Featured Pic: should flow from our own spirituality and not just scraping by on
what we can plan for the next week. I’d like to think that I try and
think about what you guys need to hear, and then combine it with
what I have been learning in my own personal faith.
I’ll be completely honest with you. I have been humbled by my
experience here. I haven’t done a good job of making this Christian-
ity practical, tactile, and real enough for you guys. I hope that as I
come home (and you can keep me accountable to this) that we will
truly flesh out what it means to be Christ... (Gal 3:27) in our schools,
homes, church, and whereever we are.
This means that we must live consistent lives. The class on Amos
(after Joel and before Obediah) that I had was just about this very
thing. Read Amos 5:21-24. In it God says that he despises their wor-
ship in Isreal! Why? Because they weren’t living the life they should
have been living. They were just going through the motions.
I don’t want us to just go through the motions. I want us to re-

stand and experience the joy and peace God has to offer us. Amen?

Genesis 6:5-22 – 9:17

Family Discussion:
How did God feel about how wicked the people on earth had become?
(vs. 6:6)
What did God decide to do about man’s wickedness? (vs. 6:7)
How did God feel about Noah? (vs. 6:8-9)
What did God tell Noah to build? (vs. 6:14)
What did God tell Noah to put on the ark with him and his family? (6:19-
20)
Did God give Noah specific instructions on how to build the ark? (vs. 6:15-
16)
Did Noah follow God’s specific instructions? (vs. 6:22, 7:5)
How long did it rain? (7:12)
How long did the waters flood the earth? (vs. 7:24)
When Noah finally came out of the, ark what did he do? (vs. 8:20)
What is the sign of the covenant that God made with Noah that He would
never again destroy all living creatures this way? (9:13)

Challenge:
God gave instructions to Noah on how to specifically build the ark. Has
God given us any instructions? (Psalm119:105) Should we follow God’s
instructions specifically, or can we change them a little? (Rev. 22:19) What
happens if we do not follow God’s will? (Luke 13:3,5) What can we do as a
family to help each other follow the will of God?

with the world’s vision of love.
Yes, we all desire love in our lives, but we strive to get it from the
wrong source most of the time. We try and get it from others, or even
ourselves. Unfortunately, we only manage a broken type of love between
each other most of the time. If you want to understand True Love... you
have to look at God and what he has done for you.
“This is how God showed his love among us: He sent his one and only

True love is sacrifice. True love is giving before even expecting any-

to offer. I am speaking of course of the Kingdom of God.
Current Forum Topic: I was studying Ephesians for our class and made note of this small passage...
“Folding@Home” “...remember that at that time you were separate from Christ, excluded from
citizenship in Israel and foreigners to the covenants of the promise, without hope

Paul was speaking to the Gentiles and their past position of being unwel-

become proselytes, but they still weren’t welcomed into God’s temple. They still
lacked the full priviledges of Citizenship.
I saw recently some questions to the test of becoming a US citizen... and
there is no way I would be able to pass that test (sorry). Do you know how many
changes or amendments there are to the Constitution? Or how many represen-

Do you know what it takes to become a citizen in God’s kingdom? Rather

Jesus wasn’t satisfied with a soft heart, warm wishes, and then leav-
ing them with a few empty words. He actually did something for them,
because he sincerely loved the people. The same love we should have for
one another. A truly deep love that requires sacrifice.
I saw on TV once a couple of actors playing out a situation with a hid-
den camera documenting the reactions of the people around them. The
actors would cause a scene in a park area with lots of people, and one of
the actors would act as if they were in peril. Many times the people would
walk by quickly, maybe stealing a quick glance over the shoulder. Some
would be right there on a park bench, and try to ignore what was going
on. Only a few people would actually stop to try and help.
How come we can be so content to put our blinders on and see only

think God thought about their attitude?
What did King Saul want David to take into battle? Why didn’t David take
it?
What did he use to protect himself instead? Why do you think David
took five stones?
David was from the tribe of Benjamin, which was known for having
excellent slinging skills. What previous experiences did David have that
caused him to believe that God would protect him? How did his past
experiences end up as a benefit to his whole nation?
What happened to the Philistines after David killed Goliath?
Do you think David might have been scared even though he was
courageous?
Who was really responsible for the outcome of this battle?

Challenge:
How do you feel when you see or hear others mocking or making fun of
God?
List some ways that you might be courageous when it comes to stand-
ing up for God in your day-to-day life. Make a commitment to study
God’s word faithfully while you are young so you will have the skills to
stand firmly against the enemies of God. Ask God to help you to remem-
ber to trust in Him when circumstances look difficult so that you can be
courageous like David even when others are not.

