1. The area of a basketball court is twice of its half court.

If the dimensions of the half court are 5x-10 long and 6x-14 wide, and the area is 60x - 60, what is the perimeter and area of the whole court? Given: 5x - 10, the length of the half court 6x - 14, the wide of the half court 60x - 60, area of the half court Equation: (5x-10)(6x-14) = 60x - 60 30x2 130x + 140 = 60x 60 30x2 130x 60x + 140 + 60 = 0 30x2 190x + 200 = 0 (30x 40)(x 5) = 0

The formula in finding the perimeter of a rectangle is 2L + 2W. Since the dimensions of the half court are 15 meters long and 16 meters wide, our formula now will be 4L + 2W. Youve noticed that the formula and the relationship between the length and the width seem kind of an odd thing, because the half court is divided according to its length, therefore dividing its length into four without affecting its width. Therefore, the perimeter is 92 meters and the area is 480m2.

Use x=5 Length = 5x 10 =5(5) 10 =25 10 =15 Wide = 6x 14 =6(5) 14 =30 14 =16 Area =60x 60 =60(5)-60 =300-60 = 240 Check (5x -10)(6x-14)=60x - 60 (15)(16) = 240 240 = 240 The formula in finding the area of a rectangle is length multiplied by width. Since the area of the half court is 240m2, and we need to find the area of the whole court, easily multiply it by 2. Then the area of the whole court is 480m2. We multiplied it by 2 because the 240m2 is only the area of the half court.

2. Two tubes, working together, can fill the reservoir with the liquid in 12 hours. The larger tube, if works separately, can fill the reservoir 18 hours less than the smaller tube. How long will it take to fill the reservoir using the smaller tube only? Let x be the time to fill the reservoir by the smaller tube Let x -18 be the time to fill the reservoir by the larger tube Thus, in one single hour the smaller tube will fill part of the reservoir volume, while the larger tube will fill part of the reservoir volume in each single hour. Working together, these tubes will fill part of the reservoir volume in each single hour. Since two tubes working together fill the tank in 12 hours, this gives the equation Equation:

] x(x-18)

12x-216+12x=x2 18x -x2 + 12x+12x+18x-216=0 (-x2 + 42x 216 = 0) 1 X2 42x + 216 = 0 A= 1, B=-42, C=216

Use n=-1 n= -1 n + 2= 1 Check n = 7 7(9) =4[7+ (9)]-1 63=4(16)-1 63=64-1 63=63 Check n = -1 -1(1) =4[-1+ (1)]-1 -1=4(0)-1 -1=0-1 -1 = -1 There we have two pairs of integers: 7 & 9 and -1 &1

=6 Use n = 36 x = 36 Check

[ 12+24=36 36=36

The second root doesnt fit the given conditions (if smaller tube fills the reservoir in 6 hours, then larger one should make it in 6- 18= -12 hours, which has no sense). Therefore it will take 36 hours to fill the reservoir using the smaller tube.

3. The product of two consecutive odd integers is 1 less than four times their sum. Find the two integers. Let n be the first number Let n+2 be the second number Equation: n(n+2)= 4[n+(n+2)]-1 n2 + 2n = 4[2n+2]-1 n2+2n=8n+8-1 n2+2n=8n+7 n2+2n-8n-7= 0 n2 - 6n - 7= 0 (n - 7)(n + 1)= 0 n - 7= 0 ; n + 1= 0 n = 7 ; n= -1 Use n=7 n= 7 n + 2= 9
