Wherever youve been and wherever youre going in life, Salem College Courses for Community offers a series of courses to aid you in the journey.
Our unique role is to make high-quality non-credit courses accessible to everyone, creating opportunities to keep your mind active and engaged. Schedules, Registration & Credits


Classes are offered on most weekday evenings with a duration of one to two hours each session. Class and activity schedules range from single sessions to several weeks. Prices vary depending on the type of class and number of weeks the course is scheduled to meet. Registration fees are competitive, yet affordable. Class sizes are limited in order to enhance the learning environment and encourage interaction among participants. For those seeking professional acknowledgement, certificates of completion are available upon request. Numerous courses qualify for educator renewal credits. Required documentation is provided. Courses are individually priced with group/ friend discounts available as printed. Once you are registered, a map of campus and a letter of confirmation with course details will be mailed to you. Registration is ongoing and without deadlines.

The Wonderful World of Opera [Heye]


Opera is one of the grandest of all entertainment forms, and yet it is one of the least understood. Bruce Heye will guide you through this art form so that you will appreciate all of the complexities. We will explore a variety of opera performances, focusing on The Flying Dutchman, which will be presented by Piedmont Opera Theatre. The fourth class will be at the Stevens Center where we will have orchestra seating for the grand performance. No refunds will be made after Oct. 1. Learning the basic principles of organizing will help students in the class formulate an organizational system they can implement at home or work. The Beginners Guide to Wine
Why miss out on the joy of wine just because you think it is too hard to understand? Over the last 12 years Bruce Heye, The Wine Guy, has made hundreds of beginners feel comfortable with making wine selections. This course explores the basics, including how to read wine labels and distinguish the differences between styles and varieties of wine, and finishes with a visit to a local winery to learn how wine is made. The Art and Science of Pairing Wine with Food

Wonderful World of WineThe New World


The wonderful world of wine is developing rapidly, and this class will explore this growth in North and South America, Africa, South Pacific countries and Asia. Cultural differences, as well as wine types and styles, will be explored through discussions and tastings. Mondays, October 14 - 28 6:30 8:30 p.m. $80

Trotting Tuesdays [Lovell]
This course does not require riding experience and is taught at Cash Lovell Stables inWinston-Salem. The facility has an indoor riding arena where youwill learn the basics of safe and fun English horseback riding. DownsizeStart Now! Its Never too Early! [Hunter]


This class is designed to give baby boomers and older adults information to help them age in place or relocate to a smaller home. We will offer tips and techniques ranging from selecting essentials to organizing papers, documents and photos. Students will learn how to resolve their own downsizing issues and/or how to help a relative or friend who might need to downsize. Principles of organizing will be included. Karate for Adults (Ages 16 and Older) [Geda and Sheaffer]


This course is designed as an introduction to karate and self-defense. You will learn basic moves of traditional Wado-Ryu Karate, as well as self-defense, first kata (series of movements against an invisible opponent) and an introduction to sparring (kumite). You will have the opportunity to earn a yellow belt in Wado-Ryu Karate by the end of the course. Comfortable clothes will be needed. Uniform (gi) is available for purchase, but not required. This course is designed as an introduction to karate and self-defense for women. You will learn basic moves of traditional Wado-Ryu karate as well as self-defense, first kata (series of movements against an invisible opponent) and introduction to sparring (kumite). You will have the opportunity to earn a yellow belt in Wado-Ryu Karate by the end of the course. Our purpose is to share skills and resources, promote excellence in the martial arts and encourage the widest range of women to train in the spirit of building individual and collective strength. Low-Impact Belly Dance Fitness for the Mature Woman [Kendrick]


This course will use basic techniques of Middle Eastern dance to stretch and tone muscles in the whole body, achieve a moderate cardio workout, improve coordination, balance and suppleness, and increase muscle awareness. Movements can be adapted to individual needs. Practitioners of Middle Eastern dance continue to enjoy the benefits of dancing into their 70s and beyond. The joyful feeling of participating in an exercise that also is a form of self-expression can be enjoyed by persons of all ages, sizes and fitness levels. No partner or experience necessary. Old Man WinterOption I: Drawing Winter Landscapes (Teens/Adults)


Have you ever been captivated by a beautiful winter scene and wanted to learn how to draw that beauty on paper? Heres a great class to start building your confidence in drawing, while learning perspective, shading, lifting light areas and basic abstraction. This relaxing but comprehensive drawing class will prepare students for the Painting Winter Landscapes class that follows. Students will develop good drawing skills the best prerequisite to painting. Bring to class: reference pictures of your favorite charming winter scenes, a Bristol drawing tablet (smooth texture), an eraser and one HB drawing pencil. Mondays, September 16 October 21 (no class October 7). 6:00 9:00 p.m. $130

Old Man WinterOption I: Painting Winter Landscapes (Teens/Adults)


