What are future plans of WC 1?

Related to the topic of the risk of building infrastructures due to climate change and possible adaptation measures, there is the interest to work on the probabilistic modeling of natural hazards. The safety and performance of structures under fire is also a subject of interest for the members of the Committee. Are there any recent activities or issues of WC 1 you would like to mention? We recently organised a Special Session in the London Symposium last September on the subject of Robustness of Structures. WC 1 is also sponsoring, jointly with JCSS (Joint Committee on Structural Safety) the 6th International Forum on Engineering Decision Making (IFED) on the subject of Risk for Temporary Structures and Activities, in Alberta (Canada). Does your WC interrelate with other groups outside IABSE? WC 1 has a priority relation with JCSS (Joint Committee on Structural Safety). There is also a strong collaboration with IABMAS (International Association for Bridge Maintenance and Safety). Several members of WC 1 are also members of these two organisations.

to a safe and efficient use of bridge erection equipment. Bridge industry is moving to mechanised construction because this saves labour, shortens project duration and enhances quality. Mechanised construction requires a level of technical culture adequate to the complexity and sophistication of new-generation bridge erection equipment. Adequate technical culture would save human lives and would facilitate the decision-making processes with more accurate risk analyses.

Does your WG interrelate with other groups outside IABSE? Of course, several WG 6 members and myself are involved at different levels in the ASBI, ASCE and other such associations. A few months ago the United Nations invited me to write Chapter 6.37.40 Bridge Erection Machines of UNESCO Encyclopedia of Life Support Systems. That 51-page document is not distributed through the IABSE but I would be pleased to send it to whoever may be interested just let me know at the above email address. This is not a WG 6 document, but still highlights the international interest for the topic. Do have any wishes from IABSE? IABSE should have a broader participation of contractors to be a really multi-disciplinary bridge engineering association. This would require, in my opinion, a less academic editorial line of SEI and IABSE symposia. Professional instruction seminars like the one we held in Singapore would be well received by the international bridge engineering community and could also be a good revenue source for the IABSE. Who are the members of WG 6? M. Meyer (VSL, Singapore) is the Vice-Chair Members are S. Cardwell (Ballinger Berger, Germany), M. Debritz (ThyssenKrupp, Germany), J.J. daSilva (WBI Consulting, Italy), J. deBoer (deBoer, The Netherlands), S. Harridge (TGP, United Kingdom), E. Homsi (Flatiron, USA), M. Jatkar (Gammon India, India), M.S. Lee (COWI, Korea), B. Mognon (Eden Technology, Italy), J. Nitschke (NRS, Norway), A. Rovera (DEAL Rizzani deEccher, Italy) and H.Y. Shin (Samsung, Korea).

Working Group 6: Bridge Construction Equipment

Marco Rosignoli, USA, Chair of WG 6 since 2009, Profession: Southeast Division Lead of Bridge and Tunnel Professional Services, HNTB Corporation, USA. Contact: mrosignoli@hntb.com What is the objective of WG 6? The work of WG 6 is addressed at educating owners, designers and contractors

What is WG 6 currently working on? In February 2010 we met in Zurich for our kickoff meeting and in November 2010 we held the 1st IABSE International Seminar on Bridge Erection Equipment in Singapore, which gathered 180 attendees. Then we have been working on the special 4/2011 SEI edition, which has just been published. What are future plans of WG 6? The future plans are writing a SED manual on bridge erection equipment. The members of WG 6 are busy senior bridge engineering professionals, most of them are in top management roles in their firms, and production of the manual is taking much longer than the initial expectations.