Feasting on the Word:
Daniel 6:1-28

Family Discussion:
Who was king at this time? (Dan. 5: 31)
What did King Darius plan to put Daniel in charge of? (vs. 3)
How did this make the other administrators feel? (vs. 4)
Could they find anything to charge Daniel with? (vs. 4)
What decree did the administrators come up with? (vs. 6-9)
Did he stop praying after the decree was given? (vs. 10)
How often did Daniel pray to God? (vs. 10)
What did the administrators do when they found Daniel praying? (vs. 12)
How did this make the king feel? (vs. 14)

Featured Pic: This carries on this concept of honoring our father and mother. In
some countries (such as Mexico, China, etc.), family is more important
than the individual. In China, when naming someone, the family name
goes first, and the “first” name goes after it. What you do whether bad or
good, as part of your family would either disgrace them or honor them. In
these same countries, the elderly are highly respected and recognized for
their wisdom.
Our country has an entirely different culture though, we honor and
reach for youthfulness. Pepsi’s slogan for a time was “Be Young, Drink
Pepsi”, so a bunch of old people drank Pepsi (at least in the commercials).
Plastic surgery is an attempt to make old people look younger. A majority
of marketing companies target young people in their ads. All this atten-
tion on youth has neglected and rejected the wisdom of the ages. Maybe
it’s just me, but I don’t think this is necessarily a good thing.
Maybe, we’re missing out on something when we are continuously re-
jected the old and replacing it with the new. It may be the case with elec-
tronics that newer is almost always better, but I don’t think that means we
should treat people the same way.
Finally, skipping back to (I know, it’s one concept with lots of prin-

The above is a instance of Paul and Barnabas fasting before making
a major decision in the churches. I recall that we fasted once here in this
church for a 24 hour period.
Fasting is a time of giving up something in reverence to God. As in all
things, God should be the main reason for anything we do. If it becomes
“look at me and my high spirituality” , then we have lost the point. As
Christ has said...
“When you fast, do not look somber as the hypocrites do, for they
disfigure their faces to show men they are fasting. I tell you the truth, they
have received their reward in full.” -Matt. 6:16
It isn’t commanded, and it isn’t for a reward or any kind of bargaining
tool to use against God. It isn’t for health reasons either (just because you
need to lose a few pounds). If it isn’t used as a way to commune and focus
on God, then it is something misrepresented.
Christ many times tried to explain his concept of fasting like this...

what about our conversations with God? How much of our time with God
is spent talking to God, versus listening for God’s answer to prayers in
the quiet solo times. Many might reply to that last statement with “God

“Have you ever stopped to listen to Him?”
This week really challenge yourselves to study out more about what
the Bible says about idle words and how the fool behaves. Also really
think and reflect about each word you say, write, type, text to someone.
How much of what you’ve said in your life was necessary? How much of it

a shortcoming or justifying your actions with an onlooker. How much of
what you said this week was for the glory of God?
It’s in that last question that may reveal what we’re truly seeking
instead of the Kingdom of God. What is it you seek to praise about to
others? Is it yourself, a videogame, or even a good book? Then ask your-
selves how many missed opportunities have we had to share the gospel
of Christ.

If you turn to the cited scripture, you’ll see this quote is embedding in
the Jesus’ teaching about the difference between sheep and goats (not
actual animals, just spiritually speaking). This verse, kind of scares me.
Escpecially, in light of the fact that I’m not currently doing much for the

I’ve been reading this book called “Irresistible Revolution” by Shane
Claiborne. He essentially shares a section of his life as he’s trying to live
his life accordingly to how Christ has called him out to “carry the cross”. He
befriends and helps the homeless of Philadelphia, goes out to India and
lives among a leper colony and cares for their wounds... and the experi-

I’ve been praying a lot about this, and I hope that you will also consid-
er ways that we can really glorify God by serving our community. How will
the gospel be heard if we are not preaching it with our lives? Let us not be
content with being comfortable where we are, but strive continually to-
wards the goal of becoming more and more like Christ. This means, denial
of self, submission to others in service to those who so desperately need
to experience the grace of God. Have you ever thought about your bless-

