How to use Eviews

This is a very simple tutorial showing you how to enter data in Eviews and run a regression. 1. Open Eviews. 2. Go to the File menu, click on New, click on Workfile. 3. In the new window that pops up, choose Unstructured / Undated in Workfile Structure Type. 4. Type in the number of observations in Data Range: Observations (in question 1 of your first assignment, there are 7 observations). 5. Click OK. 6. To enter a small set of data, go to the Quick menu, click on Empty Group (Edit Series). 7. Youll see a window like the one below (you may have to scroll up or move the cursor up one cell to see the second row labeled obs).

8. Type in the variable names in the obs row. For instance, type in ATT (for AT&T data) in the box highlighted above and press ENTER. Since our data are numbers, make sure Numeric series is chosen and click OK. 3

9. In the ATT column, click on the row labeled 1 and enter the value (0.82) for the first observation. Press ENTER to move the the next row and enter values for the remaining 6 observations. 10. Now enter the variable name GNP in the second column and enter the values. Your data window should now look like this:

11. Thats it for entering data. You can change how the data is displayed by rightclicking and choosing Display format. You may want to play around in this window to learn more. 12. Note that ATT is your dependent variable and GNP is your independent variable, and we want to run the following regression: ATT = 0 + 1 GNP + . 13. To run a regression, click on the Proc button (highlighted above). Choose Make Equation. 14. In Equation specification, type in att c gnp. The first variable is your dependent variable (ATT), the second variable says that there is a constant (i.e., we have 0 in our regression), and the third variable is your independent variable (GNP). 15. In the lower part of the window, you will see that the default method is least squares and the full sample is chosen (observations 1 through 7) so you dont have to change anything (see next page).

16. Click OK and youll see a new window pop up with your regression results.

17. The number highlighted is red is your estimate of 0 and the number highlighted in blue is your estimate of 1, with the corresponding standard error and t-stats. 5

How to use SPSS to run a regression

Assuming you know how to enter data in SPSS, heres how you run a regression: 1. You have the data in the following form:

2. Click on Analyze in the menu, and choose Regression and choose Linear. 3. Use ATT as the dependent variable and GNP as the independent variable by clicking on the variable name in the left box and then clicking the arrow in the corresponding section on the right (see next page). You dont have to enter anything else. 4. Click OK. 5. The SPSS viewer pops up with a lot of results. The R2 values are reported in the Model Summary table, the degrees of freedom and F-value are reported in the ANOVA table, and the coefficient estimates are reported in the Coefficients table (see below). 6. The number highlighted is red is your estimate of 0 and the number highlighted in blue is your estimate of 1, with the corresponding standard error and t-stats (were interested in the unstandardized coefficient estimates here). 7. The estimates are the same as the ones obtained from Eviews (but the number of decimal places shown is different). 6
