Through these efforts alone, the company has already successfully secured a doubledigit market share in the key application segment. Mr. Bhanu explained, We are a niche, reliable and technologically advanced player in the Indian market and we operate in a market segment as a major contributor of Indian tractors. Dealers Playing a huge part in the companys marketing is their dealers. The company currently enjoys partnerships with over 100 dealers in India, all of which are strategically located in regions with high market potentials. Mr. Bhanu expressed, We look for business people are our distributor partners, [people] who understand technology and have a true desire to grow with us. SDF also provides their dealers with benefits such as assured longterm business associations, which secures them a viable part in advanced agrimechanization market. Challenges As with any other company, SDF India was not without its own set of growing

Bhanu Sharma

pains when it was first established. Just like any foreign company entering the Indian market, the company had to first deal with dealer viability. Mr. Bhanu explained, The challenges are similar to what any new international player faces. Intensity of challenges may vary. For example, in marketing we had a product range in the upper premium segment of the industry whereas a majority of the Indian market lies below this segment. Overcoming the Problems The first step that the company took to deal with its initial challenges, was to promote their products for what they were: high quality agricultural pieces of equipment. Because of the product range and exemplary services offered by the company, SDF India soon overcame their problems. In fact, SDF Indias shares with the SDF Group continue to grow and they are now emerging as an irreplaceable contributor to the SDF Groups business. New equipment has also been slated for release in the coming years as Mr. Bhanu said, We are surely working on new products and product ranges, which will be announced in due course of time. Competitors Due to their huge presence in the Indian market, SDF India has been faced with strong competition from both local and international companies, each trying to stake a claim in the agricultural equipment market. To edge out the competition, SDF India employs various strategies, all of which are proving to be quite beneficial. The first thing the company did was to start on a rather aggressive marketing strategy that revolves around the expansions of its sales and after sales networks. The network expansion was crucial in widening the companys reach to

other potential clients. The second part of the companys strategy was simply to have faith in the products they offered. DEUTZ-FAHR tractors offer an excellent combination of power, performance, reliability and exceptional value for money and now the new AGROMAXX Series tractor launch is very well addressing the majority customer segment in India, Mr. Bhanu said. Future Plans With an edge over international and local competition as well as a strong two-digit stake in the Indian market, SDF India is now looking to the future. The company has declared that they will now focus on penetrating deep into the domestic market for 2012. When asked about this, Mr. Bhanu said, We have redefined the markets by analyzing markets on HP segments and a new network distribution strategy is in place. Now it will be an alignment of market demands and our product offerings on the same platform. The company has already set itself a fiveyear goal to reach to secure SDF Indias longevity. Mr. Bhanu shared, Our five year business plan is targeted to acquiring a place amongst the top players in the Indian market, not only numbers but also as a significant and technologically advanced reliable tractor player. product. Target Customers, Marketing and Competition KGVK targets smallholder farmers, such as small and marginal farmers, as the main customer base. In such a young market, KGVK enjoys its status as the single largest organized farm equipment manufacturing entity in Eastern India. Mr. Mohit states, We command up to 65% of the market share of the implements in select categories in Jharkhand and Bihar. Even though the company enjoys a large command of the market, competition for KGVK Agro Ltd does exist in the form of local fabricators. However, Mr. Mohit expresses confidence in the superiority of KGVK as he said, In terms of technology and the quality, our products cannot be compared with theirs. While we are involved in continuous research and development based on client feedback, as per my knowledge, very few of the competitors are engaged in research and innovation. Apart from continuous improvements on products, much attention is also paid to marketing their products properly. Demonstration is a big part of the companys marketing strategies. The company sees this through by visits to farmers during planting season so that farmers become aware of advanced and organized agriculture through the products. Mr. Mohit said, Events, demos and workshops are organized on regular intervals. B2B marketing is also a major source in providing our products a better edge over others. Challenges According to Mr. Mohit, The game has just begun. There are a lot of changes to be expected in the Indian agri-equipment industry in the next few years, especially with a projected increase of participation in smallholdings by Indian multinationals. Though this change is good for the survival of the company, there are certainly challenges to be faced by agri-equipment companies. For KGVK, financial bidding is one of them. At many places we are facing difficulty in financial bidding. To ensure quality revolution in farm mechanization, technical capacity should be given preference and more weight. Subsidy for farm equipments should be transferred to the farmers account directly so that they can purchase the equipment of their choice, Mr. Mohit explained. Success One of KGVK Agros missions is to bring change to the farmers life. It is a broad vision, but the company has successfully set goals in place so that they keep working

KGVK Agro
Provides agricultural equipments like weeders. Located in Ranchi, Jharkhand
rishi Gram Vikas Kendra (KGVK) Agro Limited is a provider of high quality agri cultural equipments such as weeders. Previously known as Usha Martin Agro Limited, the company was founded in November 2006. Established as the corporate social responsibility (CSR) sector of the Usha Martin Group and founded in 1972, KGVK Agro Ltd works with farmers and local entrepreneurs in the agricultural sector to ensure that farmers get good quality farming equipment at low costs. Mr. Mohit Kumar is the executive director of KGVK Agro Ltd. Though he started his career in the corporate sector, Mr. Mohit gained the opportunity to work with PRADAN, a non-profit organization. During his 9-year stay at PRADAN, he was able to complete his MBA from Symbiosis, Pune. It was on deputation from PRADAN that Mr. Mohit joined the KGVK. Products KGVK Agro Ltd provides various farming equipments at affordable prices to the farming community and is confident that their products are at the top of the food chain. Users and experts have deemed the companys products to be quite advanced and preferable over several other leading manufacturers. Their most popular product, by far, is the Krishi Usha Weeder. We are the largest supplier of the weeder in Bihar and Jharkhand. Almost 48,000 pieces of the weeder are sold in a season and we have the capacity to manufacture 1,000 weeders in a day, Mr. Mohit said. KGVK attributes the success of their products to a state of the art system. A computer based

CNC machine is used for uniformity and strict adherence of production specification and standards, Mr. Mohit shared. The material we are using is of international standard. All the manufactured components are made to undergo special phosphate based chemical treatments for rust-proofing, anticorrosive treatment and painting. Ensuring Quality The advanced system of production guarantees a long lasting and durable product. However, KGVK takes quality testing to a whole new level in their quest to ensure flawless products. Mr. Mohit detailed, At the time of manufacturing the product, the meticulous use of gauges at different stages ensures that all the components always conform to specifications that are of superior quality. Specially designed fixtures are used to make sure that all the separate pieces of a product stay in place before welding begins. This results in accurate and uniform production of a particular piece of equipment. At this point, demonstrators conduct trials. The quality inspection team of the KGVK certifies final judgment on the quality of each

towards the completion of their mantra. To this date, the company has already successfully accomplished various goals and reached new milestones since its founding. Milestones achieved by KGVK are to be seen more in terms of impact and implication and less by quantitative parameters, Mr. Mohit said. We are a household name in the Eastern Indian states of Jharkhand, Bihar and West Bengal. The agri implements are commercially tested and certified from the best institutions (OUAT, Orissa, FMT&TI, Assam). Additionally, the product line of the company has grown from one, the weeder, to four different product lines and also new initiatives for dairy and medical plants. Perhaps the most notable success of the company can be attributed to the weeders. The company has already reached more than 150,000 different homes with the weeders. This number is far greater than the six weeders sold to one village in 2006. Future Plans Mr. Mohit said that KGVK doesnt just sell equipments but also invests in the farmers capacity to see and build his future. For them, our commitment is whatever it takes. Hence, it only makes sense for the company to further pursue the realization of their goals and mantras for the future. Given the current success of the company and with over 350 villages already under the core area of the KGVKs area of operation, it would seem that the company will be able to accomplish their goals in the foreseeable future. Mr. Mohit said, KGVK Agro Ltd is looking forward to change the world of small and marginal farmers and to make their remarkable contribution felt across the globe. Arjun Agri Industries

Supplies various types of tarpaulins for agriculture related uses. Located in Salem, Tamil Nadu
ocated in Salem, Tamilnadu, Arjun Agri Industries was es tablished in 1989 and has be come a major manufacturer and distributor of various tarpaulins. The company is run by its founder, Mr. R. R. Arjun Mohan, an MBA holder from the Madurai Kamaraj University, who has 22 years of experience in the agricultural equipment industry. Products : Arjun Agri Industries carries various types of tarps to suit the needs of different clients. Some examples of their products include cotton canvas tarpaulins, lightweight polyester and woven cotton tarpaulins, synthetic tarpaulins, HDPE/LDPE tarpaulins. Mr. Arjun said, HDPE tarpaulins are the most popular as they are UV inhibited and are made from pure virgin raw materials. They also have a wide variety of applications. The company imports these world-class tarpaulins, which can be used for fish and prawn pond lining, the making of vermicompost beds and fumigation among other things. Making the Tarpaulins : To ensure that each customer gets the exact tarpaulin needed, the company customizes all of their products. Explaining the raw materials used for the tarpaulin making, Mr. Arjun said, Cotton fabric, which is processed and made waterproof, can be used in transport vehicles. He continued, For synthetic tarpaulins, we have HDPE fabric laminated with LDPE sheets which are used for agricultural purposes. Despite the same raw material being used for all of the tarpaulins the company makes, there are several different ranges and combinations of the raw materials that can be employed according to the needs of the consumer. Tarpaulin Uses : Rather than using coconut leaves for the roof of the poultry

