Title Summary

A3048S Environmental-Friendly Approach in Making Noise Sounds Better In this project, we look into a novel way on how we can use a psychoacoustic signal processing approach to make annoying environmental noise sounds more peaceful and less annoying. Students will have an opportunity to test the effectiveness of using different sound to mask out environmental noise and come up with a study on how these maskers impact the listening preference in different environment. This is a software project and students must have a strong interest in audio recording and processing sound tracks for subjective testing. A/P Chong Yong Kim (Loc:S1-B1c-97, Ext: 4535)

TRSP method is very effective in scattering, multipath or complex environment. TRSP is applied to many fields such as acoustic, imaging, electromagnetic, communication etc. The eigenvalue and corresponding eigenvector structure of the Time Reversal Operator (TRO) provides information about the scattering scenario (environment) under study. By performing eigenvalue decomposition (EVD) of the TRO and using the time reversal array (TRA) to transmit signals produced by particular eigenvectors, selective focusing of point-like scatterers becomes possible. In the project, the theory and simulation for selective focusing sound will be developed to match the state of the art in industry. Besides, it is potential and interesting project for students that want to do research or study postgraduate in the future. A/P Chong Yong Kim (Loc:S1-B1c-97, Ext: 4535)

Thus, the allowable compression is bounded by the tolerable degradation of the specific application. This project involves the development of a motion JPEG based surveillance system with one of

the most popular digital signal processor from Texas Instruments. An alternative coding scheme that employs a subband coding approach will be utilized in this project, while permitting higher image compression with lesser perceptible distortions. In addition, many interesting new features that are previously not found in the JPEG standard will be investigated and integrated into this project. Student can look forward in gaining valuable experience in embedded system development. Supervisor A/P Chong Yong Kim (Loc:S1-B1c-97, Ext: 4535)

Several factors are converging to bring highend, surround sound audio to mass market buyers: the rise of the DVD and BluRay, new formats for multichannel audio, and widespread use of digital signal processors (DSPs) in audio systems. This project looks into the exciting area of using signal processing to enhance the performance of surround speakers. This system automatically measures and corrects the acoustics of the multichannel sound system for the specific room where the system is being set up, compensating for non-ideal room acoustics, loudness of program and speaker response. Potentially, there are several companies who are keen to commercialize this product. A/P Gan Woon Seng (Loc:S2-B2b-68, Ext: 4538)

A multiple channel active noise control system is proposed to control the noise in the car enclosure. Microphone and car speaker are set up to pick up error signals, process them (equalization and noise shaping) using common sound control tools (LabVIEW) running in notebook. The processed signals are played back by the sound system in the car via NI COMPACT RIO. There are two phases to this project: (i) student capture the noise signature in the automobile, and (ii) perform simulation and processing in the notebook before porting to the sound system.
