SDF India
Deals in agricultural equipment such as tractors and diesel engines. Located in Ranipet, Tamil Nadu
stablished on the 20th of June 2002, SDF India deals in agricultural equipment such as tractors and diesel engines. The companys state-of-theart manufacturing facilities are located in Ranipet. For the smooth operation and manufacturing of DEUTZ-FAHR tractors, the company employs almost 400 highly qualified specialists. Globally, the SDF Group has close to 3000 employees. Keeping an eye on SDF India Ltd is its Managing Director and CEO, Mr. Bhanu Sharma. Mr. Bhanu is a proud Business Technology graduate in Agri Engineering and has also attained an MBA from a top-notch university. With over three decades of experience in tractors and agri-mechanization, Mr. Bhanu is more than qualified to oversee the operations of the company. Products and Services Knowing the importance of reliable equipment in the agricultural sector, SDF India gives all of their effort to supply customers around the world with farm equipment, diesel engines and, their most popular product, agricultural tractors. Perhaps the most appealing aspect of SDF Indias products, however, is the after sales services that their clients are entitled to. The company makes sure to keep in touch with all of their customers as they regularly have doorstep customer contacts, local mechanic training seminars and a mobile van service support group. Mr. Bhanu shared, Our each and every customer is very important to us. Our endeavor is to be nearest to our farthest customer. In order to achieve this goal, we have established an extensive network of dealers, after sales and spare parts outlets and spare parts distributors. In addition, SDF also provides their clients with two years warranty on all purchases as well as seven free repairs or checkups on any DEUTZFAHR products.
Marketing Seeking to establish the company as a leader in technology and as a reliable figure in the market, SDF India has invested time and effort to establish the companys products through distribution and BTL activities. Through these efforts alone, the company has already successfully secured a doubledigit market share in the key application segment. Mr. Bhanu explained, We are a niche, reliable and technologically advanced player in the Indian market and we operate in a market segment as a major contributor of Indian tractors. Dealers Playing a huge part in the companys marketing is their dealers. The company currently enjoys partnerships with over 100 dealers in India, all of which are strategically located in regions with high market potentials. Mr. Bhanu expressed, We look for business people are our distributor partners, [people] who understand technology and have a true desire to grow with us. SDF also provides their dealers with benefits such as assured longterm business associations, which secures them a viable part in advanced agrimechanization market. Challenges As with any other company, SDF India was not without its own set of growing
Bhanu Sharma
pains when it was first established. Just like any foreign company entering the Indian market, the company had to first deal with dealer viability. Mr. Bhanu explained, The challenges are similar to what any new international player faces. Intensity of challenges may vary. For example, in marketing we had a product range in the upper premium segment of the industry whereas a majority of the Indian market lies below this segment. Overcoming the Problems The first step that the company took to deal with its initial challenges, was to promote their products for what they were: high quality agricultural pieces of equipment. Because of the product range and exemplary services offered by the company, SDF India soon overcame their problems. In fact, SDF Indias shares with the SDF Group continue to grow and they are now emerging as an irreplaceable contributor to the SDF Groups business. New equipment has also been slated for release in the coming years as Mr. Bhanu said, We are surely working on new products and product ranges, which will be announced in due course of time. Competitors Due to their huge presence in the Indian market, SDF India has been faced with strong competition from both local and international companies, each trying to stake a claim in the agricultural equipment market. To edge out the competition, SDF India employs various strategies, all of which are proving to be quite beneficial. The first thing the company did was to start on a rather aggressive marketing strategy that revolves around the expansions of its sales and after sales networks. The network expansion was crucial in widening the companys reach to
Swastik Enterprises
Engaged in the manufacturing of dairy equipment, and specializing in milking machines. Based in Karnal, Haryana
