TenCate Geosynthetics materials that make the difference TenCate Geosynthetics Europe is a subsidiary of the Dutch Royal TenCate, a multinational concern which combines textile technology with related chemical processes to produce a multitude of functional materials. These products are used mainly in safety and protective clothing, in aviation and space technology, for sports and leisure activities, and in infrastructure and environmental applications. TenCate Geosynthetics Europe markets geosynthetics, products which have proven themselves in the construction industry for more than 30 years. At TenCate Geosynthetics Europe we develop and produce geosynthetics for a variety of different end-uses in modern civil engineering. In addition to this comprehensive range of products, as a system integrator we are active in developing tailor-made solutions to problems in road, railway and hydraulic engineering, and for retaining structures and many other specialist applications (e.g. Geotube for coastal protection and embankment construction). Here, our close contact with geotechnicians enables us to pay particular attention to the special requirements of the civil and geotechnical-engineering industry. We offer a broad range of nonwovens, geogrids, and woven products which have been specially designed to give optimum performance in the main functions of separation, ltration, protection, and reinforcement. This product portfolio is complemented by drainage composites and erosion-protection mats as well as special products, e.g. for pavement refurbishment. As an international company with headquarters in Linz, Austria, TenCate Geosynthetics Europe is a leading company in geosynthetics. Our world-wide sales and distribution network is staffed by competent sales and technical representatives. Continuous technological development, product innovation, in-house software for geosynthetic design, and a team of applications technologists with extensive know-how in the areas of geotechnical, application, plastics and textile technology are a clear indication of the leadership role played by TenCate Geosynthetics Europe in the production, design and marketing of geosynthetics.

Not only in reinforced soil structures, but also in road and railway applications, Rock PEC products provide the ideal combination of functions. It separates the granular base course layer from the soft and possibly saturated subgrade, maintaining the mechanical and physical properties and the effective thickness of the base course over a longer service period. The unique lter and drainage capability of Rock PEC allows free water ow,
enabling accelerated dissipation of excess pore water pressure. Besides, it prevents migration (pumping) of ne soil particles from the subgrade into the base course. Stabilisation of the subgrade and reinforcement of the base course layer is provided by the high strength polyester yarns. In effect the PEC does the job of a separation geotextile and a geogrid combined.
This results in the following benets for road- and railway applications: Improved service life Equivalent performance with reduced base course thickness Minimized disturbance of subgrade Provide access and constructability over very soft surfaces Establish a well-compacted non yielding platform
Rock PEC products are exible and easy to install. Their surface structure and exibility ensure excellent soil interaction.

TenCate Miragrid GX
tegrated in a wide variety of facing systems to provide a superior and structurally sound nished wall. The connection capacity, which often utilises the frictional interface between Miragrid geogrid and various block types, ensures optimal strength mobilization and thus cost-effective design. Miragrid GX is primarily used for reinforcement of retaining walls, bridge abutments and steep reinforced slopes. The biaxial versions of Miragrid GX are used to stabilise roads and other trafcked areas. In landll construction Miragrid geogrids are often used to reinforce the mineral seals and prevent slope slippage and instability of the cover soil.

Installation
1 2
1 Cleaning of the road surface. 2 Filling of cracks (> 4 mm) and pot-holes. 3 The total effective tack-coat quantity of 1.2 kg/m2 is evenly applied over the whole area, extending max. 10 cm over the edge of the geocomposite to be installed. The type of the tack-coat depends on the climatic conditions and on the type of asphalt overlay to be used. 4 Installation of the paving felt starts after curing of the emulsion has began, as this small quantity cannot bleed through. PGM is laid into the tack-coat by unrolling using specially designed laying equipment. Pretensioning is not necessary.
5 Even distribution of the second tack coat quantity (B), consisting of parts B1 and B2: B1 is required to saturate the paving felt approx. 0.8 kg/m2 of 70% emulsion. B2 is required to embed the chippings. The quantity to be applied varies according to the recommendations of the emulsion producer, and depends on the quality, quantity, shape and size of the chippings to be used as for conventional surface dressing applications. Immediately after application of the emulsion on top of the paving felt, the required quantity of chippings is spread evenly. This is followed by compaction, preferably with rubber-tyred rollers. In the case of double or multi-layered surface dressings, it must be assured that the tack-coat of the second layer is in full contact with the rst layer. After a period of 1 to 3 days, excess chippings should be removed using appropriate road-sweeping equipment. In the case of spot maintenance, the paving felt can be laid into the uncured emulsion, after which the surface is covered with sand to allow temporary trafc.
6 The hot-rolled asphalt (min. thickness 40 mm) can be installed immediately after the unrolling of PGM-G. It is recommended to use crawler-type pavers. The temperature of the asphalt mix must not exceed 160C during installation. This normally corresponds to a mixing temperature of max. 190C. At high ambient temperatures, or if an excess of tack-coat bleeds throught, sticking of the tyres of the paver of trucks can be avoided by spreading asphalt mix or chippings into the wheel paths.

TECHNICAL DATA
Composite (mechanically bonded continuous-filament nonwoven + glass filaments) Polypropylene, UV-stabilised + glass filaments
Strength at 2% strain1) E-Modulus of the glass laments Mesh width of the glass laments Mass per unit area [EN ISO 9865] Melting point [ASTM D 276] Recycling Forms of supply Width Length
1) Strength values refer to the glass lament reinforcement. Important precaution! Store rolls in a dry place! Follow the installation guidelines!
Glass laments are incombustible and temperature resistant up to 400 C 100% recyclable with the conventional methods
DESIGN PRINCIPLE
-) The calculation is based on a comparison between the result of standard calculations for pavement rehabilitation and a calculaton using a so called fabric effectiveness factor (FEF). The result of the comparison is the extende lifetime of the structure due to the use of the geosynthetic material. The pavement calculations are done according to the manual series 17 (MS 17) of the Asphalt institute (USA) or according to a mixture out of MS 17 and the RVS 3.63 (Austria). The FEF is evaluated by laboratory testing. Test according to Simulation testing of geotextile membranes for reective cracking Proceeding out of the 2nd Int. conf. geotextiles Vol.2.

Breaking energy
Energy-to-break with PGM-G: The area under the load-displacement curve corresponds to the work done at break.
Test result: With geosynthetic, the stresses at the crack are signicantly reduced.
Application
Complete asphalt reinforcement
