SIEMENS PAKISTAN:
LEADING THE IT REVOLUTION IN THE COUNTRY Siemens Pakistan Engineering Co. Ltd., with its headquarters in Karachi and two regional branches in Lahore and Islamabad, has two joint ventures with PTCL, i.e.: Telephone Industries of Pakistan Ltd (TIP), Haripur and Carrier Telephone Industries Ltd (CTI), Islamabad. Including these non-consolidated minority stakes, Siemens currently owns five factories in the country. Siemens is making a major contribution to Pakistan's economic development. It has added over 2,500 MW to Pakistan's power generation capacity and has supplied more than 60% of 3.5 million telephone lines in Pakistan. Siemens is locally manufacturing distribution and power transformers, low- and medium-voltage switchgear, packaged substations, Diesel Generating Sets, vacuum circuit breakers and motor starters. Manufactured to international standards, these products are also exported to other countries in the region. INFORMATION AND COMMUNICATION (ICN) Siemens is the Market leader in this field. With joint venture local manufacturing entities producing state of the art Digital Switches, Optical Fiber Transport equipment, Digital Microwave and standard Telephones, Siemens ICN has a unique position in the country. Local production is adequately complemented by local expertise in all the fields of Information and Communication. A large base of qualified foreign trained engineers ensures the best service right from Conception/Planning of a project to its after sales Operation and Maintenance. Around 60% of telephone lines working in Pakistan are supplied by Siemens, with almost 90% of the Long Distance Telephony part (Digital Radio and Optic Fiber Equipment). Similarly Siemens has supplied, installed and commissioned a Voice Messaging Platform for PTCL in all the major cities. This enables PTCL to offer valueadded services of Voice Mail in addition to basic telephony. Siemens has also set up for PTCL a modern Internet infrastructure in all major cities. The total capacity of the installed infrastructure is 5000 modem ports, catering to the need of approx. 50,000 Internet users. This is in addition to the several other smaller Internet set-ups established by Siemens in Pakistan for various private Internet Service Provide Siemens renders Operation & Maintenance Services of Digital Exchanges, consisting of more than 2 million ports of PTCL/NTC network throughout the country. Similarly Operation & Maintenance Services are provided to Mobilink for their Mobile Digital Switches.

In the ICN Training Center of Siemens Pakistan training programmes are conducted for Digital Switches, Internet, Voice Messaging, Access Networks. These programs are for customers as well as for own engineers. This facility has saved huge cost of training, which was being given abroad.

CBTs
During my internship, I completed different Computer Based Training (CBTs) such as: Digital Telephony: This is an interesting topic that deals with the basic terms of digital transmission; principles of PCM transmission; tasks of digital exchange and basic signaling methods for inter-exchange signaling. Introduction to Digital Electronic Switching System: Introduction to EWSD is the most important CBT. It deals with the overview of functions and structures of EWSD switching system. It introduces the Hardware, Software and Operation & Maintenance of EWSD. Common Channel Signaling 7: This subject matter deals with signaling between exchanges, CCS7 Network and CCS7 Structure (Message Transfer Part & User Part). It also differentiates between signaling methods: Common Channel SignalingCCS and Channel Associated Signaling- CAS. CP 113C: CP113C is the Siemens Coordination Processor. This topic deals with the function and structure of the coordination processor. The main tasks are to introduce the principle of redundancy, supervisory principle for the processors, advantages of the memory principle, different functions of BAP & CAP and components of I/O areas and their functions. Introduction to Global System for Mobile Communications: This interesting topic deals with the notion of digital cellular mobile radio network, notion of GSM and DCS, exceptional features of GSM/DCS mobile radio networks, service concepts in GSM/DCS, Functions and applications of Subscriber Identity Module. D-900:

D-900 is the base station of Siemens. It comprises of the following network elements: 1. Base Station Controller 2. Base Transceiver Station Equipment 3. Transcoding and Base Adaptation Unit 4. Local Maintenance Terminal ISDN: I learnt, in brief, about the basic services that are available in the telephone network: 1. Telephony 2. Teletex 3. Telefax 4. Telex 5. Videotex 6. Data Transmission 7. Image Transmission 8. Telecontrol ATM: ATM stands for Asynchronous Transfer Mode. ATM was introduced as the base technology for B-ISDN. By means of ATM data of any type of service, bandwidth and frequency can be transferred and switched. The subtopics covered in this CBT are: 1. ATM vs Other Transfer Modes 2. ATM Criteria 3. ATM Cell Transport 4. ATM Networks 5. ATM Application SDH: SDH is an acronym for Synchronous Digital Hierarchy. It is an important transmission type these days. The subject matter includes: 1. Principles of PDH Multiplexing 2. Characteristics of SDH 3. Mapping 4. Pointer 5. Overhead 6. Monitoring OMT Operation 7.1W: The subtopics include: 1. Operation of EWSD exchanges 2. Man Machine Language 3. Expanded Functions O&M Terminal

Internetworking Overview: This CBT gives a general introduction overview of the Internetworking. It includes the following topics: 1. Introduction 2. OSI Model 3. Common Technologies - Topologies 4. Common Technologies Protocols 5. Routing Basis 6. Routing Algorithms WAN Connections On CISCO Routers: The subtopics included in this CBT are: 1. Introduction to WAN Services 2. Introduction to Point to Point Protocol 3. Introduction to Dial On Demand Routing X.25 Configuration on CISCO Routers: X.25 is a transmission technique for packet switched networks. The subject matter includes: 1. Introduction to X.25 2. Configuring X.25 3. X.25 Scalability

Besides going through all these CBTs, I have studied different documents given to me by Mr. Yousaf. The topics cover the following technologies: DSL B-ISDN Cable Modems VSAT Introduction to ISDN

I also frequently went to the test exchange to get a better knowledge of the EWSD system.

Summary
At Siemens, I was assigned to the Information and Communication Networks Services (ICN-S) Department. It was my first internship experience and I learnt a lot from it. I am thankful to Mr. Syed Asadullah, General Manager Information and Communication Networks Services and Mr. Yousaf, Member Technical Assistance Center (TAC) Information and Communication Networks Services, for their fullest cooperation. My internship here at Siemens ICN-S has been very educational and professional.
