Vol. 1 No. 41 January 6, 2008
Family Discussion:
How did God feel about how wicked the people on earth had become?
(vs. 6:6)
What did God decide to do about man’s wickedness? (vs. 6:7)
How did God feel about Noah? (vs. 6:8-9)
What did God tell Noah to build? (vs. 6:14)
What did God tell Noah to put on the ark with him and his family? (6:19-
20)
Did God give Noah specific instructions on how to build the ark? (vs. 6:15-
16)
Did Noah follow God’s specific instructions? (vs. 6:22, 7:5)
How long did it rain? (7:12)
How long did the waters flood the earth? (vs. 7:24)
When Noah finally came out of the, ark what did he do? (vs. 8:20)
What is the sign of the covenant that God made with Noah that He would
never again destroy all living creatures this way? (9:13)
Challenge:
God gave instructions to Noah on how to specifically build the ark. Has
God given us any instructions? (Psalm119:105) Should we follow God’s
instructions specifically, or can we change them a little? (Rev. 22:19) What
happens if we do not follow God’s will? (Luke 13:3,5) What can we do as a
family to help each other follow the will of God?

Featured Pic: This carries on this concept of honoring our father and mother. In
some countries (such as Mexico, China, etc.), family is more important
than the individual. In China, when naming someone, the family name
goes first, and the “first” name goes after it. What you do whether bad or
good, as part of your family would either disgrace them or honor them. In
these same countries, the elderly are highly respected and recognized for
their wisdom.
Our country has an entirely different culture though, we honor and
reach for youthfulness. Pepsi’s slogan for a time was “Be Young, Drink
Pepsi”, so a bunch of old people drank Pepsi (at least in the commercials).
Plastic surgery is an attempt to make old people look younger. A majority
of marketing companies target young people in their ads. All this atten-
tion on youth has neglected and rejected the wisdom of the ages. Maybe
it’s just me, but I don’t think this is necessarily a good thing.
Maybe, we’re missing out on something when we are continuously re-
jected the old and replacing it with the new. It may be the case with elec-
tronics that newer is almost always better, but I don’t think that means we
should treat people the same way.
Finally, skipping back to (I know, it’s one concept with lots of prin-
ciples to it) honoring our father and mother and how the way we act

“can’t live without”?

what about our conversations with God? How much of our time with God
is spent talking to God, versus listening for God’s answer to prayers in
the quiet solo times. Many might reply to that last statement with “God
doesn’t speak to us today though.” Here I may volley back the question,
“Have you ever stopped to listen to Him?”
This week really challenge yourselves to study out more about what
the Bible says about idle words and how the fool behaves. Also really
think and reflect about each word you say, write, type, text to someone.
How much of what you’ve said in your life was necessary? How much of it
was a self-justification of some form? Whether it was giving an excuse for
a shortcoming or justifying your actions with an onlooker. How much of
what you said this week was for the glory of God?
It’s in that last question that may reveal what we’re truly seeking
instead of the Kingdom of God. What is it you seek to praise about to
others? Is it yourself, a videogame, or even a good book? Then ask your-
selves how many missed opportunities have we had to share the gospel
of Christ.

Paul says
“Therefore we are always confident and know that as long as we are
at home in the body we are away from the Lord. We live by faith, not by
sight. We are confident, I say, and would prefer to be away from the body
and at home with the Lord. So we make it our goal to please him, whether
we are at home in the body or away from it.” -2Cor. 5:6-9
I hope that you will pray to God to reveal what those answers truly are,
and not just the answers you think describe you. It’s amazing how we can
decieve ourselves into thinking we don’t have a problem, but many of us
have forgotten where our true home lies at times. Pray that God will show
you have to live a life determined on living for the Kingdom.

I know that I took up a lot of room for the verse and definitions, but I
thought about this verse and there’s a lot to it! Paul writes it better than I
could ever explain it.
I included the definitions of a few keywords (and really there’s more
keywords in there, but I choose two.) and made some phrases bold.
So, I would encourage you to really read the above passage, and focus
on each phrase and meditate on it’s meaning (not the kind of meditating
that is done in eastern religions where you clear your mind of everything;
but the kind where you focus your mind on something profound Phil. 4:8-
9). Take it in with small bites. This is steak, and you don’t swallow steak
whole! You enjoy every little bite and chew it slowly. I encourage you to
do the same with this passage this week. Really dig into it.
The more I read the Bible, the more I discover a deeper understanding
of verses. This comes more from my own personal study than anything
I’ve learned in a class, conference, or sermon. I encourage you to do the
same.

• What is the first thing James tells us to be patient for? (vs. 7) What word
picture does James use to illustrate this? According to verse 8, how does
that apply to us? Discuss what it means that “the coming of the Lord is at
hand.”
• What does it mean to “grumble” against one another? (vs. 9) Why
should we NOT do this? Who is “the Judge” who is standing at the door?
If we are patient with each other, it will keep us from grumbling!
• Verse 10 speaks of prophets who were patient in suffering. For one
example, read the story of Daniel and the lions’ den in Daniel 6:1-23.
• Verse 11 says the prophets were counted as blessed because of their
endurance. Verse 11 also names another person who endured patiently
during suffering. Who was it? Tell the story or read from the book named
after him, chapters 1, 2, and 42.
• So, James is telling us to be patient about the Lord’s coming, be patient
with each other, and be patient during suffering. How can you train
yourself to be patient in each of those circumstances?
• Verse 12 is an important commandment to us. Read and discuss its
meaning. •What is the warning at the end of verse 12?
Challenge:
We are to be patient for the Lord’s coming. Have you thought about the
fact that TODAY may be the day? Do you keep that in mind every day?
Since we don’t know when it will happen, what should we be doing to
get ready? Do you need to make changes in your life?

