ST. MAXIMILIAN KOLBE

No one has greater love than this, to lay down ones life for friends (Jn. 15:13). Never was this passage brought to life more than through the self-sacricing ac ons of St. Maximilian Kolbe. Amidst the overwhelming suering of the Holocaust, Kolbe oered his life so that another man with a familycould live. By enduring his own suering, Kolbe followed in the footsteps of Christ by exemplifying the greatest of all suering and sacrice on behalf A majority of U.S. priests said they dislike the translation of the Roman Missal introduced at Advent 2011, a new survey found. Overall, 59 percent of responding priests said they dislike the new English translation. At the same time, 39 percent of respondents said they liked the text. The survey by the Center of Patristics and Liturgical Studies at St. Johns School of Theology in Collegeville, Minn., also found 80.1 percent of respondents found some of the language in the missal awkward or distracting.

TREASURES FROM OUR TRADITION

In recent weeks, we have reviewed how the Churches of East and West have enriched one another, and this Thursdays solemnity of the Assump on of the Blessed Virgin Mary was born in the Eastern Church. It is a gi from the ancient Church of Jerusalem, a commemora on of the death of Mary, and a feast charged with a deep sense of the Resurrec on. Mary, the rst disciple, is the rst to share fully in Christs victory over death. In the tradi on of the East, today is the Dormi on of the Theotokos, or the Falling Asleep of the God bearer. There is no shadow of death or gloom in the theology, since this is seen as a transforma on of Marys life into a heavenly and immortal existence. There is a sense in the tradi on that she who made earth heavenly and exalted the human race by her faithfulness is gloried today. A persistent legend among Orthodox Chris ans tells how all the disciples, except Thomas, who was preaching in India, were present at Marys death and burial, and sat by the tomb for three days. On the third day, Thomas saw Marys body rising to heaven. She greeted him as my friend, and he was escorted by angels to proclaim her assump on to the others, who then realized her tomb was empty. Hace casi 2000 aos, Jess declar que los zorros tienen guaridas, y las aves del cielo sus nidos; pero el Hijo del hombre no tiene donde reclinar la cabeza. Lamentablemente en las calles y callejones del mundo este dicho se realiza diariamente en tantos abandonados por la sociedad que viven sin techo ni hogar. En los aos 40 el santo jesuita, Alberto Hurtado de Chile quiso darle al Hijo del hombre un lugar donde reclinar su cabeza recogiendo a los nios y a los adultos indigentes. Su ejemplo llam la atencin de otros cristianos que se unieron a sus esfuerzos y as en 1944 fundaron la asociacin benfica Hogar de Cristo. Este hogar se dedica aun todava a acoger, educar y rehabilitar a los necesitados dndoles las herramientas necesarias para poder depender de si mismos. Tambin vela por sus almas dndoles una formacin total de cuerpo, alma y espritu. En fin, el Hogar de Cristo se dedica a difundir la realidad de los pobres por medio de nuestro llamado bautismal a la responsabilidad que tenemos en darle al Hijo de hombre un lugar para reclinar su cabeza.