part in the build! Email me attitude that certainly takes time to develop. The willingness to do the
with your ideas (or Facebook small acts of service that may go unnoticed is a good definition of what it
message me, etc)! means to be a servant.
Here I will mention another one of my shortcomings... I like to be
acknowledged for the things that I do (this is not fishing for compliments,
it’s actually a request for the opposite [but not criticism either!]). Jesus en-
courages us though to take on another type of attitude in our service for
others though. There’s this idea that we should do things in secret. To not
announce to the world everytime we do some good to others. This goes
against everything our fleshly bodies desire. We all desire to be recog-
nized for the good we do in the world, right?
The works of service God has prepared for us to do may not be to feed
the starving world, but maybe to consistently help others in the small
ways everyday. You may receive thanks for your works of service, but then
again it may go unnoticed.
I can think of one way that people here at church serve every week
and I’m sure they receive no thanks for the service that they do. Just
about every week we have a potluck meal for our groups and visitors.
That means every week there are some who prepare tastey meals. Every
week there are those who in small ways help others by serving drinks.
Every week there are those that stay behind to help clean up, and take
out the trash. Every week there are people doing small acts of service and
these people probably never think twice to do it. That is because they
have developed a servant’s heart.
There are other things that we can do everyday that God gives us the
opportunity to do. This week is VBS Work Week. We have lots of things to
cut out and prepare for the teachers and creating decorations for the fol-
lowing week. Think about things around the house that can be done and
would be a great service to your family. Think about things that can be
done in your neighborhood. Think about things that you can do for your
friends (and as Christ would have us do... even for our enemies). Love one
another!

message me, etc)! When it comes to God’s will for us as His children, I’ve had a few
revelations about that from the fatherly perspective... and as much as my
finite mind can concieve, I believe it’s pretty close to God’s mindset. Many
of you probably are starting to think about major life decisions. Some may
hesitate making a decisions to do one thing or another in life, because
you wonder what God’s will is for your life.
Josiah is still quite young, and probably hasn’t thought about what ac-
tivities he’ll want to participate in when he is older. I think about how he’ll
grow up and what interests he’ll have. Will he get into soccer? Football?
Baseball? Will he become a bit of a geek like me? Truly, it doesn’t matter
to me what he does. As long as he uses his talents, gifts and abilities to
do what he would enjoy doing. I will gladly watch him catch a baseball
as much as I would proudly hear him play the cello. As long as he uses his
talents and gets joy from what he does.
I think God shares that same vision for us. Do whatever brings you
joy, and either use the natural talents you have or develop new ones you
desire. I know the following parable of the talents refers to money, but
considering what God has invested in us (His Holy Spirit, 2 Cor. 5:5), I think
it still applies in this case. It’s just convenient that He called the currency
talents.
“To one he gave five talents of money, to another two talents, and to
another one talent, each according to his ability.” -Matt. 25:15
“For everyone who has will be given more, and he will have an abun-
dance. Whoever does not have, even what he has will be taken from him.”
-Matt. 25:29
You’ve heard the expression, if you don’t use it you’ll lose it? Sounds
like the same rule applies here.
Although there is an exception to this rule. If you are using your gifts
in disobedience... than that would fall outside of God’s will. So use what
God has given you to glorify Him, and He will bless you with even more!

then I will start working on today that really got me thinking.
the website once again. “If you abide in me, and my words abide in you, ask for whatever you

part in the build! Email me The word for abide in my greek dictionary is defined as “to stay, re-
with your ideas (or Facebook main, live, dwell, abide; to be in a state that begins and continues, yet may
message me, etc)! or may not end or stop. “To abide in Christ” is to follow his example of a
life obedient to the will of God”.
Jesus is saying quite a bit in this verse. He’s giving us a promise that he
will give us anything we ask for in prayer. That’s a big promise! But there’s
also a big condition on that statement as well. “If we dwell in Him.” You
don’t live in a hotel because you’re only there a few days. The same is true
in our life. If we’re not obeying Christ everyday of the week, we are not
living in Him”
To quote a few lines from the aforementioned book...
“How many prayers bring no answer? The cause must be either that
we do not fulfill the condition, or God does not fulfill the promise.” (pg.
153). He goes on to say that since we’re not comfortable with either of
those answers we slap the “if it’s God’s Will” onto our prayers as an excuse
without digging deeper into the problem. Since God is always faithful to
His promises, the only other conclusion is we are not fulfilling the condi-
tion. We’re not really dwelling in Christ if we aren’t willing to give him ALL
of our life.
If this makes you uncomfortable... know that it makes me uncomfort-
able too. It means that sometimes our prayers resemble more of what
James is combating against when he says...
“You ask and do not receive, because you ask wrongly, in order to
spend what you get on your pleasures.” -James 4:3
Let us all strive to live in Christ more on a daily basis, rather than only
when it’s convenient, or when it’s time for Church. Maybe we should use
our prayers as a gauge whether we’re actually dwelling in Christ. If our
prayers are answered, that would be a positive indication that we are
indeed living in Christ. If it seems that our prayers go unheard, maybe it’s
time to evaluate ourselves and the life we live. Why is it whenever some-
thing isn’t going right, we always look to blame someone or something
else? Let us align our will with God’s.

