NOTES FROM OUR SEMINARIAN MARK MURPHY

From July 22 to July 29, Pope Francis is in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, for the 28th World Youth Day, an event where youth and young adults from around the world gather together to give thanks to God and strengthen each other in the Faith. In the early part of his trip, two comments from the Pope have resonated with me. 1) While the focus on World Youth Day is obviously on young people, when speaking with reporters on the plane from Italy to Brazil, Pope Francis spoke of the dignity of the elderly. The young are the future because they are strong, the 76-year-old Pope said, but the aged are essential too, because they have wisdom of life. Sometimes we are unjust to the aged; we set them aside as if they have nothing to give, but they have the wisdom of life, history of our homelands and families that we need. In my short time in the Archangels Catholic Cluster, I have been blessed to meet several more mature parishioners who are truly giants. They continue to serve the community through the invaluable ministry of prayer and through leadership. I have found their wisdom from their lived experience an invaluable treasure. Thank you to those of you who have spent time with and spoken to me. 2) On his first day in Brazil, Pope Francis spoke to Brazils president about the world-wide nature of the Catholic Faith and its world-wide mission which is entrusted to the youth: These young people are from every continent, they speak many languages, they bring with them different cultures, and yet they also find in Christ the answer to their highest aspirationChrist has confidence in young people and entrusts them with the very future of his mission, Go and make disciples. Go beyond the confines of what is humanly possible and create a world of brothers and sisters! And young people have confidence in Christ: they are not afraid to risk for him the only life they have, because they know they will not be disappointed. Christ says to all of us Follow Me. For some, He asks us to follow Him by living a religious vocation in the Church. I have been far from disappointed in my life as I prepare to live a religious vocation. In fact, Christ has given me a great joy with this life. Is Christ asking you to Go and make disciples, to risk your life for Him, and live a joy-filled life of a religious vocation?