R. R. Arjun Mohan sheds, which will eventually need to be replaced after three years, using tarpaulin will create a dramatic decrease in cost as it is long lasting and weather resistant. Tarpaulin can also facilitate the maintenance of biogas. Mr. Arjun supports the use of biogas saying, I could supply a biogas plant for Rs.7000 which would run for more than 7 years with the dung of two cows. From this you could get full gas for your entire family. Customers : Arjun Agri Industries has identified all farmers and large agriculturists as their target customers. To reach them, the company maintains frequent advertisements in newspapers as well as local channels. However, the company has also looked to exportation to help bring in more revenue. Mr. Arjun shared, People give importance to quality and international buyers are very quality conscious, preferring to buy from companies that are reputable and maintain high quality and service. Today, the company enjoys a high demand of biogas holders and vermicompost beds from international clients. Future Plans : As an agri equipment supplier, the company has certainly had its fair share of hardships. According to Mr. Arjun, frequent power cuts, dollar fluctuations and the shortage of skilled laborers are the companys main challenges at the moment. Despite the challenges faced, however, the company still has high hopes for their future and growth. By 2017, we plan to make this enterprise into a Rs. 500 crores company, Mr. Arjun concluded hopefully. Our Correspondent For more information, contact : Mr. R. R. food processing technology in the country. Quality Control We take a lot of care to offer quality products. There might be people who feel that our products are relatively more expensive than the local brands. For example our pest control equipment range is W.H.O certified and our power sprayers are C.E. certified, Also our company is ISO 9000:2008 certified, maintains Ms. Nonita. She adds, We give equal importance to products and services. We have a team of well experienced, quality control personnel, and engineers who inspect the orders right from the inception to product installations, field work, and customized services. Over the years we have gained excellent repute and respect in our field due to our consistent quality and services to our customers. Our after-sales service is our unique selling proposition. Energy Efficient Dryers With energy getting more expensive, the company has introduced biomass series in its grain dryers. In this equipment instead of using fossil fuel, one can use agricultural waste like husk to run the dryer or even a grain drying centre consisting of series of dryers. Biomass furnace uses no fuel, but uses rice husk, corn cobs, coconut shell, wood chips or coffee hull as thermal provider. Indirect hot air has no tar and will not contaminate grains. First, our rice husk furnace dryer system annually saves energy that corresponds to about 74,000 liter diesel (25 harvesting days for single-cropping a year). Second, it is the most economic way to dry grain. Importance of drying also comes from the aflatoxin that is produced in the grain due to untimely drying. Grain-dryers solves the problems of aflatoxin which is a type of fungus known to cause cancer in humans and animals developed from wet grain, maintains Ms. Sehgl. Future Plans In future the company wants to enter the retail sector. Also we want to establish cooperative drying centers in the country to empower the Indian farmer, says Ms. Sehgl. The company has strong presence in North India, Gujarat, Maharashtra and Karnataka. We plan to target Northeast India because that part of the country has a lot of scope in the field of agriculture, she adds. It faces competition from local manufacturers. Peekay is also planning to launch new products. We plan to enter into the field of exclusive gardening equipment and garden dcor this year, she maintains. Online Training Center The company has an online training centre. Internet usage is increasing in the country. Though farmers have less access to it, a large percentage of our customers are present online. So we decided to offer online training to our consumer and distributors on troubleshooting and other queries. This strengthens our after sale services, maintains Ms. Sehgl. Suggesting changes for the growth of the industry, Ms. Sehgl says, Firstly, reduction of custom duties will help in growth. For example the custom duty on food processing machines is about 30%, which is the highest in the world. It should not be more than 5%. Secondly, establishment of grain drying centers will help to reduce the wastage in crop due to lack of storage facility and untimely rains in the country. If we have cooperative drying centres then the farmers can come and dry their produce at minimal cost and store their produce for a long period of time. Ms. Sehgl has done B.Com

Challenges Faced Speaking about the challenges faced by the company, Ms. Sehgl says, Firstly, it takes time to make the end consumer aware of each product and the benefit they can derive out of them. Secondly, making the product customized to the Indian environment is yet another challenge. Thirdly, we have a wide range of equipment in the field of agriculture and gardening like tillers, fogging machines, misting system, gardening tools, and mini tillers." She further says, The biggest challenge is lack of infrastructure and high custom duties. Hence it is difficult to bring in new

lighting which consumes 75% more power than LED. We have to carry demo kits to prove the brightness of light. But most of the consumers appreciate the quality of our LEDs as we offer 5 years of warranty. Some LEDs are water proof and are used extensively by fisherman community while going to deep sea. He adds, The challenge in rural India is affordability. In some states we have various banking or micro finance tie-up for providing options to purchase products in installments. But, still most of the sales take place on cash down. However, our products are reasonably priced. Products : Duron offers all-in one portable solar photovoltaic (PV) power systems that provide solution for home lighting, mobile charging and a fan. Speaking about the specialty of the product, Mr. Sannoo says, The product is compact, made of poly carbonate rust proof, shock proof, and easy to clean long lasting casing. It has a battery within the casing, and plug & play LED power saving lights, fans and a mobile charger. The accessories along with panel are shipped to the customer in a box, who can assemble them easily. The products are safe to carry with dry batteries. The lights have 5 years warranty and solar panel comes with 10 years warranty. The solar products are charged with solar panels. It has micro controller based system, which cuts off the battery charging once the charge is complete. The battery life is 500 charge discharge cycles. Duron has a tie up with leading battery manufactures where batteries can be purchased by rural customers easily. The charging system is reliable and self-regulating, he maintains. Further speaking about the specialty of the products, he says, Our products are durable due to rust proof, shock proof casing. We provide quality LED lights with 5 years warranty, and solar panels with 10 years warranty. They are also easy to carry and portable in nature. We also provide effective after sales service. He adds, We are unique in our approach and product category. In terms of competition we have mostly unorganized players competing with us. Marketing Strategy : Regarding their marketing strategy, Mr. Sannoo says, We have distributors who are closer to the market. We are also building service points with these distributors. We appoint advisors in rural area, to whom we offer handsome commissions to promote our products and also in turn offer earning opportunity. Products are available with our dealers. We also have tie ups with some leading organizations through whose distribution network the products are distributed. These distribution points are supported by our own company employees. He adds, Our systems are designed to offer complete home lighting solutions and thus have 2-3 LED lights; some are accompanied by torch. Rural consumers have to be upgraded from that concept to solar lantern to home lighting due to which we maintain a demo-based sales process. But once 2-3 lights are installed in a village, we find that consumers demand starts increasing. Future Plans : Mr. Sannoo is upbeat about the future of solar energy products. Solar is the only alternate sources of energy. In India sunlight is available 300 days in a year. Being renewable energy and clean energy, this is the best alternate for our energy needs, he adds. Speaking about their

The company supplies solar energy products. About 403 million households in India are without electricity, with the majority of them in rural India. As 47% of the Indian rural population has either no electricity or partial electricity, they need alternate source of energy. Presently these consumers depend on kerosene lamps for lighting needs. This is harmful for their health and also not a complete solution for lighting the home, says Mr. Vernie Sannoo, vicepresident retail sales. He adds, To cater to the needs of such consumers solar home lighting products were launched. With this children are able to study, small shops can operate for longer time, and cooking can be done in a safer environment. This contributes to increased income, upgraded life and it contributes to overall wellbeing of people. Petkus India

Manufactures mechanical seed sorting equipment. Headquartered in Gurgaon, Haryana

cessing Mixed feed processing Pre-mix plants Challenges : Speaking about the challenges faced by the company, Mr. Rajput says, The challenge faced by the company at the moment is the lack of awareness of quality products. Many a times people land up comparing high end technology with the one which is outdated or cheap copies of the original machines. One of the biggest challenges that we face is to educate the users about the high end machines and the way the technology pays in the long run. Product Specialty : Mr. Rajput maintains that the company updated its entire range of machines in 2009. We are using latest technology. We have high precision pre-cleaners, graders, gravity separators, seed treaters and other ancillary equipment to build modern seed processing plant. Our range of equipment is reliable, rigid, durable and user friendly. German engineering makes our product unique, he maintains, adding, All quality parameters are as per the guidelines of European standards. When asked about the most popular products from the Petkus India stable, Mr. Rajput says, For grain we have high capacity pre-cleaners which can handle up to 150 tons per hour. Add to it the handling equipment of the similar / higher capacity. Grain dryers with silo storage system forms part of all industry catered by Petkus. For seeds we have seed treaters (batch type/ continuous type) as one of the prime products. Similarly with feed and flour we have some distinct equipments to offer. Market Presence : At present Petkus has the strongest presence in Andhra Pradesh in the seeds industry. Other states where we have our presence are Tamil Nadu, West Bengal, Maharashtra, and Uttar Pradesh. Some individual machines are present in the other agricultural states, maintains Mr. Rajput. The India unit does not export as yet. But we have customers outside India who are serviced by the Indian team. At present we

Further speaking about competition, Mr. Rajput says, Our competitors are Cimbria, Buhler, and Fowler Westrup to name a few. Grain Storage in India : Commenting on reports that food worth US$ 12 billion which can feed 80 million people for an entire year is being wasted in India every year due to poor grain storage facilities, Mr. Rajput says, Sometimes back it was the Government/ FCI who took decision to create state of the art grain storage facility for India. At that time about 2 lac ton storage was created in North India with additional storages in different parts of the country. That was a good beginning. With a little more focus on grain storage the government can bring about a vast change to what the world thinks about our grain management skills. He adds, The agricultural industry as such is facing a big problem as compared to the other industries. It is the unpredictable nature of the climate, the policy changes of the government that makes or breaks this industry. If the crop is good but the industry is not allowed to export, the surplus rots on the street. Speaking about the achievements of Petkus, Mr. Rajput says, We have to build the seeds industry so that good seeds are produced by the seeds companies with good seed treatment techniques. This will in turn bring good produce for the farmers. When the crop is in abundance then we have the processing and storage techniques for the industry and ultimately the whole industry benefits. They help in reducing manpower requirement and fast egg collection, says Mr. Surinder Gadoo, managing director. One of the most popular products of Lubing in

Offers drinking, conveyor and climate control system for livestock. Headquartered in Pune, Maharashtra
also used for increasing humidity if required and for disinfecting the poultry houses. The climate system creates very fine mist as water is pumped through misting nozzles at 70 bar pressure. The fine mist cools the atmosphere and hence reduces the temperature. The only problem we sometime face is bad quality of water at farms, says Mr. Gadoo. Drinking Systems Regarding the speciality of drinking systems for birds, Mr. Gadoo says, These, once installed, do not need replacement for years, thus saving lot of cost for poultry owners over the years unlike the other locally made systems. Customer Satisfaction Mr. Gadoo maintains all the product lines offered are customized as per the requirement of each farmer. As the farm layout and poultry sheds sizes change at the farm, the products offered are customized, he says, adding, As we have service engineers at local level, in case of any problem, our engineers are at the site in no time. The company also provides onsite training for using these poultry systems to their customers. To reach to the remotest parts of India we have 7 sales offices in different states with around 20 sales people who make farmers understand our system in local language before they take a buy call, says Mr. Gadoo. Competition Mr. Gadoo maintains that they face competition mainly from international companies. Our products are superior in quality as they are manufactured in Germany under stringent quality control. Secondly, Lubing is a world leader in all the systems we deal in. Lubing, Germany was established in 1949. So we have a vast experience behind us, he says. Further speaking about new innovations, Mr. Gadoo says, Recently we have introduced new nipple called combi matter and twin clean line. Both the products were in-

