How To Go From Point A To Point B In 10 Minutes Or Less

We’ve all been there. You roll out of
bed, brush your teeth and scrounge up the
energy to bend down and dig through your
Rubbermaid drawers to pull out some sort of
breakfast bar. Slumping out the door, you rip
open the wrapper and finish putting your left
arm through either a North Face or UConn
hoodie and begin to pick up the pace. As the
cold air reaches your ears you remember that
unfortunately you’re in Storrs in January, and
hurry yourself toward your first class. After
50 minutes of invigorating discussion, you
hear the magic words “and I think that’s it
for this class,” stand up, pull out your phone
to answer a text from friend sitting in their
English lecture and then think “Crap, I have
10 minutes to get across campus.”

last semester, you were hungover while doing
so, or you just didn’t factor in making the
walk at 9 a.m. However, using the right means
of transportation, whether by foot, car or bus,
combined with the quickest route can guar-
antee getting from class to class efficiently,
and on time. Here are some quick and easy
guidelines to get around campus.
Start: Torrey Life Sciences (TLS)
End: Arjona or Monteith
Estimated time: Eight minutes
If you are leaving TLS from the first floor or
above, head out toward the left of the TLS 154
lecture hall. Make your way down the stairs
between TLS & the biology/physics building.
Walk down the walkway towards Engineering
Building 2, and down Jorgensen Road. Bear
to the left at Glenbrook Road (Castleman will
be in front of you) and then hang a right in
between Castleman and Gentry. Walk straight

On any given night of the week there are
bars with beer on tap, shiny dance floors
and endless bottles of liquor, and students
are eager to break away from reading and
papers, if only a few hours, to take advantage
of what Storrs has to offer when it comes to
nightlife.
The toughest decision isn’t whether or not
to read ahead or to stay out that extra hour and
sacrifice a full night’s sleep, but it’s the deci-
sion of which bar to go to. Each of the three
campus bars has something to offer, it just
depends on the mood or special of the night.
Huskies
Huskies is a UConn nightlife landmark,
having been operated by the same people for
almost 15 years and their specials are staples
in the bar scene. The L-shaped layout, with a
space between the lounge and bar area, and
13 TVs – including a giant projector – are
perks for many bar patrons. The size of the
dance floor and music spun by the DJ makes
Huskies the best bar for students who are
looking to lose themselves in the music.
“I prefer Huskies because it has the biggest
dance floor, and I also like how it is separated
so I can sit down and talk with my friends,”
said Tracy Honig, an 8th-semester sociology
and human development and family studies
double major.
It’s safe to say Huskies isn’t the only bar
that plays Top 40 hits and classic college
favorites like “Sweet Caroline,” but the size
and setup of the bar makes for a true dance
atmosphere.
Also, despite the lines and impenetrable
crowd, it’s hard to bet against Huskies’ nickel
night experience, one of the most popular
specials in Storrs, so Huskies is the bar with
the best “Thirsty Thursday” special.
“Nickel night is the best because you can
get tanked off a dollar,” said Meagan Britt, an
8th-semester nursing major.

Your best bet in this situation is jump on the
apartment shuttle in front of Shippee and ride
that through to CLAS. The apartment shuttle
differs slightly from the rest of the busses on
campus, in that it arrives every 18 minutes
rather than every nine to 12. Keep that in
mind when you just walk out the back doors
to the recital hall and see it rounding the cor-
ner in front of you. Either way, ideally walk
straight down Mansfield Road and continue
through on “Mansfield Busway,” starting in
front of Beech Hall and continuing through to
Glenbrook Road.

Ted’s
For those looking to sit down with a pitch-
er, catch up with friends and watch a game or
live music, Ted’s Restaurant and Bar is the
place to go.
With wooden walls, low ceilings and a res-
taurant set up, Ted’s has a much more relaxed
atmosphere. A major plus for many devoted
Ted’s fans – no distinct dance floor.
The music scene at Ted’s is much different
than that of any of the other bars – instead of
a DJ, the bar welcomes live bands Thursday
through Saturday, performing everything
from The Eagles to Lit.
Ryan McDonald, the owner of Ted̓s, said
the restaurant charges a $5 cover only on
nights with live bands.
“The live music is great,” said Leah
Desjardins, and 8th-semester ecology and
evolutionary biology major. “They have
bands a few times a week and they’re always
entertaining.”
The restaurant is also offering karaoke
on some Wednesdays throughout the Spring
semester, according to McDonald.
In addition to musical entertainment, the
food and beer selections make Ted’s the best
choice for a game-day bar.
“They have great classic bar food like burg-
ers, wings and subs, I eat there at least one a
week,” Desjardins said. “And if you like beer
you should definitely go to Ted’s because they
have the best variety of beers on tap.”
Also, Ted̓s now features “When it snows
it flows” and “When it rains it pours,” pro-
motions for dollar domestic beers, which are
great for this tempered spring semester.
For those who aren’t big on beer, the bionic
beaver and blue orgasm pitchers are a great
mixed drink alternative.
McDonald said the staff at Ted̓s is work-
ing hard to improve the menu and pull in a
younger crowd.
“A lot of underclassmen don’t realize that
Ted̓s is a restaurant. We̓re hoping that we
can pull them in with the food, and when
they turn 21, they’ll come back for the bar,”