Snow scenes can be tricky to paint, but with careful observation and practice you can learn how to paint the rainbow of colors in white snow. The foundation course, Drawing Winter Landscapes, is recommended but not required. A review will be offered in the first painting session, along with homework for all new students and those artists who wish to review drawing basics. Bring several canvas panels, paints (acrylic or water-soluble oils), brushes (including a fan brush), reference pictures, paper towels and a mixing tray. Mondays, October 28 December 2 (no class November 25). 6:00 9:00 p.m. $130

Drawing Bridges and Stone ArchwaysOption I (Teens/Adults)


One of the most rewarding and easy ways to learn perspective is to draw bridges and archways. This is a comprehensive class for the beginner and the serious artist to learn the proper way to draw in perspective. Students will learn the easy way to find vanishing points on the horizon line and the center of an archway by drawing the arch in a box first. Bring to class: drawing pad, pencils, eraser, ultra-fine Sharpie (black or brown) and your favorite bridge and archway reference pictures. Whether you are an avid painter or havent painted in years, you will enjoy this stress-free painting workshop. You are encouraged to bring in photos of family trips and reference pictures to create wonderful works of art. Bring the paint medium of your choice, water-soluble oils or acrylics, canvas panels or watercolor paper, paper towels and brushes. Watercolor, ink and chalk painting are all welcome. Watercoloring Bridges and Stone ArchwaysOption II (Teens/Adults)


Whether an artist is painting an archway of a canal in Venice or a fishing bridge in North Carolina, bridges and archways are interesting subjects to paint in watercolor. Students will learn to paint thin washes with transparent color, to lift color and to add ink for structure. Bring to class: Arches watercolor

Lets Paint a Snowman (Ages 9 and Older)


Young artists will enjoy learning all the steps to paint a snowman with a hat, scarf, pipe and all the colorations of snow. Supplies needed: one canvas panel, size 8x10 or 9x12. Paints and brushes included. Class size is limited Monday, November 4. 3:45 5:45 p.m. $45

Writing for Profit and Getting Published [Mathosian]
This course teaches you how to develop ideas to pitch to editors and identify magazines, newspapers and trade publications for your freelance writing. You will learn how to organize and write articles, successfully query editors, price your work and make multiple sales. Designed for beginners and seasoned writers, this course provides all the information you need to become a successful freelance writer. Write a Novel in a Month [Woodring]


It is possible to draft an entire novel in a month! In this course, students and instructor will participate in National Novel Writing Month (NaNoWriMo) together. We will begin with prewriting and planning sessions, meet throughout the month to encourage each other and write together, and meet once more after our novelwriting month to discuss revising and editing how-tos. Important note: students will need a laptop or other device that they can bring to class to work on novel. Critiques and Commas: How to Edit Your Writing [Roan]


After youve written your masterpiece, the next step is editing. We will cover copyediting (those pesky gerunds and participles) and line editing (characterization, tension, etc.), the grammar rules that we can break and the punctuation conventions we should follow. And well use your manuscripts to learn all this. Registrants should bring seven copies of the first 10-30 pages of their manuscript to the first meeting. Grant Writing Fundamentals [Rodriguez and Palmer]


In light of the current economic recession, many individuals and organizations that are affiliated with the nonprofit sector (i.e., arts-based, community-based or faith-based organizations) are seeking ways to diversify their funding. Grant proposal writing is a useful way to seek out such funds, but there are many people who do not know how or where to start. This course explores the fundamentals of grant writing: how to identify and write a needs statement, articulate smart goals and measurable action steps, draft an informed budget and craft appropriate outcome measures. This is an interactive session where participants will be given time to explore their initial request for proposal ideas. We encourage participants who already have a grant proposal in mind to bring all relevant materials, plus a notebook or laptop, to the session so they can apply their learning in real-time at the workshop. If you are interested in learning more about the nonprofit sector and fundraising, the Martha H. Fleer Center for Adult Education at Salem College offers a Not-for-Profit Management Certificate Program. Monday, October 14 9:00 a.m. 1:00 p.m. $55

Finding the Me in Your Memoir [Vincent]


Learn to tell your unique story in this new workshop filled with can-do writing exercises and an action plan for starting a memoir. Is a memoir the truth and nothing but the truth? Find out what to leave in and what to leave out. Well have fun writing and have plenty of time for questions and sharing. No writing experience is needed. Writing Through Grief [Vincent]


Hope may seem impossible while struggling with the pain of loss. Explore a journey from grief to healing with therapeutic writing in this powerful new workshop. Well look at various ways to understand and work through grief with gentle writing exercises and group sharing in a safe environment. No writing experience required. Extension Service, she has spent more than four years helping people discover the fascinating world of loose-leaf tea. Toronto Donnelly Centre for Cellular and Biomolecular Research, which was selected as one of the best new buildings in the world in 2006. She holds graduate degrees in music from Indiana University and in business from Columbia, with post-graduate work in creative arts education at Rutgers.

Camie Bell received a bachelors degree and


continued graduate work in mathematics at Appalachian State University. She has taught math in the Winston-Salem/Forsyth County School System for more than 23 years.