Surinder Gadoo troduced after feedback from farmers across the globe. Challenges Faced The main challenge faced by the company was convincing the poultry farmers to use automated poultry applications and systems. Mr. Gadoo says, The challenge we always face is price comparison with cheap manufacturers. He further adds, The toughest part was the period when bird flu was declared in India for the first time. The times were tougher for farmers but still we asked our sales people to be in touch with our customers. Future Plans The company plans to popularize the use of conveyor system and fast introduction of innovation done in Germany in future. We feel that now India is ready for automations at all levels, adds Mr. Gadoo. Mr. Gadoo is a computer graduate and an MBA in finance. There are around 75 people working in the company. At production and installation level, we hire engineers. At sales level, we hire people with relevant qualification, he informs. Suggesting changes for the growth of the industry, Mr. Gadoo says, As such there is no government support for export of poultry products. An increase in export will help the industry to grow faster. Government should encourage farmers for further processing of poultry product and the same should be exported. We should learn from Brazil. Egg Conveyor System Egg conveyor systems eliminate intensive labor, automating the process of egg collection. Speaking about the benefits of egg conveyor system, Mr. Gadoo says, As average farm size is increasing in India, the egg conveyor has become a necessity as it not only saves labor, but also time. The eggs are collected at egg go-down and these can be easily distributed from there. He informs, We are currently working with Radha Sakku group for 3 million bird project in Orissa. The equipment has been tested successfully worldwide for last many years. Lemken India Agro Equipment

Manufactures machinery for soil cultivation, sowing and plant protection. Headquartered in Nagpur, Maharashtra

Arvind Kumar

emken India Agro Equipment Pvt. Ltd. is a 100% subsidiary of Lemken Gmbh, Germany, in corporated in 2010. It entered the Indian market in 1999 through joint venture with one of the Indian partners. In 2009 Lemken established its first in-house production plant in India. The company manufactures machinery for soil cultivation, sowing and plant protection. Lemken India is headquartered in Nagpur, Maharashtra. Lemken Gmbh & Co. KG. have been in business since last 230 years. The company is a leader in Europe in agro equipments. The company specializes in pre-harvesting agro equipments which are made of the latest technology, maintains Mr. Arvind Kumar, CEO and MD. Product Specialty : Speaking about the specialty of the products offered by Lemken, Mr. Arvind says, Some of the benefits include high precision in tillage, easy adjustments of implements for better results, suitability to various land conditions, long implement life, low maintenance costs, and more work in less time. All these contribute to the successful harvest of our customers crop and helping him increase his income. Lemken also offers customized products. Customization can be made possible based on tractor size, soil conditions, implement design, the crop to be cultivated, technological requirements and precision of cultivation, all contributing to the successful harvest for the farmer. It usually takes 2-12 weeks depending on the level of customization required, says Mr. Arvind. The hydraulic reversible ploughs introduced by Lemken in the Indian market is a popular product in that segment. When Indian farmers think about purchasing hydraulic

reversible plough the first choice is Lemken, he maintains. The mould board plough offered by Lemken is used to uproot the residues and turn the soil which results to increase the porosity level in the field for better retention of water. Lemken ploughs have been successful with all Indian crops, says Mr. Arvind. Market Share : When asked about their market share, Mr. Arvind says, Lemken started its operations in India by marketing its products in Maharashtra and north Karnataka. Technologically wise Lemken does not have any competitor in India. The market segments for our ploughs are different than the Indian manufacturers. We are in the process of expanding our network in all over India as well as for export. Production and Marketing Challenges : Mr. Arvind says, The main challenges faced by the company are availability of the raw material; skilled labour; and selling technology to Indian farmers as the initial cost of acquiring is expensive though ownership cost is much more beneficial. He adds, The Indian farmers are not well aware about the technological products available worldwide. They only depend on the local manufacturers in their area, which results in high maintenance cost and more fuel consumption rather than the advanced technological products. So we think Lemken can bring the evolution in the agriculture fields by providing the latest technological products to the farmers for better yield production. The total strength of Lemken India is 20. Our employee is expected to grow to 55 in coming months, says Mr. Arvind. Challenges Faced by Farming Community : Speaking about the chal-

lenges faced by the farming community India, Mr. Arvind points out, The agriculture industry faces a lot of challenges, which stifle its growth in matters from seed, water, labour and finance sourcing to post harvest crop storage and consistent crop procurement prices. Every step contributes to the escalating issue of the farmer not being able to earn to his and the farms full potential. He adds, The agriculture implement sector is unorganized which needs to be organized. There are so many local players in India which are not in the record yet. If anybody is having 2-3 machines he started his own production without any technology involvement. So we think farmers need to change their perceptions about the local manufacturers and should go for the technological products as the farmers are using in other countries. Thats the reason why the yield/ hectare of other countries is better than India. Quality Assurance : Assuring superior quality products, Mr. Arvind maintains, Lemken implements goes through rigorous quality checks starting from the raw material used, processes involved in manufacture and final calibration of the implement for best results. He adds, Quality being a major driver of our entire business operation, we ensure that we conform to highest standards of international quality in all our product offerings. We ensure the quality of the products by using advanced technological machineries in our production process. Careful and strict quality control, throughout from the grassroots level (raw material) to finished machines, to ensure technically perfect machines for the end user. We use the special steel with heat treatment and hardened, which is exclusively developed for Lemken and this result in a particularly high wear resistance of our components, so that you wont have to replace them so often as other local parts. Lemken parts have extraordinary fitting accuracy and simple, efficient and safe installation. He further adds, Lemken products focus on increasing the farmers income by providing technologically-advanced products that reduce the farmers cultivation time and labour expenses compared to other Indian manufactured ploughs. Emu Farming

Is Emu Farming a real business or a scam?

A recent article titled Investment scam: Cases of circular trading of Aussie bird emus rising in Tamil Nadu published in ET, has equated emu farming to ponzi schemes. We talked with members of Agricultureinformation.com website to find out more about their feedback on emu farming. Here is a detailed report!

The Report
n Tamil Nadu, a highly literate and industrialised state with a propensity to fall for ponzi schemes, one more investment scam seems to be brew ing. This time it centres around the emu, a large, flightless bird native to Australia and reputed to have as many uses as the wonder drug aspirin. Across the southern state, indications are that there is a steady build-up of what is essentially circular trading of emus, something that is usually a precursor to an eventual collapse. Advertisements on television, Internet and pamphlets are touting the bird as the ultimate in investment. Across Tamil Nadu indications are that there is a steady build-up of what is essentially circular trading of emus, something that is usually a precursor to an eventual collapse. Advertisements on television, internet and pamphlets are touting the bird as the ultimate in investment. Among those who fell for the spiel is Arjun, a 30-year-old software engineer from Chennai who bought 10 pairs of chicks investing Rs 2 lakh. He got his money back in two years, but now says there is something fishy about the whole scheme. If everyone is selling the bird not to the end consumer but to people who are getting into farming, it doesnt sound good, he says. Investment schemes for emus look remarkably similar to the ponzi rackets that have operated in the past. For an initial investment of, say, Rs 2 lakh for 20 pairs of chicks, an investor is promised total income of Rs 6.5 lakh in five years-essentially a triple your-money scheme. All an inve stor is sup-

posed to do is return the 20 pairs to the company promoting the scheme every year and take a new set. Emu farming is supposed to have debuted in India in the mid-1990s after emu slaugh-

Gujarat. It is in the past two years that the hype has grown. A farm owner near the hill station of Kodaikanal boasted that he has sold over 1.5 lakh emus so far. No order below 25 pairs of chicks is worth his while and payment has to be upfront.

Emu Farming, a profitable business

With promised returns from emu farming, more and more people are joining the fray. We talk with emu farmers in India to find out whether emu farming is a proven profitable business opportunity.
tering was banned in its home in Australia. Now, those in the business say there are 3,000 farms in the country, largely in Tamil Nadu, Punjab, Maharashtra, Kerala and

Doubts over Mkts Existence

mong those contributing to the buzz is Susi Emu Farms in Perundurai, near Erode, which calls itself one of the largest emu farms in India. Its sales pitch is that it fulfills dreams of people who are in search of projects providing quick profits on investments in this competitive world. For Senthil, who relishes quick profits, emus are just what he was looking for. Recently, he paid Rs 1.2 lakh for five pairs of chicks from a farm just outside Chennai. In two years, he believes, each emu will be worth Rs 45,000. Emus can grow to be as tall as humans and weigh up to 60 kg. Related to ostriches, they can live for 40 years and are fertile for half that period. Those peddling emus say it is a golden goose-its meat, eggs, feathers, toenails, skin and even oil are all valuable. While software engineers and farmers alike are being lured to emu schemes, they are not asking if there is a real market for emu products. Such concerns have arisen once in a while but formal complaints have not been made. VK Shanmugam, the collector of Erode district, says the emu business is a matter of serious concern but since there are no complaints, no action can be taken. Shanmugam says he is also intrigued by the fact that he doesnt see any of the birds though people seem to be investing in them.

I hear that people are depositing money but are not able to get receipts for that, he says. The administration recently had a meeting with top police officials about the emu problem. Tamil Nadu has a rich history of ponzi schemes. Among the more notable ones is the collapse in 1998 of the Anubhav group which duped investors who put money in a teak plantation scheme of around Rs 400 crore. Last year, a PTI report said the Maharashtra government ordered a CID inquiry into a likely Rs 200crore emu farming scam in Nashik district. The controversial scheme, run by a private company, involved a promise to triple investment in 45 days. Farm owners in Tamil Nadu estimate the number of emus in the state at around five lakh, or one bird for every 130 people in Tamil Nadu. Sceptics such as Shanmugam, however, dont buy that number. V Rajapandi, the general secretary of the Tamil Nadu Emu Association, said to be registered under the Societies Act and having 300 members, defends his business. He says emu farming is a genuine business if you do it in the right manner. It has a huge market. Just because a handful of people say so, you cannot say the business is a ponzi scheme, he adds. Mr. Vidyasankar. N of Abhivirthi Emu Firm says, The information in the article is totally vague. It deals with outlook of an individual and not on economic prospects of the industry. Why dont the one person who published the details discuss the real economic importance and the value hidden in the industry. Why no information was procured from the experts in the industry who were appointed by the government to guide the people. Mr. Aarvind Shetty of ARK Farms says, We had started emu farming 5 years back with 30 emu chicks. Though I recovered my investment over the years by selling emu eggs and chicks, I am still searching for the real market for emu i.e. meat, feathers,