ʻParade̓ Of
Great Songs
A few friends of
mine and I were
having a conversa-
tion the other day
about this and that
and the usual col-
lege dorm room
nothing when our
discussion came
to music and
what our favor-
ite albums were.
It was then that
one of my friends
asked me what my
favorite album of
all time was.
I had to think
hard. Aside from
video games,
music has always
been my favorite escape from reality and my library
consists of hundreds and hundreds of albums. How
could I choose just one?
But then I got it. It wasn’t The Beatles or the
Stones, Zeppelin or The Who. It wasn’t Dylan or
the Boss, or any other usual “best album ever” list
topper.
It was My Chemical Romance and their 2006
album, “The Black Parade,” and it was by complete
accident.
I remember seeing a headline on a cover of
Blender magazine before the album’s release. It read
“My Chemical Romance’s Masterpiece.” I was in
disbelief. Before that album’s release My Chemical
Romance had been squarely placed under the emo
label, and I never thought they could deliver some-
thing that would be considered real rock.
When the album came out, a friend of mine pur-
chased it and made me a copy. Eventually, it made
it to my iPod, but I never really listened to it. One
day, while on shuffle mode, “The Sharpest Lives”
began playing. It was fantastic, unlike anything I’d
heard before, and I couldn’t believe it when I saw
it was MCR.
The simple repetitive chord was accompanied
only by lead singer Gerard Way’s vocals.

Then it just took
off and I was taken aback. I listened to the album in
its entirety that day, then again and again.
“Parade” is a mix of rock opera and a musical
storytelling that taps Queen, Bowie and even the
conceptual influence of The Beatles’ “Sgt. Pepper’s
Lonely Hearts Club Band” and blends it into one
57-minute epic. The album centers on a cancer-
ridden character only known as “The Patient,” who
dies over the course of the album, and his inevitable
departure and reflection on life.
The album begins with a track titled “The End,”
which is basically the patient’s final moments in
this twisted story, and then flows right into a track
fans of “Guitar Hero II” are familiar with, “Dead!”
“Dead!” – which, though not the best song on the
album, is probably my favorite – is easily one of
the most explosive, catchy and upbeat songs about
death I’ve ever heard.
“Parade” progresses through two equally awe-
some tracks, “This Is How I Disappear” and “The
Sharpest Lives,” and then takes an abrupt halt into
what has to be the best song on the CD and the best
song I would have to say of the past five years:
“Welcome to the Black Parade.”
Never before have I heard a song as triumphant,
as powerful or as energetic as this anthem of
anthems. From its epic marching band drum line
build-up to its fast-paced body, Way and the rest of
band seem to be calling to the youth of the nation
to stand up and enlist in the angst-filled army they
have created.
What really puts the song over the top for me
though, is the ending that calls back to the same
victorious feel I get from Queen’s “We Are The
Champions.” Way wails over brass and drums with
unmatched tenacity, “I’m just a man / I’m not a hero
/ Just a boy, who’s meant to sing this song / Just a
man / I’m not a hero / I don’t care.”
It’s awe-inspiring, I’ll say that much.
The rest of the album, from “House of Wolves”
to awesome sing-a-long, “Teenagers” to “Famous
Last Words,” ties together to deliver the most well-
rounded album I’ve ever listened to – every song is
important and not one is out of place.
Needless to say, my friends berated me for my
choice, but it is one I stand by. Sure, I could have
gone with an obvious choice like “Born to Run”
or “Sgt. Pepper’s,” but where’s the fun in that? If
you’ve never listened to it, I urge you to join the
“Black Parade;” you won’t regret it.
