    Historical fiction usually has something to say about the present in which it was written. In what ways does The Mannequin Makers talk to 2013? The Mannequin Makers takes place on three different continents, at sea and on an uninhabited island. How do those locations inform the storytelling? A body builder and his disciple, the quest for lifelike mannequins, an aging surf-lifesaver: what is the novel saying about the perfect human form? There are a number of characters who cannot talk at various points in the novel, while others, like Flossie, do not get the chance to tell their side of the story.