Diaz, the construction manager of the site, was very appreciative of
our groups help. He said, “You guys were the best group I’ve ever had. You
were hard workers and got a lot done!” Turning to another Habitat for
Humanity administrator, he said, “If this group comes again, I want them
to work with me.” That last comment showed the sincerity of his first com-
ment. This is really a big compliment to you, your hard work and example.
This was an opportunity to show an example of Christ to the com-
munity. There were some there, forced to be there to serve community
service hours, whether for school or for a court sentence. Your willingness
to volunteer, and even the way you conducted the work with joy, spoke
volumes about who we are as Christians.
“...If anyone serves, he should do it with the strength God provides, so
that in all things God may be praised through Jesus Christ. To him be the
glory and the power for ever and ever. Amen.” -1 Peter 4:11

to help them build two more homes in just twelve days! These days will
be on 6 consecutive weekends (Friday and Saturday). I hope you might
consider doing this again. We could even volunteer our time before the
summer ends.
After washing the disciples feet, Jesus said in John 13:15-17,
“I have set you an example that you should do as I have done for
you. I tell you the truth, no servant is greater than his master, nor is
a messenger greater than the one who sent him. Now that you know
these things, you will be blessed if you do them.”

with your ideas (or Facebook Maybe we all need to spend some time reflecting on our worship and
message me, etc)! focusing more on it. But first we must realize that worship does not just
happen on Sunday Morning, Evening and Wednesday Night. That’s some-
thing called bracketing, where the opening prayer is the “start of worship”
and the closing prayer is the “end of worship”. Worship of God doesn’t end
there though. It extends into our whole life, if we let it. Sometimes we try
to compartmentalize God... where we go to him two times a week. But
God seeks to live and dwell in us daily, and not just for 15 minutes in the
morning but the whole day!
“Therefore, I urge you, brothers, in view of God’s mercy, to offer your
bodies as living sacrifices, holy and pleasing to God — this is your spiritual
act of worship.” -Rom. 12:1
The above verse says living sacrifices. Sometimes we have a hard time
walking into Sunday morning class without looking like Zombies. Some-
times this is just from not getting enough sleep the night before. How are
we expected to be prepared for worshipping God at this time if our brain
isn’t even engaged. Get some sleep the night before, treat Saturday night
as if it was a school night.
Speaking of minds, sometimes our minds are thinking about so many
things during worship that worship never really happens. We’re thinking
about what we’ll have for lunch, how we’ll spend the afternoon, or how
that person over there is singing way off key. Try to focus on the words of
songs and think about what you’re singing to God.
We may spend a long time getting ready, and thinking about what
we’re going to wear to church. How much time do spend preparing your
heart and mind for worship?
I can sometimes be guilty of all this, too. That’s how I know what to
write! But I think change is necessary. How reverent are we to God? Have
we forgotten who we’re worshipping? If we can’t even bring our minds to
worship God on a Sunday morning, how can we worship him throughout
the week?

On The Website Image of Christ

Been thinking a lot about In the Beggining when God had created Adam and Eve (read man-
how to organize the kind), he created them in His own image. The same hold true today as the
website. If you have any body of Christ is representing Christ to the world. Our life is supposed to
input, please email me, be a witness to others.
sparquay@gmail.com.
If someone were to watch your everyday actions throughout the
Featured Picture week... what kind of person would they see? Would they see a Christian
whose beliefs actually make a difference in the way you live your life? Or
would they see that your faith really doesn’t make any difference in the
way that you live.

It’s especially hurtful, if we’re condemning the world of sin, and yet we
are continuing in the very sins that we’ve condemned.

I’m currently reading a book called “Unchristian”. It describes the

opinions of 16-29 year olds who are outside of the church and what they
really think about Christianity. In it 85% would describe Christians as be-
ing hypocritical. Only 15% would say that the lifestyles of Christians was
different from the norm. That says a lot about how they percieve us. You
might write this of as an unfair judgement, but the truth is, there’s a rea-
son they believe this way.

To get an idea of how “different” Christians are compared to the world.

Kyle is genuinely shocked! He

ston.
Do your friends know that you are a Christian? If not, could they tell
that you were a Christian by the way you conduct your life at school, or
work? Would they be surprised to find out that you actually were a Chris-
tian?

Unfortunately, this perspective of Christians has had an effect on how

effective we can be at reaching non-Christians. Why should they become
a Christian if they see no difference in our lives? Make a difference.

one who endures temptation? (James 1:12) What is endurance and how
does patience help one to endure?
“The pursuits of man” can cause us to be tempted to focus on ourselves

discuss James 1:9-10.

