Slurry Seal and Microsurfacing Pavement Rejuvenation

FAA and AI Airport Pavement Preservation Workshop By Eric M. Reimschiissel American Pavement Preservation Las Vegas, Nevada

Item FAA P-626 asphalt slurry seal ISSA A105 Item FAA P-635 polymer modified asphalt micro-surfacing ISSA A-143. Item FAA P-632 Asphalt Rejuvenation

Runway closures & Notams (notice to airmen) F.O.D. Foreign object debris Access to critical areas Scheduling is critical for airport operations Escorts for construction equipment Work closely with airport authorities to cover any possible security concerns

Crack sealing (cracks wider than ) Herbicide treatment & Vegetation removal Removal of pavement markings Removal of tire rubber surface contaminant Sweeping and cleaning of the surface Tack coat ( if required)

Normally a tack coat is not required unless the surface to be covered is extremely dry or raveled. If required, the spray applied tack coat should consist of one part emulsion and three parts water. Application rate according to the FAA specifications and engineer approval. The pavement condition will dictate the amount of fog seal material required.

P-626 Slurry Seal is a mixture of emulsified asphalt (latex modified) mineral aggregate and water properly proportioned, mixed, and spread on a asphalt prepared underlying course or existing wearing surface. Slurry seal is a cold mix thin surface overlay application applied on an asphalt surface for the purpose pavement preservation, sealing or surface corrections. Slurry seal provides a new surface application

Slurry seals extend the life of an existing surface Slurry seals last from 5 to 10 years Slurry seals preserve the pavement surface Slurry seal can correct some surface imperfections such as raveling and loss of surface fines or fill minor cracking Slurry seal provides a new surface application Slurry seals are a cost effective application

The aggregate shall consist of sound and durable manufactured sand, slag, crusher fines, crushed stone, or combination thereof. The aggregate shall be clean and free from vegetable matter, dirt, and other deleterious substances. In addition to this the aggregate shall be 100% crushed. Aggregate shall have a uniform gradation. Type 1 slurry seal is a 1/8 minus aggregate Type 2 slurry seal is a inch minus aggregate

Type 1 gradation is used for maximum crack penetration and is usually used in low density traffic areas where the primary objective is sealing. Type 2 gradation is used to seal and improve skid resistance. Type 2 slurry seal can correct some irregular surface conditions Slurry Seal places a new thin overlaid surface

Slurry seal un-modified anionic or cationic Slurry Seal can be Latex Modified emulsion. Latex modified emulsions are better for long term applications and aggregate retention Emulsion to be tested prior to use.

Micro-surfacing

Similar to Slurry Seal but typically thicker Asphalt Binders are always polymer modified Used when a faster setting thicker surface applications is required. Mixes are stiff, and can withstand loads without deformation Can be used in multiple lifts for leveling. Microsurfacing is usually a thicker application than slurry seal. Microsurfacing places a new thin overlaid surface

Construct longitudinal and transverse joints to be neat appearing and uniform without buildup, uncovered areas, or unsightly appearance. All joints shall have no more than inch (6mm) difference in the elevation when measured across with a 10 straight edge.

The roller, if required, shall be a selfpropelled pneumatic-tired roller capable of exerting a contact pressure during rolling of 50 pounds per square inch (350,000 Newtons per square meter). It shall be equipped with a water spray system, to be used if the slurry is picking up on the tires during rolling.

Item FAA P-632 Pavement Rejuvenation The purpose of the application of these products is the rejuvenation of the upper 3/8 of an inch of an oxidized or otherwise aged asphalt surface binder without causing an unacceptable reduction in the friction characteristics of the pavement section

Emulsions are sprayed on the asphalt surface with calibrated distributor truck Spray applications must be uniform Applications rates must be set according to the specifications and monitored for quality. Emulsions to be tested prior to use or certificate of compliance accepted Test sections might be required

Adequate heating capacity Positive displacement pump Full circulation spray bar that maintains proper nozzles which provide the specified rate of application of the product. Positive shut off Calibrated to the required application chart

Severe Cracking

Minor to Moderate Cracks

New pavement markings applied to slurry seal and rejuvenation applications provide a new and beautiful looking pavement surface

Pavement preservation applications are necessary for the long term care of asphalt Pavement preservation is cost effective Slurry seal and Microsurfacing applications are both preventive maintenance and corrective applications providing a new surface condition Rejuvenation applications can enhance and extend the life of a pavement surface as well as provide some crack mitigation