Family Discussion:
As you study this lesson, develop a list of words that describe God.
Begin with The Creation, reading Genesis 1:1-28.
What word describes God in 1 John 1:5? Psalms 31:5 says that He is the
God of what?
Read Psalms 89:5-8. What do you learn about God in this passage? Dis-
cuss how each member of your family “pictures” God.
When the children of Israel entered the Promised Land, the practice of
idol worship was all around them. What did Joshua say about choosing
God, in Joshua 24:14-15?
In Psalm 37:3-6, the Psalmist gives very good advice about choosing
God. Why is it so important to choose to live God’s way?
Challenge:
Name as many Bible stories as you can think of in which a person or
group of people chose to follow God and were blessed for making that
decision.

Aw... brother and sister! amid shouts of joy, the LORD amid the sounding of trumpets. Sing prais-
es to God, sing praises; sing praises to our King, sing praises. For God is
the King of all the earth; sing to him a psalm of praise. God reigns over
the nations; God is seated on his holy throne. The nobles of the nations
assemble as the people of the God of Abraham, for the kings of the earth
belong to God; he is greatly exalted.” -Psa. 47:1-9
The next time we sing a song that’s particularly not your favorite,
or the singing doesn’t seem to be up to “par”... think about the reasons
you worship. Are you worshiping to please yourself? Are you worship-
ing for that good feeling you get after services? If you are worshiping for
any other reason except to praise God... you are doing it for the wrong
reasons.
Worship is a difficult thing to do when our minds are not in it, or
even just singing the song without thinking of the words. Those words
that we all too often sing with empty conviction. Take the time to evalu-
ate your thoughts while you are worshiping him. Are you giving him
thanks or grumbling about how things are not going your way? God is
certainly worthy of our praise, and to truly love him with our heart, soul,
mind and body.

Challenge:
Everything concerning God is described as good, and to live eternally in
Heaven with God will be wonderful. Everything written about Satan is
bad, and to live eternally in hell with him will be the most horrible thing
that could happen. Why, then, do some people choose to follow Satan
instead of God? How can you keep that from happening to you?

Family Discussion:
Jesus came to earth on a mission. What was it? Read Jesus’ prayer to God
when it was almost time for Jesus to die on the cross. (John 17:1-5)
In the Garden of Gethsemane, the night before Jesus died, he struggled
with the dread of the cross and separation from God. He felt the weight
of the sins of all people for all time. Think of the how much Jesus must
love us as you read about that night in Mark 14:32-40.
After Jesus’ trial, before Pilate, what did Pilate order to be done to Jesus,
in Matthew 27:26? Discuss what it means to be “flogged” or “scourged.”
Look it up in a dictionary, if possible. What other pain and injustice was
inflicted on Jesus by the soldiers in verses 27-31. Did Jesus deserve this
kind of treatment?
What is crucifixion? Make pictures in your mind as you read about Jesus’
death on the cross in Mark 15:21-37. Pretend you were there to watch.
Then discuss: Jesus was sentenced to death like a criminal, yet he never
sinned.
He took our sins on himself, and took our punishment. Jesus paid a very
high price to choose us!
Jesus overcame the power of death, sin, and Satan. And who else will be
victorious, invited to live in the presence of Jesus forever? His chosen,
faithful followers! (Read Revelation 17:14.) You see, he chose you!
Challenge:
This week, you choose someone....to share the gospel with, to invite to
church, to pray for, to do a kind deed for, to encourage with a hug or a
card. Who will you choose?

Family Discussion:
What three conditions does Paul tell us we are in when we are in sin?
(Powerless – verse 6, ungodly – verse 6, enemies – verse 10)
Sin is a very serious thing. What is sin? (I John 3:4)
Who has sinned? (Romans 3:23)
What does sin do to us? (Romans 6:23, Isaiah 59:2)
Who is the answer to our sin? (Matthew 1:21, Luke 19:10, John 14:6)
Going back to Romans 5:6-10...
Paul told us there are three conditions we are in when we are sinners. He
also tells us three things that come through Jesus Christ. What are those
three things? (Justified – verse 9, saved from His wrath – verse 9, recon-
ciled – verse 10)
In verse 9, Paul tells us we can be justified. What does justified mean?
(Brought back in a relationship with God - just as if you had never
sinned.)
Through what are we justified? (The blood of Jesus Christ)
So, how important is it for us to choose Christ?
Challenge:
Take time to discuss how much God must love us to send Jesus to die for
us so that we could have the hope of eternal life with Him. Share some
things that you will do this week to show God you love Him. If you have
younger children, sing Jesus Loves Me or Jesus Loves the Little Children.

“Speak and act as those who are going to be judged by the law that
gives freedom, because judgment without mercy will be shown to any-
one who has not been merciful. Mercy triumphs over judgment!” -James
2:12-13
The law that gives freedom is the law that Christ gave us when he
fulfilled the old law on the cross. Instead of a new law with new bind-
ings, it’s a law with 2 simple principles: Love God, and Love your neigh-
bor. When we add things that cause others to stumble and make the
way to God more difficult, we become much more like the Pharisees
that Jesus often warned his disciples about.
Note from Aaron: I also think true discipleship to Christ must follow
these “steps”.