other potential clients. The second part of the companys strategy was simply to have faith in the products they offered. DEUTZ-FAHR tractors offer an excellent combination of power, performance, reliability and exceptional value for money and now the new AGROMAXX Series tractor launch is very well addressing the majority customer segment in India, Mr. Bhanu said. Future Plans With an edge over international and local competition as well as a strong two-digit stake in the Indian market, SDF India is now looking to the future. The company has declared that they will now focus on penetrating deep into the domestic market for 2012. When asked about this, Mr. Bhanu said, We have redefined the markets by analyzing markets on HP segments and a new network distribution strategy is in place. Now it will be an alignment of market demands and our product offerings on the same platform. The company has already set itself a fiveyear goal to reach to secure SDF Indias longevity. Mr. Bhanu shared, Our five year business plan is targeted to acquiring a place amongst the top players in the Indian market, not only numbers but also as a significant and technologically advanced reliable tractor player. Mr. Mohit Kumar is the executive director of KGVK Agro Ltd. Though he started his career in the corporate sector, Mr. Mohit gained the opportunity to work with PRADAN, a non-profit organization. During his 9-year stay at PRADAN, he was able to complete his MBA from Symbiosis, Pune. It was on deputation from PRADAN that Mr. Mohit joined the KGVK. Products KGVK Agro Ltd provides various farming equipments at affordable prices to the farming community and is confident that their products are at the top of the food chain. We are the largest supplier of the weeder in Bihar and Jharkhand. Almost 48,000 pieces of the weeder are sold in a season and we have the capacity to manufacture 1,000 weeders in a day, Mr. Mohit said. KGVK attributes the success of their products to a state of the art system. A computer based

All the manufactured components are made to undergo special phosphate based chemical treatments for rust-proofing, anticorrosive treatment and painting. Specially designed fixtures are used to make sure that all the separate pieces of a product stay in place before welding begins. R. R. Arjun Mohan sheds, which will eventually need to be replaced after three years, using tarpaulin will create a dramatic decrease in cost as it is long lasting and weather resistant. Tarpaulin can also facilitate the maintenance of biogas. Mr. Arjun supports the use of biogas saying, I could supply a biogas plant for Rs.7000 which would run for more than 7 years with the dung of two cows. From this you could get full gas for your entire family. Customers : Arjun Agri Industries has identified all farmers and large agriculturists as their target customers. To reach them, the company maintains frequent advertisements in newspapers as well as local channels. However, the company has also looked to exportation to help bring in more revenue. Mr. Arjun shared, People give importance to quality and international buyers are very quality conscious, preferring to buy from companies that are reputable and maintain high quality and service. Today, the company enjoys a high demand of biogas holders and vermicompost beds from international clients. Future Plans : As an agri equipment supplier, the company has certainly had its fair share of hardships. According to Mr. Arjun, frequent power cuts, dollar fluctuations and the shortage of skilled laborers are the companys main challenges at the moment. Despite the challenges faced, however, the company still has high hopes for their future and growth. By 2017, we plan to make this enterprise into a Rs. 500 crores company, Mr. Arjun concluded hopefully. Our Correspondent For more information, contact : Mr. R. R. Duron Energy
Supplies solar energy products. Based in Bangalore
uron Energy was set up in 2008 within Idealab, an in cubator of technology com panies based in Pasadena, California. Duron moved its headquarters to Bangalore, India in 2009. The company supplies solar energy products. About 403 million households in India are without electricity, with the majority of them in rural India. As 47% of the Indian rural population has either no electricity or partial electricity, they need alternate source of energy. Presently these consumers depend on kerosene lamps for lighting needs. This is harmful for their health and also not a complete solution for lighting the home, says Mr. Vernie Sannoo, vicepresident retail sales. He adds, To cater to the needs of such consumers solar home lighting products were launched. With this children are able to study, small shops can operate for longer time, and cooking can be done in a safer environment. This contributes to increased income, upgraded life and it contributes to overall wellbeing of people. Challenges faced : The company faced challenges in building distribution network to reach the villages. Educating people about the benefits of solar energy and providing easy finance options to facilitate purchase of products were other challenges the company faced. Mr. Sannoo says, People are used to CFL
