By : Dr. Trilok Kumar Jain Dean, ISBM (International School of Business Management) Suresh Gyan Vihar University Jaipur www.gyanvihar.org Isbm@gyanvihar.org 9414430763 The age of 18 is a turning point. The person transits from adolesence to youth and enters to the reality of life. He matures to face the real challenges of the life. This is the age when the person acquires skills for the life and prepares for the real challenges. This is the age when the person acquires professional competencies, which enable him to make his mark. This is also the age when the person undertakes graduation. Graduation is not just a degree, it is preparation for life. It is the beginning of the competition for survival. But this is different from other competitions. A graduation programme should enable the following : a. skill building - imparting right skills for life - so that a person can make a living b. value inculcation - imparting right set of values so that we become good human being c. decision making opportunities - graduation programmes enable students to take up important decisions. The college offers opportunities for organising various events, which enable students to develop their decision making skills. Thus the students are able to take up appropriate level of risks, they are able to evaluate different options d. leadership opportunities : graduation programmes sharpen leadership and team building skills. You are in a group where people pursue different goals, yet you have to try to bring them together with the common threads. You are able to create a team out of a group e. communication skill development - graduation enables students to

communicate and interact with persons from different backgrounds, thus the person develops his communication skills. f. expression and confidence building - graduation programmes give opportunities to the youth for self expression, which ultimately builds their confidence. At Gyan Vihar University, we ensure that the youth get the best opportunities for self development and competency enhancement. For this we conduct many programmes besides regular studies. Some of these are : a. interaction with entrepreneurs - so that the youth also become entrepreneurial b. community clubs - where the students take up community service and other activities as hobbies and slowly matures as a constructive social contributor c. sports - which build team building, leadership and communication skills d. interaction with great leaders - we regularly invite great leaders so that students can find some role models before them. Last year we invited Medha Patkar, Rajendra Singh and Bhai ji for interaction with the students. Thus students were able to see some really great personalities before themselves. e. Outreach - the students go out to tribal areas, far off places, rural areas and try to experience different perspectives of life.
