India, Grupo Niche Perform Spicy Numbers At Latin Fest

Walking into UConn’s
annual LatinFest celebration
on Saturday night was a bit
like being transported into one
of the hottest nightclubs in
Buenos Aires or Bogota. With
glamorous dresses, authentic
South American cuisine, a wide
array of drink specials and
award-winning Latino musi-
cians, the night had more than
1,000 audience members danc-
ing and enjoying themselves
without a hitch. Well, almost
without a hitch. With nearly
the entire audience constant-
ly moving about, seating was
quite a problem for even those
with pre-purchased tickets.
The first performance was
that of the UConn student
dance group BAILE, whose
performance was broadcast
live on Univision. The group
flawlessly executed a variety
of traditional Latin dances,
including audience favorites
the salsa and the meringue.
Paul Concepcion, a 6th-se-
mester political science and
economics major who partici-
pated in the dancing, said that
the group had practiced for
more than three months before
their performance.
“This last week, we were
practicing six hours a day,
every day,” Concepcion said.
“It was totally worth it though.
This is the best night of the
year.”
BAILE president Jennifer
Hernandez, an 8th-semester
electrical engineering major,
said that practice was so
intense because of the number
of different dances being per-
formed.
“We did a lot of different
dances this year because we
wanted to show off the diversi-
ty of these beautiful, tradition-
al dances,” Hernandez said.

culture, but unfortunately, a lot
of the younger generation has
not been exposed to them.”
Jonathan Serrano, another
BAILE dancer and 6th-se-
mester computer science and
engineering major, agreed.
Serrano, who recently traveled
to Puerto Rico, said he was
saddened to learn that the more
modern Reggaeton music has
supplanted the more traditional
Latin dances.
“You go down there and
you start dancing salsa and the
younger kids look at you like,
‘What’s he doing?’” Serrano
said. “These traditional dances
are very, very beautiful, but no
one really knows them any-
more. We’re trying to change
that.”

DJ Eddie One played popular
Latin music that successfully
got the rest of the audience up
and dancing. Mixing every-
thing from Daddy Yankee
and Ciara to more traditional
Spanish favorites, the DJ had
the dance floor packed for over
an hour.
DJ Eddie One was followed
by a performance by India, a
Grammy-nominated salsa art-
ist who began the night with
a slow song as a tribute to
her mother. India’s strong, sul-
try voice and slightly slower
melodies changed the tempo
on the dance floor as men and
women began to dance more
intimately.
It wasn’t until hours later
that Grupo Niche, the night’s
other headliner, took the stage.
