newbold, and Simple Gifts (arr. John Higgins). Alumni are cordially invited to attend. Tickets are $15/$10 for seniors, available in advance by check (see address below) or at the door. Come see the GBYO of today!