Lara Kendrick has a masters degree


in curriculum and instruction, 27 years experience as an academic instructor and more than 20 years as a dance instructor. She has traveled extensively in the U.S. and abroad researching, teaching and performing international dances. She currently teaches at various sites in Winston- Salem and is president of World Artists Mosaic, Inc.

Sue Freitag, a mathematics graduate from


Appalachian State University, has continued her graduate studies at UNC Greensboro. For more than 25 years, she has taught mathematics in the Winston-Salem/Forsyth County School System. She has extensive training in MELT (Math Education Leadership Training), is the Math Academic Team Coach, works closely with the Math Club and is a peer tutoringsponsor at RJ Reynolds High School.

Mark Mathosian is a freelance writer,


columnist and photographer. His work has been published in a variety of publications including general readership magazines, business and trade publications and newspapers.

Chris Sheaffer, Sensei, studied Tae Kwon


Do and kick boxing as a young adult before beginning karate when he was 40 years old. Chris earned a second place in Kata (series of movements against an invisible opponent) in his class in the 2004 National AAU Tournament and won grand master in his class in the 2005 Atlanta Cup international tournament. Chris is a child psychologist and has particular interest in using martial arts instruction to help with ADHD symptoms. He holds a Nidan rank (second degree black belt) in Wado Ryu karate.

Kenneth Neher is a marketing, advertising


and sales instructor at Winston-Salem State University. He received a MBA degree from Wharton and has more than 35 years of business experience in large and small companies.

Leslie Kerr, Sensei, has been studying the


martial arts for more than 19 years, earning a black belt in Tae Kwon Do in 1998 and Nidan rank (second degree black belt) in Wado-Ryu. She is very enthusiastic about empowering women to study martial arts to feel more confident and prepared to take on any goal.

Linda Geda, Sensei, has studied karate


for more than 13 years, and is Nidan rank (second degree black belt) in Wado-Ryu karate. She enjoys introducing students of all ages to the wonderful art of karate. She wants to share the tools that have helped empower her to achieve her goals.

Sarah Nelson holds an education degree


from the University of Tennessee. She recently retired from the Winston-Salem/ Forsyth County School System after teaching for 38 years. She has been teaching the SAT Verbal/Critical Reading class at Salem for 13 years.

Jennifer Stevenson Vincent is an awardwinning professional writer and educator with more than 25 years experience. Her work has been published more than 2,000 times in newspapers and magazines across the country, and shes been nominated journalisms highest honor, the Pulitzer Prize. A co-founder and past president/chairman of Winston-Salem Writers, she is also an experienced workshop leader. Vincent is the creator of the Anyone Can Write and Healing Words therapeutic writing programs.

Marlene Kuser holds an MBA from


Fairleigh Dickinson University and has created one-of-a-kind jewelry and taught jewelry design techniques for more than 26 years. She has owned a co-op retail store featuring jewelry and craft classes, as well as successfully organized jewelry and craft shows. Marlene is the past president of The Bead Society of New Jersey and former vice president of public relations for the New Jersey Association of Women Business Owners. She has been guest speaker and demonstrator at the East Coast Earth Science Associations 23rd Annual Gem and Mineral Show.

Stimp Hawkins is a retired Presbyterian


minister and former Hospice chaplain. Currently, he is coordinator of the Salem College service learning curriculum.

Judy Oakley is a graduate of UNCGreensboro and completed graduate work at Cambridge University, Cambridge, England. Having spent 33 years teaching English in the Winston-Salem/Forsyth County Schools, she retired in 2010.She is a consultant with the Department of Education at WinstonSalem State University.She has taught SAT preparation for Salem College for six years.

Bruce Heye, The Wine Guy, has taught


a wide variety of wine classes at Salem College and is a fixture at wine events in the area. After 30 years working in the financial community, Bruce turned his sights on his favorite past time explaining the wonderful world of wine. He holds a masters of business administration from Seton Hall University, and has developed his understanding of wine by judging numerous wine competitions, traveling through most major wine regions in the United States and Europe and meeting with wine experts.

Dana Triplett holds a masters degree in


instructional technology from Appalachian State University and a degree in business administration from Salem College. He is a senior systems analyst for the City of Winston-Salem, teaching employees the how-to of computer software and hardware, and has taught at Davidson Community College. He is an avid technology gadget guru.

Darlene Xiomara Rodriguez, Ph.D.,


MSW, MPA is the director of the Not-forProfit Management and Arts Management programs at Salem College. She also conducts research and consults on matters of interest to the nonprofit sector, including: how to start a nonprofit, governance, capacity building, fundraising and organizational effectiveness.

Parker Lovell runs one of the largest


riding academies in the U.S. The Lovells are third-generation horse people, with scores of world and national champion riders to their credit. coordinator for the Nonprofit Leadership and Management Undergraduate Program at High Point University. She also conducts research and consults on matters of interest to the nonprofit sector, including: how to start a nonprofit, governance, capacity building, fundraising and organizational effectiveness.

in art and a masters degree in architecture. She has 25 years experience in design, management and marketing, and served as executive director for an arts council.
