Dr. Ken Mildwaters
Dr. Ken Mildwaters is a world-renowned expert specialising in the field of natural resources law. With over 30 years experience, he brings a unique blend of legal, academic and corporate experience to the field of oil and gas agreements. In practice as a partner and of-counsel with leading law firms in the UK, Europe and Australia, he has advised on a broad and varied range of projects, including: exploration, development, production, supply and sales activities in the oil, gas and minerals sectors; gas, coal and alternative source electrical power generation project; and gas pipeline and other infrastructure projects related to the natural resources sector. He has been involved in joint ventures, joint operating agreements, strategic alliances, licensing arrangements, farm-in and farm-out agreements, off-take and lifting agreements, royalty agreements, abandonment agreements, service agreements and transport agreements. In the natural resources sector, he has practical experience in the acquisition, disposal and financing of interests and assets, as well as capital raising activities and direct foreign investment. Ken is a speaker and faculty member at the Centre for Petroleum and Mineral Law Studies at the University of Dundee, where he lectures on Commercial Contracts in the International Oil and Gas Industries. In 1998/1999 he was a Visiting Scholar at the Graduate School of Business Administration at Harvard University. He is a member of the Australian Mining and Petroleum Law Association, Energy Law Association Inc. (New Zealand), International Bar Association Section on Energy and Natural Resources Law, Rocky Mountain Mineral Law Foundation, and United Kingdom Oil Lawyers Group.

This 12-week part-time distance education course will: I ntroduce and explain the principal contracts involved in the exploration and production of oil and gas E xamine the activities and phases involved during the lifecycle of a petroleum field A nalyse the agreements which come into play at each stage of the fields development. U se the concept of a contract matrix to introduce, analyse and explain the key agreements in a practical context The lifecycle of a petroleum field involves many phases and activities, from authorisation and exploration to production and decommissioning. At each stage, multiple parties cooperate, sharing rights and responsibilities. This intricate interplay of collaboration across diverse activities requires a complex contractual framework. Starting with the contracts involved in seeking and gaining authorisation, the programme syllabus progresses through the lifecycle of a petroleum field to examine: Joint operating agreements Contracts used in the exploration and appraisal phases Contracts relating to the production and sale of oil C ontracts governing abandonment and decommissioning at the end of the economic life of the field The six clearly written modules will benefit all professionals working in or supporting the oil and gas industry in any capacity who must have a solid grasp of the principal contracts which govern the exploration for and production of oil and gas and the relationships involved.
