Geographical Location Calapan, the capital town of Oriental Mindoro, is located in the northern coast of Mindoro Island forty-five

kilometers south of Manila. The town lies at the head of Clapan Bay between Balite and Calapan Points, two and one half miles wide eastward to Silonay Bay and then to Na-iba and Lagarian Points, seven and 11 miles respectively southward of Calapan Point. Calapan River crossess the town halfway and drifts towards the sea. Calapan is second class municipality in terms of income classification. It is an agricultural community with about 70% of its land area of 21,730 hectares planted to major crops. Built-up area is about 563 hectares with 237 hectares in the 13 poblacion or urban barangays and adjacent areas and 326 hectares scattered in the rural barangays. Calpan has 62 barangays with Camilmil, Ilaya and Sto. Nino as the three largest Barangays with combined population of 10,049. TOPOGRAPHY AND WATER SYSTEM A coastal plain with an elevation of two to five meters above sea level, Calapan is approximately one and one-half kilometers wide and five one-half kilometers long. It is surrounded with verdant hills and its highest peak is about 187 kilometers. The town overlooks Mt. Halcon, the countrys third highest peak. Calapan lies on a vast flat plain extending to the foot of the mountain ranges which are the rivers, creek and streams. Its water consists of the Calapan

Bay, Silonay Bay, and the rivers of Clapan, Bucayao and Panggalan. The town has an extensive area of ground water suitable for agricultural, industrial and domestic use. The free flowing area storage is estimated to have a hydrostatic head of 110 meters with an area of 72 square kilometers and storability value of 48 million cubic meter. SOIL AND GEOLOGY Soil types found in abundance are the San Miguel silty and sandy loam, San Manuel loam, Calumpang silty clay loam, Calumpang clay loam, Bulaeon and Buguey clay loam and hydrosoil. There are enermous quantities of sand and gravel along the riverbanks of Bucayao, amogius and Puting Tubig and beach sand along the shorelines of Balite, Lazareto, and Suqui. An estimated 50000 tons of guano deposits are found inside the caves of Lazareto, Suqui and the islets which are adequate to support the fertilizer requirements of the town. SOCIAL CHARACTERISTICS Calapan has an estimated population of 85,898 in 1990 and estimated total of 15,616 households. Its age composition indicates that it has a smaller (under age 15) population of 37,795 or 44% and bigger working (15-65) population of 95,526 or 53%. With the present growth rate of 2.63% the population is expected to reach 113,594 by the year 2002. The population density is 401 persons per square kilometer.

About 3674 farmers in the rice production industry earned an annual income of 10000 pesos each which is considered below the poverty line. A total of 1,925 registered business establishments have employment of 9,625 workers while the municipal government employs 237 workers. INDUSTRIAL CHARACTERISTICS Agriculture Calapan has always been an agricultural town and the center of business of the province. It is the ditribution base of agricultural of the southern and northern municipalities of Oriental Mnidoro since the part is located in Calapan. An area of 12,660 hectares or 70% of its land is devoted mainly to agriculture and of which 6,631 hectare are irrigated and 1,148 hectares are refined having a total of 7,779 hectares planted to paly/riceland. Other agricultural lands with an area of more or less 4,481 hectares are planted to coconuts, fruits, trees, (source Mun. Agri-Industrial Development plan). The harvests yield of paly per hectares, per harvest is 83 cavans or Php 16,400.00 gross incomes. Two hravests a year are possible in irrigated areas which are supported by free flowing surface water and pumps. In 1993, there are surplus of 42,197 metric tons of paly based on the total annual production of 64,800 metric ton or 1,296,000 cavans vis-a-vis the annual palay consumption requirement of 452,061 cavans or 22,603 metric tons. A surplus of 104,207 metric tons in meat production is also reported

while there are deficits of 50,131 metric tons in vegetables production and 2,944 metric tons in root crops production. Fishery The long expansive coastlines of Calapan are natural fishing grounds and are found to be very suitable for shallow fishing. The coastal water are well stocked with large quantities of fish species such as tanguigui, tambakol, tulingan, manansi, dilis, galunggong and lumahan. Calapan lake and the other rivers can be developed for inland fishing and fresh water culture for fish species such as banak, sabalo, hito, dalag, tilapia, and gurami about 503 hectares of fishponds can produce tons of bangus, tilapia and BLACK TINGER PRAWN or SUGPO. Bangus fries and black tinger prawn fries are caught in large qualities and command a higher price in Malabon and Navotas markets. The brackish water in swamp areas 800 hectares has tremendous potential for aquaculture development.

Climate The climate in Oriental Mindoro is generally mil dthroughtout the year with no distinct dry and wet seasons, quite favorable to visitors who would like to fully enjoy the provinces tourist spots. Mindoro Highlights Oriental Mindoro evokes images of tropical paradise, white sands, clear blue waters, pink corals, roaring waterfalls, lush green forest covering majestic mountains. Unique tamaraws found only in Mindoro, various flora and fauna found on the slopes Mount Halcon and the Mangyans add to the culture and color of Oriental Mindoro. Puerto Galera is famous for its beaches. One can go swimming, snorkeling, scuba-diving, sunbathing, water-skiing, boating or just about anything on its white sand beaches. Puerto Galera Tamaraw Falls, touted as the largest waterfall in Oriental Mindoro, towers 132 meters above sea level with a natural swimming pool at its base. For shoppers, Puerto Galera offers finely-crafted items made of buri/buntal, marble or gold. Oriental Mindoro consists of 14 munic qualities namely: (First District) Puerto Galera, San Teodoro, Baco, Naujan, Victoria, Socorro and Pola, (Second District) Pinamalayan, Gloria, Bansud, Bongabong, Roxas, Mansalay, and Bulalacao and one city, Calapan.

Naujan has the 10,000 hectares Naujan Lake, the largest freshwater lake in the province. It also has white sands, mineral hot springs and freeflowing water. Pinamalayan, Socorro and Victoria offer to the visitors various fresh and succulent fruits, vegetable, fish and delicacies from its rich farms and fish ponds. Flourishing rapidly in this municipality is a hand-embroidery business. Aside from being the seat of the provincial government, Calapan offers beaches plus commercial and industrial opportunities, Bulalacao, an exotic place has Buyayao island. It is hte Haven of Hanunuo, one of the six Mangyan tribes. Buri and buntal products abound in this municipality. San Teodoro possesses a spring field swimming pool and natural falls. Marble and gold are found in San Teodoro and Baco. Reforestation projects are presently being conducted in this municipality. A paradise island , Oriental Mindoro abounds with pristine lakes, rivers and beaches; unspoiled mountains and hills; soothing hot springs and awsome falls. Its rich and fertile soil gives birth to a harvest of crops like rice, coconut, corn, abaca and other fruits and vegetables, resulting in the province being hailed as the rice granary and fruit basket of Southern Tagalog
