Set the incline at 1 to 1.5 percent. That slight elevation will increase the intensity (and fatburning potential) of your workout without overloading your leg muscles, says Dowdell. It also shortens your stride, which reduces your risk of injury from overstepping.
Most people let momentum do the work instead of using their legs to propel each step. Set the resistance high enough to feel like youre pushing the ramp down. Its still a lowimpact workout, but youll burn far more calories, says Dowdell.
The legs are the primary movers on the rowing machine, says Dowdell. Initiate the drive with your legs and then pull the handle to your sternum. On the recovery, keep your legs flat until the handle travels past your knees.
During the intense portion of each interval, increase the resistance and stand up as if you were mountain biking uphill, says Dowdell. Youll engage your core and upper body, turning a leg-dominant cardio workout into a totalbody sweat session.

DO THIS Perform the following exercises as a circuit, moving from one to the next with 45 seconds of rest in between. Once youve done them all, rest for 1 to 2 minutes. Repeat thecircuit as many times as you can in 15 minutes. For best results, do this workout barefoot at home.

Get down on all fours with your hips up and your knees bent 90 degrees but only your hands and feet touching the floor. Raise your right arm and left leg until theyre straight and in line with your body. Return to the starting position. Repeat with your left arm and right leg. Thats 1 rep. Do 8 to 10.
Sit with your heels on a bench, your butt on the floor, and your weight supported on your hands. Raise your hips so your body forms a straight line from your shoulders toyour feet. Pause, and then lower your hips back down (but dont let them touch the floor). Thats 1 rep. Do 10 to 12.
Alligator Lunge
Assume a pushup position with your arms straight and your hands slightly beyond shoulder width. Simultaneously move your left hand forward and place your right foot next to your right hand. Lower your hips and pause. Repeat using your right hand and left foot. Continue for 15 to 20 yards.
DeltaFIT Challenge

Assume a crab-walk position with your heels beneath your knees and your palms beneath your shoulders. Lift your hips, raise your right hand and left leg, and try to touch your toes. Return to the starting position. Repeat with your left hand and right leg. Thats 1 rep. Do 10.
Get on all fours with your hips up and your knees bent 90 degrees but only your hands and feet touching the floor. Crawl forward for 5 yards, right for 5 yards, backward for 5 yards, and left for 5 yards to complete a full square. Repeat, reversing the directions (backward, left, forward, right).
HOW TO DO IT Assume a pushup position. Lower your chest toward the oor, but as you do, push your body forward (your hands should end up near your waist). Return to the starting position and continue for 30 seconds, shooting for 10 reps. Thats 1 set. Do 3, resting 60 seconds between sets. Too easy? Elevate your feet, pause at the bottom of each repetition, or lengthen the set and shorten the rest.

Tendinitis
Tendons attach muscle to bone. With tendinitis, that tissue becomes inflamed and sore. The worst nagging pain is felt at night. You can blame wear and tear due to sports, hobbies, or your job, says Theodore Blaine, M.D., chief of shoulder and elbow surgery and a professor of rehabilitation at Yale school of medicine. PREVENT IT Avoid trying to go from slug to stud too fast. If youre looking to get more fit, you should gradually increase your exercise, Dr. Blaine says.
Rheumatoid arthritis
This is an autoimmune disorder in which your body attacks healthy joint tissue. Rheumatoid arthritis tends to affect the small joints in your hands and feet first, says Joanne Jordan, M.D., M.P.H., director of the Thurston Arthritis Research Center at the University of North Carolina. Then other joints, like the shoulders and elbows, start to become painful. PREVENT IT Research from South Korea shows that people who consume the most vitamin D are 24 percent less likely to develop rheumatoid arthritis than those who consume the least D.