aryana Emu Farms is based in Jagadhri, Haryana. The company was set up by Mr. Inder Pal Singh. He did a lot of research on emu farming by visiting various farms in different areas. They also went through the required training for choosing and rearing the genetically strong emu birds. There are 7 people working in the company, who were trained in-house. The client base of the company comprises poultry farmers. To reach the desired set of customers, we try to participate in events and exhibitions. We have our own website, where anyone can reach out to us and put in their enquiries. We reply to them by telephonically or by sending related e-mails, says Mr. Singh. The company is mainly targeting emu chicks, emu birds, emu meat and emu eggs. There is a huge demand for emu chicks in the Inder Pal Singh north. The company is focusing on emu meat market and we are very confident about the same in the region as the demand for red meat is huge up here, says Mr. Singh. He maintains that though emu is disease resistant, it requires care and effective sanitization. Water is not a big problem in our region. We get 24 hours water supply from the bore well. To store the water, we have special arrangements of plastic tanks in our farm and we do sanitize the same by adding chlorine or bleaching powder in it, informs Mr. Singh. In future the company is targeting the Indian Army where a lot of red meat is consumed daily. We believe, if only defense forces start consuming emu meat, it will be a huge success for emu industry. This would be even better for the defense to start emu meat for its great properties: 98% fat free, and enriched with high protein red meat. As soon as the big numbers of emu birds are being slaughtered for meat purpose, then we will think of marketing emu oil, says Mr. Singh. Mr. Singh is a commerce graduate from Kurukshetra University and has been into sales and marketing since 1998. His family has been into poultry farming for three generations. skin, and oil. People in AP are putting their hope on processing of emu meat but the market in India for emu meat is not large. People who were earlier into emu farming made money through selling of chicks to farmers who wanted to start emu farm. It went on like a networking business. But the real question in every emu farmers mind is, Where is the market? Where do I sell it? I would like government to intervene and help emu farmers find the market in India/abroad by exports and protect many marginal emu farmers who have invested lakhs of rupees

into it. Member Bharat says, Business such as poultry, dairy, goat raring often suffer due to various reason such as spread of infectious and contagious diseases which results in sudden fall in production. Emu is normally safe from all these adversities; hence Emu farming is recommended all over the world these days. In the first place this is a very fast growing business in the USA and now in India with a very high percentage of profit on investment. Emu can live in any kind of environment and adversities. This is a non-aggres-

try division which has a research farm of government of Andhra Pradesh, informs Mr. Reddy. Target Customers The company mainly targets meat customers like restaurants, caterers, and metro Cash and Carry Hyderabad, India. The products most in demand are emu meat and emu oil. Presently we are selling around 200 kgs emu meat daily under the brand name Golden EMU in Andhra Pradesh and nearly 1200 liters of emu oil every month in Bangalore. We are having our own brand under the name of Golden EMU Oil. We sell pure EMU oil in 50 ml. bottles. We are selling the oil through local rural medical practitioners (R.M.P) in Andhra Pradesh, says Mr. Reddy. Maintenance of Birds The major challenges faced by the company is chicks production and survivability; reducing the feed cost; and marketing of meat and oil. Though emus are disease resistant, they soft and smooth, hence it has a great demand in international leather industry for producing new fashionable goods. A variety of goods can be produced from emu-skin. Emu farming is fast growing because of its uses. And it also gives good profit for the business. Emu farming is a big venture with a huge growth potential. need a lot of care when they are chicks. Sanitization is recommended in only the farms who are maintaining the hatchery units within the farm to prevent the diseases carrying from outside and to secure the delicate chicks from day old to about 2 months age from diseases, says Mr. Reddy. The company maintains 200 birds in every pen. For these birds we need about 600 to 800 liters of water. We have constructed a mini ground level water tank of 1000 liters capacity in each pen. We have put a water purifier at the bore well itself to purify the water, says Mr. Reddy. Beware of these types of the people. Always check the education and experience of your service provider. olden Emu Farms was set up in 1998. It is based in Kuknoorpally village in Medak district, Andhra Pradesh and has its head office in Hyderabad. The company was founded by Mr. Nakkala Laxma Reddy, Mr. Bommena Bhoopathi Rao, Mr. Md. Muzaffar Ali, and Mr. Md. Usman. The annual turnover of the company was Rs. 3 crores. The main problem faced by the company was finding veterinary doctors specializing in emus. The main issue at that time was leg bending in emus, says Mr. Reddy, managing director. There are 40 employees working in the company. We trained some of our staff at ANGR Agricultural University of Hyderabad poul-

sive bird so it is easy to look after. The birds do not need special structures for their stay neither do they need large chunk of land. In one acre of area 100 to 150 emu can be quickly covered. Its an ecofriendly and highly effective business. Mr. Nakkala Laxma Reddy, managing director, Golden Emu Farms, Hyderabad, says, Due to growing awareness about the benefits of eating emu meat, which is healthy, its demand is increasing. Also, with the increasing acceptability of alternate medicine, emu oil (removed from the fat deposited below the surface of the skin) containing the pain-relieving oleic acid, and believed to be good for arthritis, has huge commercial potential. Emus can grow to be as tall as humans and weigh up to 60 kg. Related to ostriches, they can live for 40 years and are fertile for half that period. of making a quick buck, investing life savings or borrowing money to start a business. But the first signs of a bubble burst were evident at a grievance redressal meeting held in the city on Friday, when farmers complained they were suffering losses and were being cheated. Mr. Prjapat quotes another article titled Senior cop advices caution against investing in emu business. The article says, Police have warned the public not to be taken in by advertisements that make tall claims regarding emu farming in the region. Investors should be cautious before entering into emu rearing business. They should not be misguided by advertisement campaign, said Asra Garg, superintendent of police, Tirupur, on Tuesday. MU India Agro Pvt Ltd was established in 2007 in Mumbai. Mr. K. Suresh Kumar is the managing director of the company. The company started with 25 pairs of emu birds in 1 farm. Right now it has grown into 12 hatchery centres with production of more than 40000 chicks per year with more than 100 farmers. Speaking about pros and cos of emu farming, Mr. Suresh says, This is a new business with good profit and export opportunity. The disadvantage is the awareness of emu farming and emu products in India which helps some bogus companies give bogus promises to the farmers with extraordinary profit which is impossible in any business. We request farmers to check the background, marketing capacity, and genuineness of the company in which they are investing. Emu Indias target customers are farmers who are interested in emu farming. We already help hundreds of farmers to setup emu farm in different states of India. We have opened our branch in 8 states to give all services regarding emu farming to these farmers, says Mr. Suresh. Apart from rearing emu birds, the company

r. Reddy of Golden Emu Farms how ever says, Those interested in investing in livestock farming are choosing emu farming as the best option because it does not require infrastructure like sheds and all. Just plain land with fencing is enough. Businesses such as poultry, dairy, sheep or goat rearing or animal husbandry often suffer due to various factors such as eruption and spread of infectious and contagious diseases, resulting in sudden fall in production, climatic charges, excessive heat and scarcity of water. Emu is naturally immune to all these adversities hence emu farming is preferred all over the world today. Emu farming as a supplement to agriculture is going to be the most profitable business in the near future. Emu is a sober bird, living on grains, cereals, pulses and grass, its immune system is so strong that it hardly suffers from any disease. It survives in any type of climate. Each and every part of emus body is commercially valuable. Hence in India, emu farming is taking its roots. r. Prajapat also says. In agriculture there is no guarantee of profit. Anything can happen. Before going for any new venture one must research well and hire a consultant. The role of consultant should not be that of a deci-

sion maker. His role must be of an information provider. Never hand over the task to him. Always complete the task yourself. One can follow the following process before going into any agriculture venture: 1. Can you dedicate you time to the venture as desired. 2. First study the detail about the cultivation or farming process. Find if there is any difference between the natural habitat and your proposed condition. 3. Then study the uses of the particular commodity and find out if such type of the industry, product in available freely in the market. 4. Try to find out if from where they source the material what are their requirement. Can you produce as per their quality specification?

We have introduced 6 emu oil products: pure emu oil, medicated emu oil, emu oil soap, emu oil cream, emu oil shampoo, and emu hair oil with FDA approval, in the local market, says Mr. Suresh. Suggesting people considering emu farming, Mr. Suresh says, We request all farmers to buy emu birds from companies having their own licensed slaughter house and a sound financial background. We are also requesting farmers not to invest money in any investment scheme in emu farming, rather the farmers should themselves set up their own emu farms and sell the emu birds to the companies having slaughter setup. We sell emu birds to the farmers, give free training with complete consultancy and buy back the birds from them. We are ready to help farmers in advanced technology to start their own slaughter house and market their product. Our Correspondent For more information, contact : Mr. K. Investment and Returns on Emu Farm
Another member Harish wants to know if it is a good idea to start emu farming with 50 birds. He also wants to know the investment required for 50 birds farm and the profits to be expected in future. Mr. Singh replies, The number of pairs has to be decided on the total investment you want to do in this very business. As you have to feed your birds from day one and the return on your investment will come as soon as the birds will start laying eggs. So be careful about the numbers, as there are many other expenses, too, like feed, medicines, and labor. He explains, Investment on 25 pairs depend on what age of birds you are opting to start with like 3 month old pair will cost you anywhere between Rs.7000-8000 and older birds will cost you somewhere around Rs.18000-24000 per pair. In first laying an emu can lay about 10 eggs, in second laying 15-20 eggs, and third laying onward 25-35 eggs. Total return on your investment depends on the price of the eggs sold less feeding and other expenses.

Suresh Kumar, MD, Emu India Agro Pvt Ltd reiterates, Emu farming is a real business same like poultry. It is a genuine business for which NABARD gives subsidy and many government banks are funding these projects and also the birds are insured by the government insurance company.

Government Intervention

r. Prajapat further says, We cant ex pect everything from the government. It makes rules/regulation after the problem becomes severe. It is the investor or farmer who has to decide his action. Government encourages every new venture by providing subsidy. If emu farming is real business we need not worry. These financial frauds are part of the growth and development. Some unsocial agents come and create the problem. The government must ask the bank to give the feedback about the investment in emu farming, and then put the scheme in more systematic way. If there is opportunity in the export of emu products then that must be explored. None of the agriculture business is loss making if you are running it in a systematic way, then it will give you return. NABARD should also take feedback from their beneficiary regarding the success ratio of emu farming. Government must take the leading role. If it is loss making, put the immediate ban. The farmer has to take decision at their level. They have to think where they are investing the money. Mr. Reddy reiterates, Emu farming is a growing industry. Government has to promote emu farming, R&D should be done to develop a breed of emu birds in India. Agri universities should include emu birds in veterinary studies. There should be a dedicated slaughter house for emu birds. Training should be made available for emu farmers and emu hatcheries, machinery to extract oil out of emu fat should be subsidized, and best quality emu feed should be made available. Government has to encourage the emu farmers by providing interest free loans on emu farming, and subsidies on emu feed ingredients and electricity.

