The Plight of Women (2 marks) 1. Which of the two sexes/genders has fewer rights not only in the world in general but more so in the developing world? (1) WOMEN! 2. What is the relationship (connection) between education, fertility, and economic development? (1) The more educated a woman is, the better understanding she has of how to control the number of children she has. The less children a woman has, the better standard of living she and her children have. More educated women = better economy and standard of living for everyone. This is the key to breaking the cycle of poverty. Childrens Status (4.5 marks ) 3. What is the main crisis affecting many children in developing countries? (0.5) The Under-5 mortality Rate 4. What are the arguments for keeping children under 16 years of age in the army? (1) The population in Africa is heavily under the age of 18. Epidemic Health Crisis (3.5 marks) 10. How many people around the world lack clean, safe drinking water? (0.5) 1.2 BILLION 11. What is the relationship between water and disease? (1) Water sources such as rivers that supply water for drinking, cooking and bathing are also used for disposal of human waste. 12. What is Bilharzia? (0.5) A waterborne disease in Africa. 13. How can a person contact AIDS? (0.5) Sexual activity, blood transfusions, needles, mother-to-child during birth. 14. What is a pandemic? Why is there so much concern over Africas HIV rates? (1) An epidemic occurring over a large geographic area. The ones dying are often the productive workers. Solutions (10 marks) 15. What is multilateral aid? (0.5) Aid funded by a number of different governments. 16. What is the drawback about tied aid? (0.5) There are conditions attached to it, which usually benefit the countries giving the aid. 17. What is CIDA? An NGO? (1) Canadian International Development Agency Non-Governmental Organization 18. Is the aid directed by NGOs successful? Explain why or why not. (1)

Yes it is, because it helps people at the grassroots level, meaning they have direct contact and influence with individual people. 19. How have NGOs influenced national governments? (1) They have inspired them to promote small-scale, sustainable projects. 20. Although Canada has pledged to donate 0.7% of its GDP towards aid, it has never reached that target. Should Canada provide the 0.7% of its GDP commitment or not? Answer YES or NO and outline the pros (positives) and cons (negatives) for this question. (2) Your opinion. 21. Should Canada link its foreign aid to human rights? Complete the chart below. Then answer this question: Which side of the debate do you support? Explain your reasons. If Canada insists that countries must have proper human rights before giving them aid, it will: convince countries to improve their human rights not contribute to the perpetuation of human rights violations leave the people in the particular country even more desperate.

If Canada ignores the human rights violations happening in a country and gives them aid regardless, it will: give people the help they need possibly contribute to more human rights violations if the local government doesnt properly distribute the aid. Not discriminate/favour certain places in need over others.
