Sport SpotIight: Endurance
Riding and the Tevis Cup
Endurance riding is an
equestrian sport based on controlled
long-distance races. t is one of the
international competitions recognized
by the FE. There are endurance
rides worldwide. n the USA, the
American Endurance Ride
Conference (AERC) sanctions
endurance rides.
Any breed can compete, but the
Arabian generally dominates the top
levels because of the breed's
stamina and natural endurance
abilities.
The Tevis Cup, a grueling
100-mile ride, which may take riders
up to 24 (straight) hours to complete,
took place last weekend in California.
Rusty Toth and Take A Break
("Quake), an 8-year-old Arabian
gelding, finished first, having come
from behind in the last five miles to
overtake the leaders. Of 160 starters
in the race, only 47% finished on
account of the weekend's hot
weather. Suzanne Hedgecock and
Julio were awarded the Haggin Cup
for best conditioned horse. Check
out the full results here.
For more info check out AERC.

Training ChaIIenge:
DeveIoping BaIance
Relaxation and balance are the
first two skills riders must develop.
There are a number of exercises
that riders can use to help
themselves develop the "muscle
memory they need to stay in
balance with their horses. These
include:
Frog position. Riders
draw their knees up to help
them find the middle of the
saddle and to stay there
without gripping with their
calves.
Dog position. Riders lift
their thighs away from the
saddle (like a dog lifting its
leg) to help them find the
center of the saddle without
gripping with their thighs.
Up two, down one.
nstead of normal up-down
posting to the horse's
two-beat trot, riders stay up
for two beats, sit for one
beat, and keep repeating
this pattern. This constantly
changes the diagonal that
the riders are on and
prevents them from using
the rhythmic thrust of either
hind leg as a crutch to
maintain their balance.
Riding without stirrups.
Riders can work on this
alone but they will achieve
faster results if an instructor
or knowledgeable riding
partner puts their horse on a
longe line so they can work
without either stirrups or
reins. Start at the walk (in
both directions) and
gradually work up to the trot
and canter as balance
improves.
Off-the-horse exercises,
such as squats, can be
extremely helpful in
developing balance also.
do not recommend riding with
bareback pads to develop balance
because they encourage gripping
with the calves and tilting forward
with the upper body. A good
saddle helps the rider sit correctly.
Balance is something that even
top level riders constantly work on.
Don't be discouraged and just
keep riding!

1. The trot is a two-beat diagonaI
gait.
2. Forging occurs when the hind
foot strikes the front foot.
3. A short dressage arena has
eight Ietters around the edge: A,
K, E, H, C, M, B, and F. It's easy to
remember them. Just say "AII
King Edward's horses can make
big fences." And X is center.
4. HippoIogy is the correct term
for the 'study of horses.'
PATTERN of the MONTH
Trail Class
1. Work Gate.
2. Walk to and over ground poles.
3. Walk over bridge.
4. Trot into chute.
5. Sidepass Left.
6. Back through chute.
7. Walk to Mailbox.
8. Open and Close Mailbox.
9. Exit.
*Think SMOOTH. The pattern should
flow between obstacles. Stop and count
to three before beginning each difficult
obstacle so that you and your horse
remain CALM. *Beginner riders can
simply walk through the chute,
remembering to make smooth corners.