Haryana Emu Farm

r. Inder Pal Singh joined the emu farm ing industry with his venture Haryana Emu Farm, a new addition to his family business of poultry farming. Haryana Emu Farm is based in Mukarbpur village in Yamuna Nagar District, Haryana. Before setting up the farm, Mr. Singh visited emu farms in Vijayawada, Andhra Pradesh to learn about emu farming. He also underwent required training for choosing and rearing genetically strong emu birds. The company supplies emu chicks, emu birds, emu meat and emu eggs. It mainly targets poultry farmers and consumers of red meat. There is a huge demand for emu chicks in northern India. Most buyers buy from us to rear emu for breeding purpose only. We are also focusing on emu meat market, says Mr. Singh. There are seven employees working on the farm. The company trains its staff in-house. The company participates in agri fairs and events held by sugar mills, co-op banks, agricultural universities or veterinary doctors meets, to promote emu farming.

Agritalk - Emu Farming Facts on Emu Farming

Answering a junior members query, senior member Ashwini states the example of a model emu farm: Investments Buying 10 pairs of 3 months old emu birds Cost Rs. 2,00,000(INR) Cost of Fencing Rs. 70,000 (one time) Feed cost per year for 10 pairs of emu birds Rs.90,000 Income Emu birds start laying eggs after 18 months First time 10 pairs of emu will give 100 egss Second time 10 pairs of emu brids will give 200 eggs third time 10 pairs of emu brids will give 300 eggs + plus Emu bird lays eggs only between October to March every year. As per this model project the total investment is Rs.3,60,00 INR (one time investment). Income from this model project will be Rs 3.00,000 INR for every year (todays market value per egg is Rs.1000 so (300 eggs X Rs.1000 = Rs.3,00,000 INR ). This income will continue for 30 years as emu will lay eggs for more than 30 years.
The initial problem faced by Mr. Singh was getting the special emu feed for the different age group, to get the desired medical help from the local vets and marketing the emu eggs. Marketing of emu product such as eggs and meat are the main challenges for new farmers as there is no ready market in India. I always advice people to study the business and its market first then ask them to step into this business, he says. He recommends several measures to the government to promote emu farming, R&D should be done to develop a breed of emu birds in India, agri universities should include emu birds in veterinary studies, there should be a dedicated slaughter house for emu birds, training should be made available for emu farmers and emu hatcheries, machinery to extract oil out of emu fat should be subsidized, and best quality emu feed should be made available. Mr. Singh recommends emu farming as emu birds are highly disease resistant. Also emu meat is 98% fat free. Speaking about the companys future plans, Mr. Singh says, There would be huge demand for emu breeders and emu meat in coming years and for that, we have to increase our production to meet the demand. In future we plan to set up a mini slaughter house for domestic meat supply and thereafter establish an international standard slaughter house equipped with latest cutting and packaging machines for export purposes. In future, the company also plans to extract and sell emu oil, which has healing and moisturizing properties and can be used to manufacture skin products. Speaking about competition, Mr. Singh says, Competition has always been healthy for any business, I always encourage my competitors as we want emu Industry to grow with time. We need to educate and train prospective farmers first, then supply them healthy birds feed, and last but not the least buy back their eggs to help their business grow. Mr. Singh is a commerce graduate and has been in the field of sales and marketing since 1998.

Benefits of Emu Farming

ember Dgawale wants to start live stock management and is considering emu farming as a secondary option. He asks about the pros and cons of emu farming. He expresses his concern, Even if everything is ok with emu farming the main concern about this is the market. Where do we sell our emu birds, meat, feathers and other byproducts because in India people are not yet aware of emu. Also how can we capture the international market for it. Mr. Singh replies, Emu farming is basically divided into two types: First it is to source eggs from a breeding farm, and the second is to raise emu for various products/ meat market. The best and easy way is to go with the first option, where you keep quality emu birds at your farm, take very good care of them and get quality fertile eggs. Sell these eggs to the local hatchery. Generally your emu birds suppliers will buyback those eggs. You will get good profit by selling those eggs, as good fertile eggs can be easily sold for anywhere between Rs.1000-1500. Else you can always start selling emu chicks by putting up an in-house

emu hatchery too. These days there is huge demand for emu chicks in various states. So before purchasing the birds always ask your supplier about the buyback agreement of eggs or check with the local hatcheries, if they are having demand for the same. The second option is also good, but it really depends whether you have any emu slaughter house nearby or not, as they will buy your live bird ageing about 12-18 months and weighing more than 35Kg. As I have heard, they pay something ranging between Rs.250-300 per kg of your livestock. So far as the other emu byproducts are concerned, only a slaughter house can sell them as they have the required quantity of each product like feather, leather and nails.

Financial Assistance
nother member Eswar Reddy is inter ested in starting an emu farm with 50 pairs of 3 months old emu chicks. He wants to know, How much investment is required until the first laying including other expenses like hatchery machine, farm development cost, fencing and room generator, where we can sell emu chicks or eggs. Is emu farming going to be a profitable business in future? Would any bank provide loan as well as subsidiary for emu farming this financial year 2012-2013 I discussed with NABARD district employees and was told that now no subsidiary is available. Mr. Singh replies, Investment in emu farming depends on the total number of pairs you bought, feeding cost till laying starts, labor and other expenses. Price of 3 month & Industry Survey

Abhivirthi Emu Firm

bhivirthi Emu Firm is located in Dindigul district, Tamil Nadu. Mr. Vidyasankar N is the proprietor of the company. I was working as senior engineer in an MNC abroad. I was caught amidst the global crisis in between 2007 2009. One of my friends who had a farm abroad guided me through profit and loss in emu business, informs Mr. Vidyasankar. Speaking about the initial research done before setting up the company, Mr. Vidyasankar says, Lots of groundwork had to be done. I got the books regarding emu farming and memorized all the facts and visited a number of farms all over India and met higher officials in NABARD and then prepared a project report with the help of an auditor and the officials. I got a loan from the bank for this project. It took me eight months to start my business. Now I am doing this full time. The company sells emu meat and emu oil. Emu is highly disease resistant but Mr. Vidyasankar warns, All living organisms are susceptible to some kind of disease. Emu is no exception. Cleanliness and inadequate care towards the birds make them ill. The major challenges faced by the company included lack of qualified veterinary doctors specializing in emu, and lack of government support to spread awareness about emu meat. He suggests people considering taking up emu farming to research well. Do not invest unless you are confident you can sustain for three years without any income from emu, he warns. Mr. Vidyasankar has done master of science in civil engineering and bachelor of engineering in computer science. old emu chicks could be anywhere between Rs. 7000 10,000 per pair. Feeding cost till they start laying will be about Rs.8000 per pair. Hatchery machines come with different capacity ranging from 180 eggs to 2400 eggs and the cost of the same is ranging between Rs.60 000 6,00,000. Generator of 7.5 to 15 KVA is required for power back up. You need to make your own space in the emu market in your respective state. There are so many banks here in our state who are lending for emu farming and of course NABARD is providing subsidy of 25%33% on the same.

Preventing Diseases
nother member skvengali asks about the possibility of loss and asks about the precautions to be taken. Senior member Ashwini replies, The only problem you might face is the lack of space since 5 pairs of emus need at least 3000 square feet of area as they have a tendency to kick their feet and get aggressive with the other birds. The other factor you need to take care is the birds should not get affected by any pest or diseases. Mr. Vidyasankar of Abhivirthi Emu Firm suggests methods to prevent diseases in emu: Isolate the sick and injured birds, for exAgriculture & Industry Survey - Vol. 22, Issue 8 - 2012 - 36

r. Ramu from Bangalore also wants to start emu farming with 30 pairs of emu chicks in Kolar. He also wants to know, Is it good business for future; what is the cost for 30 pairs of emu birds including cost for storage, feed per year, and transport; is any bank providing loans for this in Karnataka; where can I sell emu eggs, meat and other byproducts; which company provides emu birds (3 months), feed, and other infrastructural requirement; he also wants detailed project report on emu farming. Mr. Singh maintains emu farming is good business. Cost of birds depends on their age, so be very specific about the age of the birds as chicks will start laying after 15-18 months or else you can opt fully grown birds which will lay eggs this year too. On an average, adult pair of emu consumes feed of about Rs.8000-10,000 per year. He adds, I have no idea about the banks in Karnataka who are providing such loans, but can discuss it with any nationalized bank. Market for eggs is the main concern of the business, so check it with your local emu suppliers and ask them about buy back agreement of eggs if they have any. For 3 month old emu chicks always prefer a reliable and your nearest emu hatchery so that they can guide you in rearing chicks and can buy back the emu eggs. Another member wanted information about starting emu farming in Andhra Pradesh. Member G. A. Rao says, Emu farming in Andhra Pradesh is gaining more popularity. Emu farming proposals are covered under ongoing venture capital fund scheme for poultry sponsored by NABARD. The total unit cost is Rs.30 lakhs for 50 pairs. Subsidy amount of Rs.7.50 lakhs will be given by the NABARD. The applicant will be charged interest on Rs.19.50 lakhs only out of Rs.27.00 lakhs of initial loan sanctioned to him. The capital cost and recurring costs for 50 pairs emu birds will be around Rs. 30 lakhs. Out of which recurring expenditure will be Rs. 8.62 16.95 lakhs in the years to come (including interest portion included in the expenditure). Shed, fencing, pen area like structures costs about Rs.5.95 lakhs, cost of machinery will be Rs.3.55 lakhs and cost of 3 months old hicks will be Rs.7.50 lakhs. An amount of Rs. 13 lakhs is ear marked for feeding the birds. The party is capable of meeting the expenditure of maintenance of birds over and above the project cost. The surplus income on the farm is estimated at the pre-