Osteoarthritis
The condition can announce itself with swelling, but it usually starts with nagging pain that can progress from minor to severe, Dr. Jordan says. PREVENT IT Warm up before you work out an injury in your 20s can resurface as osteoarthritis pain in your 40s. And stay slim. Otherwise, Dr. Jordan explains, your joints have to work harder to carry your weight, and fat cells promote joint inflammation.
Gout
Excess uric acid in your blood can form crystals around your joints. The result is joint inflammation and pain, most commonly felt in your big toe. The ache manifests as severe, sudden swelling, known as a flare. PREVENT IT Drink less alcohol and lay off heavy animal fats. A diet rich in purines chemicals found commonly in red meat and seafoodcan raise your gout risk, says Dr. Jordan, since your body metabolizes these compounds and makes uric acid.
Bursitis
This is inflammation of your bursafluid-filled pouches that lie next to your tendons. The hallmark symptoms are swelling and pain, and the condition can be caused by either an acute injury or repetitive overuse. PREVENT IT Follow the same rule for preventing tendinitis. And forget the idea of playing through the painif you feel soreness in a shoulder, knee, or elbow, stop. JULIE STEWART

Sorry, Paul. A cold is a star running back: You cannot stop ityou can only hope to contain it. But that shouldnt keep you from making a game plan. Your first line of defense is to hydrate, rest, and nourish. When I feel a sore throat coming on, I gargle with warm saline water, which soothes and acts as an antiseptic. Saline nasal sprays and neti pots (salt packet with distilled water, please) can decrease the congestion in your sinuses and improve breathing. But there is no cure except for time. Also, keep washing your hands. That way, if you do come down with a bug, at least you wont spread the love. IM CONSIDERING A VASECTOMY. IF I REGRET IT, HOW RELIABLE IS REVERSAL SURGERY? Tom, Baltimore, MD In general, reversal offers more than a 50 percent success rate of achieving pregnancy. That said, if you do decide on a reversal, try to have the surgery within 3 years of your snip; the success rate slides once youre 10 years out. My advice is to consider the snip permanent. Thats the proper mindset, because reversal surgery is invasive and expensive.

1 In a large pot, bring 5 quarts of water and the salt to a boil. cook the pasta until just al dente. reserve cup of the water; drain the pasta. 2 meanwhile, in another large pot, cook the sausage on medium high, breaking it up with a wooden spoon, until lightly browned. Transfer the sausage to paper towels. add the kale to the pot and cook until wilted, about 2 minutes. add the beans, drained pasta, and pasta water. Simmer until the pasta is fully cooked, about 2 minutes. 3 remove the pot from the heat, stir in the lemon zest and juice, cheese, parsley, butter, sausage, and olive oil. Makes 6 servings

Lightly crush the tomatoes with your fingers (careful: juice may splatter from inside them) and discard the remaining tomato juice from the can. add the tomatoes to the pan, along with the clam juice, chicken stock, wine, bay leaves, and thyme, and bring to a simmer. Like all live shellfish, mussels should be cooked the same day you buy them. store them in the back of the fridge until ready to cook; then scrub each one with a stiff-bristled brush under cool running water to remove sand and grit. Staying with a big bank will shrink your moving to-do list, since your new hometown is likely to have a branch. That means you wont need to change any direct-deposit arrangements or automatic payments that you had set up from your checking account or bank credit card. Youll save time (simply change your address with customer service) and money, because otherwise you could be hit with account closure fees as high as 30 bucks.

In a medium saucepan over medium heat, cook the butter, stirring often, until it starts to brown, 7 to 10 minutes. Remove it from the heat and immediately pour it into a shallow pan; let it cool. Stir in the bourbon, cover, and let stand overnight at room temperature. The next day, place the pan in the freezer until the butter fat solidifies, about 2 hours. Use a funnel lined with cheesecloth or a coffee filter and strain the liquid back into your bottle. Works wonders with an old fashioned, whiskey sour, manhattan, or egg nog. Makes 10 to 12 cocktails

Unfortunately not. Welcome to the cold world of big business. Unless you had an employment contract, you are known as an at-will employee. That means the company can do what it wantsand that you can be terminated in Texas without cause or notice. The only exception would be if you were able to show that you were fired for an unlawful reason (such as your race). Otherwise, the employer holds all the cards. MY ELDERLY MOTHER IS NEARLY BLIND YET INSISTS ON DRIVING. CAN I HAVE THE STATE TAKE AWAY HER LICENSE?
