Commission for Persons with Disabilities Medford Human Rights Commission April 24, 2013

Present: Lois Bronnenkant, Henry Milorin, Steve Honeycutt, Diane McLeod and guest; Dale Bryan (potential new member) Excused: Charlotte Swartz Introductions February & March Minutes Tabled New Business Mass Humanities Grant Diane got an email from Marga Varea of the Tracing Center on Histories. They receive the grant and will touch base with us in May. We need to form a committee. Diane will send an email to all. Fair Housing Forum Diane set up the Fair Housing for Friday, May 3, 2013 in the Council Chambers at 9:30AM. Flyers have gone out along with emails to bankers, real estate, the MAHRC, and the Consortium group. Barbara Chandler will focus on Accommodation and Modification. Hate Graffiti Update The Chief wasnt present, but last Diane heard there were no suspects yet. In the days after the press conference people were following up with additional markings that had not been logged in. Steve asked if there were any particular issues with local immigrant groups. Diane mentioned Chief Saccos comments last meeting of issues in other communities as Brazilians are targeting other Brazilians, as they know they wont contact the Police. He is trying to work toward a better and more open relationship. Lois mentioned the difficulty discussed also with Georgiana (MFN) from last meeting about transportation for Haitian immigrants. The MBTAs route decisions have affected the community that relies solely on public transportation. Old Business Intern Project - Boston Medical Fellow

Diane received a plan from Lynn who considered a family needs based survey or outreach. She thought the needs survey would be best. She submitted a list of providers to contact and a list of questions for review. Diane passed out a copy for review and comment. Everyone was pleased with it. Diane suggested any revisions should be submitted by tomorrow so she can get going on this. Disability Awards Diane has sent out and posted the Disability Awards forms. They are at the Library as well, and ran in the local newspapers. Commission Discussion Diane had copies of her section on policy (will email to everyone). Much of this was taken from Newtons recently revised policy. The red sections are the changes. Marie and Henry did not meet Chief Sacco not present Lois and Charlotte suggested keeping in the reference to legal counsel, including housing protection, including gender identity and expression, and keeping the funding piece. Charlotte also wants concrete tasks and wants more productive meetings. The plan is for everyone to submit their sections to Diane ASAP so she can put them together as one document, meet with Solicitor Rumley and present a document to the Commission for review and a vote. Correspondence & Announcements Diane mentioned a disability program for area commissions that will be in Marlboro on June 7th. It is put on by MOD and the Disability Law Center. We are waiting for detailed information. Henry mentioned the Open Studios this weekend Meeting adjourned at 6:30PM. Next meeting on Wednesday, May 22, 2013 at 5:30PM