vailing rates will be Rs.12.91 lakhs from third year onwards and increases up to Rs.29.46 lakhs. He adds, Currently the demand for emu chicks is very high which is over the supply at present. Therefore there is a great demand for chicks in the market. This situation will possibly remain over a period of 6 10 years. After this period marketing will be for raising of birds for oil and meat i.e., fattening of birds for meat purpose which has equal sales realization, as seen in sale of chicks to farmers. Presently eggs are sold at Rs.2000 each and chicks are being sold at Rs. 7500 to Rs. 8000 per chick. The 6 months old bird will cost about Rs. 10,000-12,000. The adult bird after two years will be costing around Rs.25000 Rs.30000 for breeding purpose. The emu birds will survive 25 to 30 years and generate income to the farmers continuously over a long period. Already one large farm at Siddipeta is marketing meat and emu oil in Hyderabad. He avers, Emu processing units are coming up at Nujiveedu are planning to purchase live birds at the cost of Rs.400 Kg. Even farmers can fatten the birds and can sell the birds for meat purpose in the coming two years. The cost of raising an emu bird for 2 years industry is in the developing stage right now. And the market is not established for emu products rather emu farmers trying to market the emu products in India. You may not find a buyer immediately, for sale of chicks (around 3m old) as I think in AP its somewhat saturated. But may gain the demand based on the success of upcoming processing units. He adds, Getting bank loans is not easy. I went to several banks but didnt get positive response from any of them. Feed costs are increasing and this affects the margins. Also, not all the females lay eggs and also the number of eggs per pair varies from one season to another. Emu oil is the main product and meat is the by product. Emu industry will have future if emu oil has the market. Also there is no continuous supply of emu meat in some selected cities/towns. You can buy the meat but I think continuous supply is not there. There are some upcoming emu processing units, which will start functioning in this year. He cautions, We need to wait and watch for their sales and business. If one thinks emu industry is going in the right direction then go ahead and invest otherwise wait for 1 or 2 years and watch the trend. Our Correspondent

will be around Rs.8000. The bird weighs about 35 to 40 Kgs. Each bird will fetch about Rs.12000 to 13000. Hence, farmers will not incur any losses if they rear under fattening scheme also and in maintenance of emu hatchery in future. Surplus income on the Emu farm will be about Rs. 12.00 to 29.00 lakhs in the coming years and farmers are capable of repaying the loan installments out of the income on the farm in the subsequent years. Member Raangs who started emu farming with 50 pairs of 3 months old emu birds speaks from his experience, Emu farming/

identified as a bacterium known as XanthomonasOxanopodpvPunicea. This bacterium can infect fruits, leaves and stems. Initially it appears as oily spots on leaves or fruits. It grows very fast, within 48 to 78 hours. R.B. Herbal Agro also conducted studies to determine when the disease was most common. Weather plays a large part in the occurrence of epidemics. The incidences of the disease are less common in the winter season but increase during the rainy season. The most favorable condition for the growth of these bacteria is high humidity more than 65 % RH and a temperature range of 28 to 320C. It grows slowly at temperatures below 150C. It appears more in the rainy season when the temperature is 320C 350C. These bacteria rarely breed in the winter season. When the disease has progressed, there are various ways to identify it. One simple way to detect the disease is when a Y shaped crack appears on the fruit. Black spots and decaying leaves are also other symptoms. On the stem, it appears as a black spot with an oozing type wound leading to a dead arm.

Controlling the Disease

Bacterial Blight of Pomegranate

n 2000 a bacterial epidemic spread had devastating effect on pomegranate crops. Till this day about 80 percent of pomegranate cultivation in Maharashtra, Karnataka, Andhra Pradesh and Gujarat are still getting affected. Mr. Patil informs, Pomegranate is a fruit that is expensive even when it is in season. This is mainly because the fruit has many medicinal properties. Due to its health benefits the demand for pomegranate continues to increase. He adds, It is useful in controlling prostate gland cancer. It also contains a high amount of antioxidants, which reduces heart problems and aging. It also has the ability to produce estrogen in women, Mr. Patil said about pomegranate.

Cause of the Disease

t first, identifying the cause of the dis ease was difficult. Mr. Patil explains, The anatomy of the pomegranate made bacteria an unlikely problem initially. Pomegranate rind is rich with tannins, which are antibacterial in nature. According to Mr. Patil the disease was later Agriculture & Industry Survey - Vol. 22, Issue 8 - 2012 - 38

r. Shankar Reddy of Raichur is a pome granate farmer having more than 3000 trees in his orchard, which is 7 years old. He has been fighting bacterial blight from past 4 years. He wanted more information to control the disease. After extensive research and studies, R.B. Herbal Agro along with M.P.K.V. Rahuri has developed a solution for the disease. It is called Char Sutri Karyakram or the Four Point Program, which helps prevent the spread of the disease. The four points are: 1. Cleanliness helps to reduce inoculums 2. Horticultural practices involves determining when to start seasons and determining how many fruits will grow on a plant. 3. Fertilization keeps the pomegranate healthy through organic manure. 4. Scheduled sprays for disease control helps control the growth of the bacteria. Mr. Patil recommends the following spray: Prophyalexin 3 Ml + Cop-E 0.4 Gm Per litre of water R. B. Bordo 2.5 Gm + Sulfer 2 Gm Per litre of water Prophyalexin 3 Ml + PMBS 2.5 Gm Per litre of water Xanthonashak 0.5 Gm + R. B. Bordo 2.5 Gm Per litre of water Pseudo-FL 5 2 Ml + 5 Litres of Milk Per litre of water Mr. Patil explained additional research for better yield saying, We have studied and gathered data on the role of potassium and

nitrogen on Bacterial Blight. We also found that biofertilizer is a useful tool to control bacterial blight. Optimum levels of N & K are required in the plant tissue to fight against bacterial blight. Mr. Patil recommends a suitable INM programme to have a higher yield without any incidence of the disease. When pointed out that in Chile pomegranate is treated with methyl bromide to protect the fruit from certain invasive pests, Mr. Patil says, Methyl bromide is a banned chemical since it is harmful for reducing ozone layer one should not use it for any purpose. Member Mr. Hiren Pancholi appreciates all the information on controlling bacterial blight of pomegranate. He says, We have recently promoted a product called anthium dioxcide from DuPont, which is a biocide, kills bacteria, spores, virus, fungus and algae. It was tried out at a half acre pomegranate farm in Solapur area and results were very good. Fruits were not bursting after using anthium dioxcide and only thing was that there was only oily spot at the bottom of the fruits. I am interested to carry out some professional trial to further continue with the positive result received at Solapur. Mr. Patil recommends giving the material for trials to MPKV Rahuri. Dr Raghuvanshi is a person working on this problem, he informs.

r. Ramdas J. Patil is the CEO and R & D Chief at R. B. Herbal Agro. He is also a member of Board of Studies in Plant Pathology and Microbiology at Mahatma Phule Krishi Vidyapeeth (MPKV), Rahuri, Maharashtra. He has over 15 years of experience as a senior scientist in private sector. He worked as a technical director to Pomegranate Growers Association. R. B. Herbal Agro manufactures biofertilizers and biocontrol agents. It is also conducting extensive research on bacterial blight of pomegranate. R. B. Herbal Agro in association with M.P.K.V Rahuri is working on the solution for the deadly disease affecting pomegranate crops since 2000. This bacterial blight of pomegranate has afflicted about 80% area in Maharashtra, Karnataka, Andhra, and Gujarat. Mr. Patil, along with M.P.K.V. Rahuri, has worked extensively on this project and come out with solution to control this disease with an integrated approach called Char Sutri Karyakram i.e. Four Point Program, which involves cleanliness, horticulture practices, fertilization, and spray schedule to control disease. We had started in 1999 with a very small unit. We were among the first to start liquid technology for biofertilizers. We offer many different kinds of biofertilizers like azotobactor , acitobactor, rhizobium, potash solubizing bacteria, phosphate solubiling bacteria, silica soluniling bacteria, and acetobactor, says Mr. Patil. The company mainly targets horticulture growing farmers and organic base produces for biofertilizers and biocontrol agents. Mr. Patil has done M.Sc., a course on mass production of bio-pesticides at NCIM New Delhi and MKV Parbhani, a course on mycorhizal technology at Mumbai, and a course on Methyl Bromide alternatives at Israel. A senior member wanted to know if it is possible to have brahmi or stevia as intercrop for pomegranate farming. Mr. Patil advices, We do not recommend intercropping in pomegranate field except marigold and onion, during first six months of plantation. Mr. Gaurav Deshpande is planning to grow a pomegranate farm. He says, My farm is near Akola, Maharashtra. I want to know about the best variety of saplings, where will I get the best of the saplings, and how to identify the saplings. I want to grow Bhagva (or any other better variety as per your recommendation) in my 5 acre land. Mr. Patil replies, Bhagva is the best variety but in your area rainfall is more, therefore short duration variety Mrudula is suggested for you. Another member Mr. Vijai Grewal enquires, I am interested in pomegranate farming in Sri Ganganagar, Rajasthan. I want to know if it is commercially feasible to grow pomegranate in Rajasthan; what variety should I plant; the agronomic practices for such plants; any other info which will help me to analyze the pro and cons of such venture; and any other profitable horticulture alternative. Training and Advice for Farmers

.B. Herbal Agro conducts training pro grams at their training center and also at the field level to educate farmers. He proudly claims, We have conducted about 300 training programs so far, maintains Mr. Patil. He adds, We advise people to choose a scientific approach starting from soil analysis to selecting the soil for the plantation. Also, we give more attention to root and soil health rather than only on pest control through the use of chemicals. According to Mr. Patil, there are thousands of success stories of farmers who have employed their methods. Farmers using the Four Point Program and correct bio-fertilizers are now enjoying good quality pomegranate. R B Herbal Agro provides training program for farmers in local language. One is being conducted at Vaijapur Dist, Aurangabad on 22/06/2012 at 10 am. Anybody can attend the programe. There are no charges, Mr. Patil informs.

good income for farmers. It is good for the farmers, if they choose a scientific approach starting from soil analysis to selecting the soil for the plantation. Also farmers are fed up with the use of chemicals and fertilizers to control either root or any other disease. He adds, Farmers are facing huge losses with the production cost of pomegranate going sky high and low market value for their produce. In order to address such heavy losses, it is necessary to improve soil health along with plant health with locally available techniques and ingredients to control any problem either in the soil or in the plant. be commercially cultivated in Rajasthan. Bhagva would be a good variety to grow. If you provide us average rainfall and temp data of at least one year, we would suggest you the rest. Member JP is planning to grow Pomegranate on 14 acres in his farm in Anantapur District, Andhra Pradesh. He wants to know how to prepare the land and how to test the soil health as per best practices. Mr. Patil recommends, Pomegranates are cultivated in Anantapur District. Before planting the saplings you are required to test soil for all parameters, like pH, EC, water holding capacity, lime, Na and all nutrients. You can test the soil sample at Shet Jameen Meemansa Prayogshala, Herbal House, Savarkar Nagar Satana Dist Nasik- 423301, which is dedicated to pomegranate. They will suggest suitability as well as distance between plants, variety and all suggestions for its growth. Mr. Gaurav Deshpande also owns a land piece near Guwahati, Assam. He wants to know if it is feasible to grow Pomegranate in this area. Mr. Patil replies, Guwahati has heavy rainfall, therefore it would be difficult to grow pomegranate, but if you provide meteorological data I would suggest its feasibility. Mr. Yogesh Telawne has 23 acres of land in Chiplun Taluka, close to Vashishta river in the Konkan belt. He asks for advice regarding pomegranate cultivation, I want to know whether pomegranate can be planted in my region and also let me know which would be the best variety that can be grown. Mr. Patil advises, Kokans climatic condition is not suitable for pomegranate cultivation. You can still plant pomegranate on a small plot with Mrudula variety for experimentation. Bio Care Technology