Vernie Sannoo achievements, Mr. Sannoo says, We have lighted over 20,000 households in India reaching out to approximately 2500 villages. Our goal is to reach out to 4 lac villages in India in the next five years, adding, Initial phase was tough when we had to sell 2-3 lights in a village. Then onwards people have started understanding the benefits. For example in one village in Jaunpur district of UP, we have lighted more than 100 houses. However, we also take help of our other interlinked offices in China, Thailand, Malaysia, Germany, and Australia, he maintains. Further speaking about competition, Mr. Rajput says, Our competitors are Cimbria, Buhler, and Fowler Westrup to name a few. Grain Storage in India : Commenting on reports that food worth US$ 12 billion which can feed 80 million people for an entire year is being wasted in India every year due to poor grain storage facilities, Mr. Rajput says, Sometimes back it was the Government/ FCI who took decision to create state of the art grain storage facility for India. At that time about 2 lac ton storage was created in North India with additional storages in different parts of the country. That was a good beginning. With a little more focus on grain storage the government can bring about a vast change to what the world thinks about our grain management skills. He adds, The agricultural industry as such is facing a big problem as compared to the other industries. It is the unpredictable nature of the climate, the policy changes of the government that makes or breaks this industry. If the crop is good but the industry is not allowed to export, the surplus rots on the street. Speaking about the achievements of Petkus, Mr. Rajput says, We have to build the seeds industry so that good seeds are produced by the seeds companies with good seed treatment techniques. This will in turn bring good produce for the farmers. When the crop is in abundance then we have the processing and storage techniques for the industry and ultimately the whole industry benefits. ubing Machinenfabrik GmbH & C. KG was established in 1949. The company offers drinking, conveyor and climate control system for livestock. Lubing set up the India office in 1996. It is headquartered in Pune, Maharashtra, with branch offices at Assand and Namakkal. Lubing India caters to the technological needs of the poultry industry in all stages of the production cycle including feeding, drinking, brooding and environment control applications. The latest technologies offered by Lubing include automated egg collection and egg conveyors. They help in reducing manpower requirement and fast egg collection, says Mr. Surinder Gadoo, managing director. One of the most popular products of Lubing in

also used for increasing humidity if required and for disinfecting the poultry houses. The climate system creates very fine mist as water is pumped through misting nozzles at 70 bar pressure. The fine mist cools the atmosphere and hence reduces the temperature. The only problem we sometime face is bad quality of water at farms, says Mr. Gadoo. Drinking Systems Regarding the speciality of drinking systems for birds, Mr. Gadoo says, These, once installed, do not need replacement for years, thus saving lot of cost for poultry owners over the years unlike the other locally made systems. Customer Satisfaction Mr. Gadoo maintains all the product lines offered are customized as per the requirement of each farmer. As the farm layout and poultry sheds sizes change at the farm, the products offered are customized, he says, adding, As we have service engineers at local level, in case of any problem, our engineers are at the site in no time. The company also provides onsite training for using these poultry systems to their customers. To reach to the remotest parts of India we have 7 sales offices in different states with around 20 sales people who make farmers understand our system in local language before they take a buy call, says Mr. Gadoo. Competition Mr. Gadoo maintains that they face competition mainly from international companies. Our products are superior in quality as they are manufactured in Germany under stringent quality control. Secondly, Lubing is a world leader in all the systems we deal in. Lubing, Germany was established in 1949. So we have a vast experience behind us, he says. Further speaking about new innovations, Mr. Gadoo says, Recently we have introduced new nipple called combi matter and twin clean line. Both the products were in-