On The Website School

Been thinking a lot about Seems like the recent conversations I’ve been having with people
how to organize the has been about School and the classes they are taking and since school
website. If you have any officially starts for Muscogee Co. (sorry, for not knowing what days they
input, please email me, start in Harris Co. and Alabama) tomorrow... I thought I would theme my
sparquay@gmail.com. article with the occasion.
I don’t know about you guys, but when I was going to school... I re-
greted leaving the Summer Break behind and longed for the next break
to come quickly. Maybe I didn’t have the correct attitude about the whole
thing. I didn’t look at it from the perspective that maybe God would have
liked me to have.
School is an opportunity to learn stuff. That stuff might even be a
testimony to the stuff of God. (Insert Truth for the word stuff ). I remem-
ber taking physics and having a athiestic teacher (he still is), but learning
all these really cool equations that allowed you to actually predict the
path, velocity, forces, etc... of obects. And in each of these equations was
a constant. You had to have that constant to figure out the force of grav-
ity between two masses, or to find at what rate a cat accelerated from a
certain height, how long it took to hit the ground and at what speed it hit
the ground (my physics teacher like to use “Fluffy the Cat” in all his test
questions and examples. It definitely kept things interesting.) To me that
constant was a truth put in place by God. Inspite of my athiestic teacher,
I found an evidence of God in that class. If that constant wasn’t there...
what would the world look like? Would anything exist even if there wasn’t
gravitational pull, magnetic forces, and the mysterious “Strong Force” that
holds an Atom’s Nucleus together, the basic building block of all matter?
Paul was also known to use examples from things he didn’t learn from
a Synagogue or a Rabbi. He used greek texts to preach the gospel to the
Cretes, Mars Hill, Lystra, Athens, etc. When he preach to the Gentiles he
was using truths found in the very texts of their own literature (Acts 17:28,
for one example)!
What truths can we learn in school, even from athiestic teachers, that
testify to the truth of the living God. Remember John said “In the begin-
ning was the WORD.” In greek that was Logos, also where we get the word
Logic. If “through him all things were made” doesn’t that mean that every
truth in this world is a testimony of God pointing to himself.
God is everywhere, not just in the church building or at a youth func-
tion. He’s even at your school. Share that with your friends!

existence as he spoke it). I just have the faith that He caused it, and is
continuing to cause it (there’s still quite a few undiscovered forces that are
still unexplained... I like to attribute them to God).
Just as we will never know how the world came to be (at least, not
until we get into heaven), we also can’t predict when the world will end.
There’s the belief from some people that once this largest machine in the
world fires up and collides a few protons together, it will cause a micro-
blackhole that will eventually eat up the earth and everything around it.
No body really knows what will happen once they fire it up though. Noth-
ing might happen.
There’s also the belief that the world will end December 21, 2012 as is
according to some Mayan calendar, and astrological beliefs. I’m not sure
how they figured that one out, but I’m sure like many of the previous pre-
dicted dates about the end of the world... they will come and go. It won’t
be until God has deemed it time to end.
Only God knows when the world will end. It is something that God
keeps to himself.
“Remember, therefore, what you have received and heard; obey it, and
repent. But if you do not wake up, I will come like a thief, and you will not
know at what time I will come to you.” -Rev. 3:3

Family Discussion:
To whom does James direct this section of Scripture? (vs. 1) Why does he
tell them to weep and howl? What does James say about their riches, in
verses 2 and 3?
What had these rich oppressors done wrong? (vs. 4) What does it mean
that “the cries of the reaper have reached the ears of the Lord”?
These rich oppressors lived in luxury while the people who worked for
them were not paid, and were mistreated. What does verse 5 say this is
like? Explain.
Verse 6 tells of more sins of the oppressors. What are they?
You may be thinking, “This doesn’t apply to me. I am not a rich person
with unpaid workers.” So why do you think the Lord included this warn-
ing in the book of James? How can this principal apply to each of us?
The main idea of this section of Scripture is “be fair to others.” It is not a
sin to be rich, but what is the danger of it? Consider this: Most people in
povertystricken, third world countries think of EVERY American as rich.
Compared to people who have very little food or clothes, or no home to
live in...are you rich? What can you conclude?
Read Matthew 19:16-30 to find out what Jesus told a rich man to do.
Discuss these proverbs: Proverbs 22:2 & 16; Proverbs 28:6

How can each person in the family use their own money to honor God?