Markets various species of plants and medicinal seeds. Based in Dindigul, Tamil Nadu

io Care Technology, a company in the agricommodity industry, dealing in agricultural exports and supplies was established in November of 2010 in the Dindigul district of Tamil Nadu. With the advice of NABARD and wasteland development schemes, Bio Care Technology markets various species of plants and medicinal seeds. The company now operates under the watchful eye of its managing director, Mr. Suriya Praganantham, a Management of Science BBA graduate with six years of experience as an agricultural marketing field Adviser. Products and Acquisitions Dealing in the export of fresh vegetables and fruits while also supplying horticultural plants, medicinal plants and seeds, the company has now expanded to taking care of contract farming of horticultural, medicinal and forestry plants. Among the many items exported by the company is the banana g9 while one of the horticultural items manufactured by the company is an organic mixer that entails the use of bio concepts. All of the companys products are sold under the name Queen Brand. In the growing of their various plant species, the company purchases seeds from accredited and praised seed companies as well as the best seed collection agents in all of India. From time to time, the company also sources their seeds from the government sector. When asked about their annual turnover, Mr. Suriya shared, Our annual turnover is Rs. Ten lacs only. Quality Control As a company that supplies and exports to various locations, quality control is one of the most important parts of the companys daily routines. For example, with bananas being one of the main export goods of Bio Care Technology, a lot of care goes into ensuring that customers only receive the best of their products. We need to take care of the size and weight of fruits, packing materials, and [the way the products are packed, Mr. Suriya shared. Even ripening periods, frozen shipment containers and housekeeping have to be well managed on a daily basis to make sure that the fruits meet the standards for export.

Because export standards are so high, it is difficult for the company accept outside suppliers. For example, if a spice powder maker wishes to supply to Bio Care Technology, the company will send an initial inquiry. The company will also require samples and quality certificates. Only after a detailed search of the suppliers information and a visit to the suppliers area of operation will a decision be made. Target Market and Competition Bio Care Technology looks to big importers as their main market and though they have not yet received finalized orders internationally, countries such as Iran and South Africa have already shown interest in the companys products. To properly meet the demands of the domestic and international market, the company goes through e-mail inquiries and also surveys the prices of products and percentages. Identifying companies such as Mahalakshmi Exports and Stone Color Exports as some of their main competitors, Mr. Suriya still maintains that their products have an edge over the competing brands. He said, Our products are number one in the industry because we maintain the quality of our products [and] our growers are qualified [people]. Challenges As it continues to engage in the agricultural exports industry, Bio Care Technology has faced its fair share of challenges. With regard to the toughest problem faced by

Suriya Praganantham the company so far, Mr. Suriya identified payments as its main challenge. Most of the payment problems come from customers. We think that [honest] customers are [hard to find] and we are searching [for them continuously], said Mr. Suriya. Another issue is the lack of proper warehouse facilities in India. This issue is prevalent nation wide and has even been addressed in the news. Mr. Suriya acknowledged this problem saying, Warehouses must be available for all agro products and agri products. Growing produce is Gods gift and we should save the product and [be able to properly supply these products] when demanded or when natural calamities occur. Advice and Future Plans With the company operating smoothly, Mr. Suriya described the future plans of Bio Care Technology rather succinctly as he said, Our company should hold the number one position for supply of products. Seeing as the company has already done very well thus far, becoming widely acknowledged as a trusted distributor of agricultural products, it would seem that the company has a very bright future ahead of them. The company, however, has shown a willingness to help other companies thrive in the industry and Mr. Suriya willingly shared a few pieces of advice. Customers are the most important part of the business, Mr. Suriya shared, Technical people should be trained to get more ideas from other leading countries. Will it get passed?

Or, acted upon? Not until 2014 election? he government has in prin ciple decided to expand the coverage of population under the proposed Food Security Bill to include almost 70 per cent of Indians, who will have the legal right to cheap food, against the earlier proposal of 64 per cent of the same. It will also end the below and above poverty line (BPL and APL) demarcation, prevailing in the current public distribution system (PDS). However, entitlements under the Antyodaya Anna Yojana (for the poorest of the poor) would continue as in the current structure.

ven though the overall agriculture sector is expected to do well in 2012-13, the major crop production is projected to fall by 0.5 per cent, the economic think-tank Centre for Monitoring Indian Economy (CMIE) said. Major crop production is projected to decline in 2012-13 by 0.5 per cent, owing to a fall in output of nonfood crops like soyabean, cotton and rapeseed, the CMIE said in its monthly report. Cotton production is expected to fall 7.8 per cent to 32.2 million bales in 2012-13 even though the acreage rose over 12 per cent to 29.3 lakh hectares by June. We expect the cultivation to slow down and settle at a level lower than last year. Hence, a fall in acreage is expected to limit production in 2012-13, it added. The city-based research agency said that a projected growth in output of livestock, forestry and fisheries, along with a modest 4 per cent rise in production of minor crops, is expected to lift growth of the agriculture sector to 2.4 per cent in 2012-13. The kharif cultivation of foodgrains and oilseeds has been sluggish due to delayed rains. To boost the cultivation of these crops, the Centre had announced a steep increase in their minimum support price (MSP) last month.

The proposed changes have been strongly opposed by a section of civil society on the grounds that it makes the Bill minimalist and unacceptable. The enhanced coverage would also include almost 90 per cent of the population in 250 identified poor districts in the country. We have in-principle agreed to expand the coverage of the proposed Bill and would now submit the same to the standing

committee of Parliament, which is vetting an earlier draft, a senior food ministry official says. Basmati rice exports!

After putting in place a problem-resolution mechanism for infrastructure projects and an investment tracking system for projects over Rs 1,000 crore directly under the Prime Ministers Office (PMO), the government has decided to set up a project clearance board, on the lines of the Foreign Investment Promotion Board (FIPB), chaired by the Cabinet secretary, for review and issue of one-time clearances, including security clearance.

"It's mostly going to be about productivity," Angel Gurria, head of the Organisation for Economic Cooperation and Development (OECD), said at a press conference in Rome, explaining that farmland area would increase only slightly. World farm production has grown at 2.0 percent a year in recent decades but the rate is expected to slow to 1.7 percent a year, the joint report said. Iran, Saudi Arabia and the United Arab Emirates were the three large export markets during 2011-12, Mr Gupta said. Non-basmati exports have also kept the same pace as the aromatic rice. Their shipments have exceeded 5 million tonnes so far. Total rice shipments, including both basmati and non-basmati, were 7.3 mt in 2011-12, making India the largest rice exporter, said Mr Vijay Setia, former President of All-India Rice Exporters Association. Mr Amitabh Kant, Chief Executive Officer and Managing Director, DMIC Development Corporation Ltd, said that the Detailed Project Report of the proposed southern corridor is being undertaken by Japan and should be ready before the meeting of the Prime Ministers of both the countries in December. However, he said the proposed southern corridor has several gaps, the main one being goods getting held up in Chennai and Ennore ports. Importantly, there needs to be smooth movement of goods produced in Karnataka to ports in the South. Official level talks have come to the conclusion that there is little scope to develop a dedicated freight corridor or a high-speed container train lane in the South like in the case of DMIC or even in the proposed eastern corridor. Therefore, the aim now is to reduce logistics costs in the region by moving goods fast through an 8-10 lane highway from different parts, including Karnataka, to ports in Tamil Nadu. Meanwhile, the development of an eastern corridor is being considered mainly keeping in mind the farm belt.

High water content drags wet cocoa bean prices!

igh water content in wet co coa beans has made Central Arecanut and Cocoa Marketing and Processing Cooperative Ltd (Campco) to lower its price to Rs 33 a kg. Mr M. Suresh Bhandary, Managing Director of Campco, said that due to the high water content, the cooperative has fixed Rs 33 a kg for wet cocoa beans. Earlier, the price was Rs 40 a kg. He said water content is more in wet cocoa beans after the rains started. (This means 100 kg of wet cocoa beans, which yielded 33 kg of dry beans in summer, yielded 24-25 kg of dry beans during the rainy months.) Stating that the cooperative tried to maintain the price of Rs 40 a kg, he said in recent days it got several lots of wet cocoa beans

whose yield was below 25 per cent. Proportionately we brought down the price by Rs 7 a kg, he said, adding: We have not reduced the rates of dry beans. If the growers supply us the dry beans, we give them the price of Rs 135-140 a kg. Worlds top oilseed prices fall!

We now have visitors population that exceeds one lakh and odd, to be exact one lakh and ten thousands. Readers/visitors are very much welcome to browse though our website and see what changes have come about in the last decade, what interest agriculture and agri-related products and services hold interest for the visitors. Now, there is a whole new world of demands, products and services and even issues in the agriculture sector that draw such a steady crowd, so to say. Agriculture in India is no more a playground for woolly policy makers, and more so for policy talkers. In the name of agriculture reforms, we have held the poor and almost large ill-informed farmers distributed over wide different geography of this great country, about turning them almost a new generation of serfs. A new generation of food production robots. Indian farmers are on an average all uniform debtors. This debtor class is even now not having any real future. Anyway, the persisting plight of debt-ridden farmers, the suicide-prone agriculture policies and practices is evidence enough what we see is not very exciting. So, in this current context of changing Indian agriculture scenario, yes, there is a rising production of foodgrains, rising export demand for Indian agri products, mainly wheat and rice, what we need to do is to put agriculture on a need-based rising curve. Let us now see what the people want. The Vadamalai Media online activities, in which the agri website is now the growth engine readers can have a clear idea what the people, distributed across the globe really want. Our website is a barometer of sorts to know what the agri sector can deliver and how we can add value-added services to the agri sector. There are vast opportunities for everyone, yes, really for everyone engaged in agriculture or everyone who has a piece of landed property can now think of new opportunities in this critical sector. No, other commodities boom is also opening up new opportunities. But for so long agriculture sector is a closed shop. It was a playground of the rhetoric! Even the Sonia Gandhi-led National Advisory Council can turn its attention from such regressive legislation like Food Security Bill that got stuck in Parliament now for the right reasons. Why universalise right to food. The right to food, to life, education and a corruption free government are all now legitimate rights of the citizens. What is new about the right to food? It is sheer populism. It is irresponsible populism that had hit the government finances so badly that now Indian faces an economic slowdown. Can anyone in the NAC give a solution to the slowdown? So, we have to be a bit realistic, stand on the ground and not talk too much about woolly pieces of legislation that could get the government stuck in the mud, as it has already now done. The PDS are working fairly well in most states and let us improve it. Let us focus on problem areas and problems pockets, malnutrition etc. As for the future, one path is clear and sure. That is the e-commerce as an emerging business and economic and entrepreneurial world. It is better to stand by private initiatives, private sector investments and let the market operate, let there be an open and free market environment. Let us pull back our evangelists for some time!

