Charlie Chaplin was born as Charles Spencer Chaplin in London on 16 April 1889. Before he became a star, Chaplin acted on the stage in London. He went to the USA with a travelling show and was discovered by the film producer, Mack Sennett. In 1914 he began to direct his own films. During his time in Hollywood, Chaplin acted in many films. He developcd a much-loved character who worc baggy trousers, a small coat, large shoes and a black bowlcr hat. His most suecessful films included The l'ramp (1915), The Gold Rush (1925), City Lights (1931) and Modern Times (1936). Chaplin became very rich and eventually he became famous all over the world.