Come meet us at Stevie perseverance.
B’s on Airport Thruway for
a meal together before Feasting on the Word:
Wednesday Night Class. James 5:7-12

Family Discussion:
• What is the first thing James tells us to be patient for? (vs. 7) What word
picture does James use to illustrate this? According to verse 8, how does
that apply to us? Discuss what it means that “the coming of the Lord is at
hand.”
• What does it mean to “grumble” against one another? (vs. 9) Why
should we NOT do this? Who is “the Judge” who is standing at the door?
If we are patient with each other, it will keep us from grumbling!
• Verse 10 speaks of prophets who were patient in suffering. For one
example, read the story of Daniel and the lions’ den in Daniel 6:1-23.
• Verse 11 says the prophets were counted as blessed because of their
endurance. Verse 11 also names another person who endured patiently
during suffering. Who was it? Tell the story or read from the book named
after him, chapters 1, 2, and 42.
• So, James is telling us to be patient about the Lord’s coming, be patient
with each other, and be patient during suffering. How can you train
yourself to be patient in each of those circumstances?
• Verse 12 is an important commandment to us. Read and discuss its
meaning. •What is the warning at the end of verse 12?

Challenge:
We are to be patient for the Lord’s coming. Have you thought about the
fact that TODAY may be the day? Do you keep that in mind every day?
Since we don’t know when it will happen, what should we be doing to
get ready? Do you need to make changes in your life?

to the teaching you received from us. For you yourselves know how you

nor did we eat anyone’s food without paying for it. On the contrary, we
worked night and day, laboring and toiling so that we would not be a

We hear that some among you are idle. They are not busy; they are

Duncan can’t stand to watch! definitely not what either of the groups wanted to hear. In one state-
ment he manage to squelch any ideas of personal ownership.
The main thing here is... everything we “own” is God’s. It brings a
whole new idea into what stewardship looks like. Hopefully it changes
the way you think about “your” stuff. I’m not just talking about taking
care of the things you own, but how can you use what God has given
you to glorify him? What has God blessed you with so that you can bless
others.
Barack Obama may have called the Republicans selfish for not want-
ing to “share the wealth”, but on a personal level (not a government) we
should have the spirit to give to anyone who has need. Especially if they
are among us as Christian brothers and sisters.
“All the believers were together and had everything in common. Sell-
ing their possessions and goods, they gave to anyone as he had need.”
-Acts 2:44-45
“All the believers were one in heart and mind. No one claimed that
any of his possessions was his own, but they shared everything they
had...There were no needy persons among them. For from time to time
those who owned lands or houses sold them, brought the money from
the sales and put it at the apostles’ feet, and it was distributed to anyone
as he had need.” -Acts 4:32,34-35
If we were to live with an attitude that everything in our possession
was to be shared with everyone. Would we have the same capitalistic
attitude? Would we be so concerned with what new product we wanted
to buy that would end up in storage within the year? How would that
change our attitude about stuff? Let us really evaluate how we should
really “Love one another” (John 13:34).

On The Website Worship

I was thinking a lot about worship this week. I can recall many times
Featured Pic
when someone has said “I just didn’t get anything out of worship today.”
or “I didn’t like there worship there.” There’s several variations to these
two simple sentences, but both share a common thread. Those who say
things like this failed to understand what is worship.
The very concept of worship is to recognize a greater being. If we
are concerned whether or not we “get” anything out of worship after a
Sunday Morning or any other time... then we’ve really failed to recog-
nize that Worship is directed to God, not ourselves. Granted some of
our songs are directed to each other as encouragement or a persuation
to follow Christ. But a majority of our songs should be directed to God,
singing His praises.

“Clap your hands, all you nations; shout to God with cries of joy. How
awesome is the LORD Most High, the great King over all the earth! He
subdued nations under us, peoples under our feet. He chose our inheri-
tance for us, the pride of Jacob, whom he loved. Selah God has ascended
Aw... brother and sister! amid shouts of joy, the LORD amid the sounding of trumpets. Sing prais-
es to God, sing praises; sing praises to our King, sing praises. For God is
the King of all the earth; sing to him a psalm of praise. God reigns over
the nations; God is seated on his holy throne. The nobles of the nations
assemble as the people of the God of Abraham, for the kings of the earth
belong to God; he is greatly exalted.” -Psa. 47:1-9

The next time we sing a song that’s particularly not your favorite,
or the singing doesn’t seem to be up to “par”... think about the reasons
you worship. Are you worshiping to please yourself? Are you worship-
ing for that good feeling you get after services? If you are worshiping for
any other reason except to praise God... you are doing it for the wrong
reasons.
Worship is a difficult thing to do when our minds are not in it, or
even just singing the song without thinking of the words. Those words
that we all too often sing with empty conviction. Take the time to evalu-
ate your thoughts while you are worshiping him. Are you giving him
thanks or grumbling about how things are not going your way? God is
certainly worthy of our praise, and to truly love him with our heart, soul,
mind and body.

