Changing of BOP Rams

Purpose: The purpose of this procedure is to outline the steps involved in changing the BOP rams. Procedure: Removal of BOP Rams *Note: BOP door must be securely bolted prior to opening the rams with hydraulic pressure. 1. Open the rams with hydraulic pressure. 2. Bleed hydraulic pressure to 0 psi (0 bar) so that the door will swing easily and to prevent possible damage to the hinge pin O-Ring. 3. Unscrew the door cap screws and open the door by hand. *Note - Do not use the hydraulic system to open the door. This will severely damage the BOP. If the BOP is not flanged to a well head or securely fastened, open only one door at a time. The weight of two doors open can tip the BOP over. 4. The ram is located in the cavity of the BOP door. Slowly apply closing hydraulic pressure until the ram is out of the door cavity. 5. Bleed off the closing hydraulic pressure. *Note: - Care should be taken to avoid turning the ram assembly and allowing it to slide off the ram shaft.

6. Install 5/8 (15.88mm) eye bolt in the top of the ram. 7. Slowly lift the ram to take the weight off the ram shaft and slide the ram horizontally off the ram shaft. 8. After the ram is removed slowly open the ram with hydraulic pressure so the ram shaft is in the cavity of the BOP door. This will prevent the ram shaft from being damaged. * Note - Stay clear when opening pressure is applied to the ram shaft. 9. Clean the rams, and inspect ram rubbers for damage (cracking, gauging, chunking or splitting). Replace rubbers if damaged. Installation of BOP Rams 1. Ensure correct rams are selected and installed properly. 2. Thoroughly grease all ram exterior surfaces and the ram shaft mounting slot. 3. Grease the inside of the BOP body at the following locations: The ram shaft mounting head. The side pads in the body cavity. The skids in the bottom of the body cavity. The ram sealing seat in the top of the body cavity. 4. Apply thread lubricant/never seize to the door cap screws, both on the threads and on the head. 5. Clean and oil the door face and replace the door seal if damaged.
