The Five Forms of Government

Monarchy: The country of Denmark is ruled by a modern monarchy. It is ruled by
Margrethe Alexandrine Þorhildur Ingrid. In Denmark there is a constitutional monarchy
which means that the queen is not all powerful but rather shares power with parliament.
For example laws cannot be passed without the consent of the queen and parliament. The
queen is also the supreme commander of the Danish Defense Forces. Denmark has a
population of 5,430,590 people and has a very strong economy.

Timarchy: The country of Sudan is ruled by timarchy. It is ruled by one military leader
named Omar al-Bashir and he controls all political power in the country. He led a military
coup in 1989 where he took over the government. Sudan is bordered by Egypt, Ethiopia,
and Kenya but is disliked by many of its neighbors. The people of Sudan are suffering
because of all the violence happening in the country. The rebel forces and the regular
military of the country are killing, rapping, stealing, and torturing the people. Sudan has
about 37 million people and has serious economic problems.

Oligarchy: South Africa during the 20th century was an oligarchy. After the Second Boer
War, South Africa was run by the white population. Who only made up 20% of the
people living there. These whites ran the government and denied the black people their
rights. They did not give them good education and there was much segregation. The
black people were also not allowed to vote or to run for positions in the government and
were very poor and were in the lower class. South Africa became a democracy in 1994.

Democracy: The United States of America is a modern democracy. In this democracy the
people have the power. They vote for the leader and for laws of the country and states.
They also have fair and equal right. The government is based on a system of checks and
balances where the three branches of government keep each other from becoming too
powerful. The three branches are Executive, Judiciary, and Legislative and the president
is part of the executive branch. The president serves a term of 4 years and if elected again
can serve a total of 2 terms. It is currently the most powerful country in the world and has
a good economy. It has a population of about 300 million people. The president is
currently George W. Bush.

Tyranny: North Korea is an example of a modern Tyranny. It is ruled by Kim Jong-il who
is a dictator. This means that he is all powerful and is the permanent head of the country
and military. The ruling party is called the Democratic Front for the Reunification of the
Fatherland and is made up of three smaller parties which nominate people to serve in the
government. The people can not vote. The country is said to have one of the worst human
rights records in the world because they have detention camps, torture, murder, medical
experimentation and persecution against Christians. Its relations with other country are
very bad because it has been trying to make nuclear weapons. It has had many famines
and diseases where millions of people have died over the past years. It is not known how
the economy is doing because the country is so secretive and will not give out statistics
about it.