We first learn about Satan in the Garden of Eden. He presented himself
in the form of a serpent. He lied to Eve and deceived her. Read the ac-

should we do when Satan tempts us? (James 4:7)
Satan even tempted Jesus! Read about it in Matthew 4:1-11. If Satan is so
bold as to tempt the Son of God, don’t you think he will surely tempt us,
too?
How does Peter describe Satan in 1 Peter 5:8-9? What does Peter say to
do when Satan attacks?
Paul tells us to put on Christian “armor” to protect ourselves from the
devil’s schemes. Read Ephesians 6:10-18 and discuss each piece of armor
and what it means.
What will be the devil’s punishment, as we read in Revelation 20:10 and
Revelation 12:9? What will happen to people who choose to follow the
devil?

doesn’t mind me borrowing from him (see front of Church newsletter).
To paraphrase liberally what Dan Wood said (yes, I’m borrowing from
him too), It would put us to shame if we just took the time to look at the
blessings God has already given us.
Isn’t it ironic how Christmas is only a month away from Thanksgiv-
ing? We spend a day being thankful for the things we have and then the
very next day, for a whole month, we begun to wish for things we don’t
have and convince ourselves we won’t be happy until we have a certain
cell phone, a particular music player, or a specified game console. What
happened to being thankful?
And since when has Christmas become the Holiday of Getting?
Instead of taking the time to give to those in need, we conspire how we
can persuade our parents and grandparents to get us exactly what we
have been seduced by expensive marketing to necessitate.
“In these troubled times” (as we’ve been frequently told), maybe we
should stand back and look at the blessings we already have been given
and look to how we can bless others. Let’s not just say how thankful we
are, but take some action to show your thankfulness to God and... aim to
do it every single day of the year, without the Turkey dinner.

John 17:1-5, Mark 14:32-40, Matthew 27:26-31, Mark 15:21-37
Revelation 17:14

Family Discussion:
Jesus came to earth on a mission. What was it? Read Jesus’ prayer to God
when it was almost time for Jesus to die on the cross. (John 17:1-5)
In the Garden of Gethsemane, the night before Jesus died, he struggled
with the dread of the cross and separation from God. He felt the weight
of the sins of all people for all time. Think of the how much Jesus must
love us as you read about that night in Mark 14:32-40.
After Jesus’ trial, before Pilate, what did Pilate order to be done to Jesus,
in Matthew 27:26? Discuss what it means to be “flogged” or “scourged.”
Look it up in a dictionary, if possible. What other pain and injustice was
inflicted on Jesus by the soldiers in verses 27-31. Did Jesus deserve this
kind of treatment?
What is crucifixion? Make pictures in your mind as you read about Jesus’
death on the cross in Mark 15:21-37. Pretend you were there to watch.
Then discuss: Jesus was sentenced to death like a criminal, yet he never
sinned.
He took our sins on himself, and took our punishment. Jesus paid a very
high price to choose us!
Jesus overcame the power of death, sin, and Satan. And who else will be
victorious, invited to live in the presence of Jesus forever? His chosen,
faithful followers! (Read Revelation 17:14.) You see, he chose you!

Challenge:
This week, you choose someone....to share the gospel with, to invite to
church, to pray for, to do a kind deed for, to encourage with a hug or a
card. Who will you choose?

Reading Guide
Take the time to read and pray. Allow God to reveal Himself to you through His word. It will bless your life!

and cherish, because they were so close in that moment.
I don’t enjoy it when Josiah cries or screams, but I love it when he
reaches out to me seeking comfort. It’s almost a bitter sweet experience.
“The righteous cry out, and the LORD hears them; he delivers them
from all their troubles. The LORD is close to the brokenhearted and saves
those who are crushed in spirit. A righteous man may have many trou-
bles, but the LORD delivers him from them all; he protects all his bones,
not one of them will be broken.” -Psalms 34:17-20
Even though, we would prefer to never go through struggles and
storms, God allows it to happen to us. Because it is in these times we
seek God and are reminded of our dependence on him. It keeps us close
to Him and he will protect us. Through this we grow spiritually stronger,
even though we may seem weak to the world.
I love that we can call God, “Father”... even “Daddy”. He has adopted
us as his children and loves us as his own. He has not abandoned us, but
when we accept him and realize our need for Him... he comes running
like the Father in the Prodigal Son (Luke 15:11f ). He just waits for us to
reach out to Him.
Why is it we sometimes get angry with God, or seek all these other
sources for temporary relief before we even run to God? God cares to
comfort you in all your lifes storms whether they’re seemingly big or
miniscule, trivial or tyranical. Seek Him first, delight in his presence, and
cling to Him like a child to its Father.