Economy slowdown: who denies, who acknowledges?

Bring in the best talents!

From outside, from the corporate world

The corporate captains of sorts!
o that there can be some action, more investments, more confi dence and more trust in what the government does. There are any number of credible names. One K.V.Kamath, one Deepak Parekh who are all speaking out their minds on issues that are also weighing on the minds of the common man. If you read the Indian newspapers or see the TV channels the news is all about small matters, day to day newsbreaks. Monsoon failures and such things dont make for news in India, not in the mainstream newspapers. Or, if it is, it is relegated to inside pages. At best, it is all about technical details, El Nino from the Pacific oceans and here too the robustness of telling the true state of affairs is qualified for line after line. The only best piece of news or news commentary came from Ashok Gulati, who heads the Commission for Agricultural costs and Prices. At least we hear this year's monsoon could be a repeat of the 2002, the IMD forecast normal long range weather (by 101% but the reality turned to be a rude shock, The same for another drought year: 2009.This year too, from all accounts, that is accounts that are not even reported widely let alone discussed, nor we hear any concern from the high and mighty in Delhi, the current drought could be a repeat of the past such events. Not from the PM nor from his deputy at the planning commission. Two ministers now left: their gaffes! So, all we have left are the two ministers, Salman Kurshid and P.Chidambaram. The duo were in Bangalore, we dont know on what mission but both helped to spill the beans so to say. Kurshid at least spoke his mind out, though in an indiscreet manner! In a manner of speaking he reflected the mood of the people. The PM doubling up as the FM is not going to cause any miracles! For the

most simple reason, those who are going to implement the PMcum_FM's thoughts, not to say they are in what ways any wellthought out new policies? Back to Salman Kurshid. The law minister also spilled the other beans. He said the PM couldnt show the direction nor might not be so efficient this time. So let us bring in the star, Rahul Gandhi who, Kurshid said candidly so far played a cameo role. Small roles, now and then. So, we have to wait for the star, Rahul, till he is ready to take over. Came the reactions from the Opposition immediately.
Yes, we have sufficient food stocks, so the availability and the prices could be managed, inflation could be kept under tight leash? There is no such deep reflections from the ministers, bureaucrats nor from the party headquarters. So, who is talking of these weighty matters?

The BJP spokesperson, Ravi Shankar Prasad, said the ruling party at last acknowledged the fact that Rahul is nowhere now and he is in no mood to assume the leadership of the party or the government. But came the reactions of other parties, with some ideological backgrounds like the SP. The SP spokesperson, Shahid Siddiqui said that Rahul has no leadership qualities, nor has he any ideological moorings. What does that mean? It means a lot of things. Even Kurshid almost said the Congress party has no ideological focus. The party doesnt have any core belief system. It must have an ideology, after all. This, the party now lost out to various forces that are anything but core belief systems. Of course, the Congress party immediately tried to rebut the Opposition attack but it was very muted. To be frank, the very Congress party itself is now depleted of any talents. What it is left with are all opportunists or at worst sycophants.

Agriculture: the big picture!

World food production is growing 2 per cent per year!
Global food production would rise and in a sustainable manner! UN agencies predict!
free electricity supply to farms is more politics than economics. As pointed by new observers, from the world banking industry in several countries of the world, especially the new emerging socalled "breakaway" nations, there is no commitment to time, promise or time or even financial integrity. Why so much large scale corruption in India? So suddenly and so vast where even the key ministers are involved? There must be some deeper analysis. That is one more reason why our peoples standard of living is still way behind such countries like China, Malaysia and other Asian nations. Our per capita income is 1,500 dollars. In China it is already 5,000 dollars. So, where we underperform? We not only underperform, we also pretend a lot. We dont openly talk about our own underperformance. We reset to denial! So, as far as farm productivity is concerned there is vast scope even in India. So, the global challenges on the food front can be met and met with some little efforts here and there. Our farm productivity outlook must change. India is a farm scenario where large scale small farmers are the reality. So, more greenhouse farming technology, high value crops, of course modern food supply chains, FDI in modern retail chain would only improve farm efficiency, only would ensure timely payment etc. What we have done so far is simply not enough. One reason is the lack of awareness among the average Indian farmers. Why farmers must undertake to take their produce to the urban markets? No need at all. Farm gate collection and even instant payments can & Industry Survey

he two global agencies, one UN agency, one FAO and the other, Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD) have come out with new perspectives on the world scenario and the food needs of a world population. FAO head, JosenGraziano, OECD head, Angel Gurria said in Rome the other day that by 2050 world would be needing something like 605 more food production to sustain the population and growth of the world economy. They are all hopeful that this goal can be achieved. How? World farm production has been growing at two per cent per year! In recent decades this seems to be the more optimistic big picture story! But at the same time, the rate is now expected to slow to something like 1.7 per cent a year. But despite the slowdown the farm production rate is expected to be ahead of the demographic growth rate. Then, there is, as the agencies say, vast spaces of land in Latin America and Carribean and sub-Saharan Africa to raise the productivity of agricultural lands. Why, even in India the scope for raising farm productivity is immense. Unfortunately, so far in India agriculture sector production is only our focus, productivity is not year a focus, to say the least. See the wasteful ways, the wasteful uses of water, land, why even energy,

ow the demographic divi dend, the benefits of a young population would impact the economy and society? Slowing down of the major economies! There is this worry everywhere, in the USA, in Eurozone countries, in the Indian situation and now China too faces this challenge. In this situation how Indian scene does play out? How this decade has begun? The demographic dividend: has the transition begun well? For the young Indians? For the older Indians? There is often too much talk about the socalled demographic dividend. India is often touted as the young country with more people in the younger age group. More than half the population is said to be below the age of 25. More than 65% of the population is below the age of 35. But then what have this demographic advantages brought about? For the greater good of the country and society? According to demographic experts, more than 400 million young Indian will enter the labour, working age group in the next 16 years. Writes one keen observer of the scenario: in spite of the advantage India has over others, including China, where already there is evidence that there is a labour shortage, there is a rise in wages, there is a rise in demand for more urban housing and the average age of the population is showing signs of an ageing population. There is much coverage on these topics about China. Now, there is also the new concern about a slowing down of the Chinese economy. In a new book by Ruchir Sharma, an economist working with the international invest bank, Morgan Stanley Investment Management,(Breakout Nations,2012) it is detailed about changes in the emerging markets of Asia and elsewhere, notably in the new markets like Russia and Mexico, not to speak of India and China. The key point detailed is about how the economies of the two countries, India and China, are comparable and also distinct. In one or two critical observations, the rise of the rich billionaires in India and China, much that we witness today is the rise of large scale corruption, political and corporate corruption in India goes untackled, so far. While in China it is tackled with a strong hand if the billionaires list goes up or their individual accumulation of wealth crosses ceiling. Also, the political scenario is also very different in the two major emerging markets.

How this decade would run out?

The demographic dividend will help India?

India and China compared! India's rural/urban populations transform themselves in the next 10-15 years?
In China two recent high profile expulsions from the Communist party is an indication that though China might be a party dictatorship there is no tolerance of corruption on a large scale. While in India we allow or have long allowed political bigwigs, may be ruling party bigwigs as well as the bigwigs of the alliance partners in the ruling coalition, to such an ing population and that would swell our urban, working middle class population to almost as much as from the current 400 million to nearly 80 million. What we can be sure is that what had happened in China, to its urban migration, its current labour shortage, its current real estate bubble like scenario etc might follow in India as well. The current per capita income in China is now 5,000 dollars while India's is 1,400 dollars. So, India is relatively still a poor country compared with China. Also, China's reputation as the fastest growing economy is now fading. It is currently an economy which is described by Ruchir Sharma as a "middle income territory". In October, 2010, The Economist carried a cover story titled "How India's growth will outpace China's"...Now, India's growth has been on the decline, right? In Asia, it is pointed out by many that Indonesia and Philippines grew at a faster pace, in the first half of this year. The point is that India in the next 1015 year period would have to grow at a rate that no one in India can ensure, would be anything at 8/9 per cent. May be we have to assume a lower rate. Also, considering how the Indian sociological environment is conspiring against the youth brigade. The old refuse to give way to the young. A PM is at 80 still at the helms, a President at near 80 holds forth, also others, ministers not knowing what he reads out at the UN meant for his Portuguese counterpart half way through! A Home Minister gives to Pakistan a wrong list of terrorists! And now the telecom scams from which when we would recover. Corruption reigns high, most youth politics, MPs and others seem to be family heirs. Is this a democratic society? Will the youth power, dormant still today, rest content with its future and destiny or will India see an Arab-type Youth Spring? May be! extent that corruption goes unpunished in India while it is punished in a ruthless manner in China. This applies to both politics and corporate sectors. While in India except for the recent high profile and large scale 2G corruption scandal where many big corporates and the high profile ministers and party MPs were thrown into jail for long time. How the polity and the economy would transform themselves into one of opportunities for the younger generation? There seems to be no clear answer. An observer notes that our current leadership, mostly drawn from the older age groups are unwilling to learn any lessons from the contemporary world, namely from the contemporary economies and societies. As on date there is a concern about the worldwide slowdown. Is the recession over? No one has pronounced any clearer answer. India is supposed to have one of the largest economists elite and the Prime Minister is reputed to be a very competent economist. Yet, we are not told how the next say,10-15 years, the period in which the current 25 age group would attain a very active work-