Dec 13- Christmas Party! Why Choose Christ?
Get ready for our annual Week # 4
Christmas Party!
OBJECTIVE: To discuss the reasons why we need Christ as our Savior.

Feasting on the Word: Romans 5:6-10

Family Discussion:
What three conditions does Paul tell us we are in when we are in sin?
(Powerless – verse 6, ungodly – verse 6, enemies – verse 10)
Sin is a very serious thing. What is sin? (I John 3:4)
Who has sinned? (Romans 3:23)
What does sin do to us? (Romans 6:23, Isaiah 59:2)
Who is the answer to our sin? (Matthew 1:21, Luke 19:10, John 14:6)
Going back to Romans 5:6-10...
Paul told us there are three conditions we are in when we are sinners. He
also tells us three things that come through Jesus Christ. What are those
three things? (Justified – verse 9, saved from His wrath – verse 9, recon-
ciled – verse 10)
In verse 9, Paul tells us we can be justified. What does justified mean?
(Brought back in a relationship with God - just as if you had never
sinned.)
Through what are we justified? (The blood of Jesus Christ)
So, how important is it for us to choose Christ?

Challenge:
Take time to discuss how much God must love us to send Jesus to die for
us so that we could have the hope of eternal life with Him. Share some
things that you will do this week to show God you love Him. If you have
younger children, sing Jesus Loves Me or Jesus Loves the Little Children.

in an email! We’ve mistakenly put other things before loving one another. We show
favoritism to those who look most like us and write off the very ones of
society that Christ would have been seen among.

“Speak and act as those who are going to be judged by the law that
gives freedom, because judgment without mercy will be shown to any-
one who has not been merciful. Mercy triumphs over judgment!” -James
2:12-13

The law that gives freedom is the law that Christ gave us when he
fulfilled the old law on the cross. Instead of a new law with new bind-
ings, it’s a law with 2 simple principles: Love God, and Love your neigh-
bor. When we add things that cause others to stumble and make the
way to God more difficult, we become much more like the Pharisees
that Jesus often warned his disciples about.

“Therefore let us stop passing judgment on one another. Instead,

make up your mind not to put any stumbling block or obstacle in your
brother’s way.” -Rom. 14:13

How would Jesus interact with those you encounter everyday?

How would he show them the mercy that they needed? I pray that God
shows you an opportunity to show that mercy this week to someone.

Looking back at Romans 5:9, through what can we be justified? (Christ’s
blood) How do we come in contact with the blood of Christ so that we
can wash away our sins?
1st we must HEAR
- Romans 10:17 – Faith comes through hearing the word of God.
- John 6:45 – It is God’s Word, not man’s, that we need to listen to.
2nd we must BELIEVE (Have faith)
- John 8:24 – If we do not believe, we die in our sins.
- Hebrews 11:6 – Belief is required to please God.
3rd we must REPENT (Repentance means to turn and go a different di-
rection. We must turn from the ways of sin and move toward God.)
- Acts 3:19 – Repentance is needed, so the Lord can wipe out our sins.
- Acts 17:30 – God commands that all people repent.
- Luke 13:3,5 – Repentance is essential for all men.
4th we must CONFESS
- Romans 10:9-10 – We need to confess with our mouth that “Jesus is
Lord.”
5th we must be BAPTIZED
- Acts 2:38 – The results are (1) forgiveness of sins and (2) the gift of the
Holy Spirit.
- Mark 16:16 – Baptism in faith is a response to the Gospel.
- Romans 6:3-7 – Baptism is when we come in contact with the blood of
Christ.
- Acts 10:48 – We must be baptized in the name of Jesus Christ.

by thanking God for the gracious gift of Jesus Christ and the recipe for

Why? Because they want to be beautiful, loved, accepted, etc.
We forget who we are, and we try to define ourselves by the world’s
definition of success: beauty, fame, fortune, and power. We will never
be fulfilled in pursuing these things though. You may spend your whole
life so that the world might tell you that you’re worthy. Even if it’s on a
smaller scale: your friends, your family, or your church.
If you realized who you are in God’s eyes... it would change every-
thing. What you held important is no longer important, and how you
interact with people changes. All your decisions are no longer based on
who you’re trying to be, but who you are.