Surinder Gadoo troduced after feedback from farmers across the globe. Challenges Faced The main challenge faced by the company was convincing the poultry farmers to use automated poultry applications and systems. Mr. Gadoo says, The challenge we always face is price comparison with cheap manufacturers. He further adds, The toughest part was the period when bird flu was declared in India for the first time. The times were tougher for farmers but still we asked our sales people to be in touch with our customers. Future Plans The company plans to popularize the use of conveyor system and fast introduction of innovation done in Germany in future. We feel that now India is ready for automations at all levels, adds Mr. Gadoo. Mr. Gadoo is a computer graduate and an MBA in finance. There are around 75 people working in the company. At production and installation level, we hire engineers. At sales level, we hire people with relevant qualification, he informs. Suggesting changes for the growth of the industry, Mr. Gadoo says, As such there is no government support for export of poultry products. An increase in export will help the industry to grow faster. Government should encourage farmers for further processing of poultry product and the same should be exported. We should learn from Brazil. India is their nipple drinking system. Lubing India has sold more than 20 million nipples in India, maintains Mr. Gadoo. Egg Conveyor System Egg conveyor systems eliminate intensive labor, automating the process of egg collection. Speaking about the benefits of egg conveyor system, Mr. Gadoo says, As average farm size is increasing in India, the egg conveyor has become a necessity as it not only saves labor, but also time. The eggs are collected at egg go-down and these can be easily distributed from there. He informs, We are currently working with Radha Sakku group for 3 million bird project in Orissa. The equipment has been tested successfully worldwide for last many years. emken India Agro Equipment Pvt. Ltd. is a 100% subsidiary of Lemken Gmbh, Germany, in corporated in 2010. It entered the Indian market in 1999 through joint venture with one of the Indian partners. In 2009 Lemken established its first in-house production plant in India. The company manufactures machinery for soil cultivation, sowing and plant protection. Lemken India is headquartered in Nagpur, Maharashtra. Lemken Gmbh & Co. KG. have been in business since last 230 years. The company is a leader in Europe in agro equipments. The company specializes in pre-harvesting agro equipments which are made of the latest technology, maintains Mr. Arvind Kumar, CEO and MD. Product Specialty : Speaking about the specialty of the products offered by Lemken, Mr. Arvind says, Some of the benefits include high precision in tillage, easy adjustments of implements for better results, suitability to various land conditions, long implement life, low maintenance costs, and more work in less time. All these contribute to the successful harvest of our customers crop and helping him increase his income. Lemken also offers customized products. Customization can be made possible based on tractor size, soil conditions, implement design, the crop to be cultivated, technological requirements and precision of cultivation, all contributing to the successful harvest for the farmer. It usually takes 2-12 weeks depending on the level of customization required, says Mr. Arvind. The hydraulic reversible ploughs introduced by Lemken in the Indian market is a popular product in that segment. When Indian farmers think about purchasing hydraulic
reversible plough the first choice is Lemken, he maintains. The mould board plough offered by Lemken is used to uproot the residues and turn the soil which results to increase the porosity level in the field for better retention of water. Lemken ploughs have been successful with all Indian crops, says Mr. Arvind. Market Share : When asked about their market share, Mr. Arvind says, Lemken started its operations in India by marketing its products in Maharashtra and north Karnataka. Technologically wise Lemken does not have any competitor in India. The market segments for our ploughs are different than the Indian manufacturers. We are in the process of expanding our network in all over India as well as for export. Production and Marketing Challenges : Mr. Arvind says, The main challenges faced by the company are availability of the raw material; skilled labour; and selling technology to Indian farmers as the initial cost of acquiring is expensive though ownership cost is much more beneficial. He adds, The Indian farmers are not well aware about the technological products available worldwide. They only depend on the local manufacturers in their area, which results in high maintenance cost and more fuel consumption rather than the advanced technological products. So we think Lemken can bring the evolution in the agriculture fields by providing the latest technological products to the farmers for better yield production. The total strength of Lemken India is 20. Our employee is expected to grow to 55 in coming months, says Mr. Arvind. Challenges Faced by Farming Community : Speaking about the chal-
lenges faced by the farming community India, Mr. Arvind points out, The agriculture industry faces a lot of challenges, which stifle its growth in matters from seed, water, labour and finance sourcing to post harvest crop storage and consistent crop procurement prices. Every step contributes to the escalating issue of the farmer not being able to earn to his and the farms full potential. He adds, The agriculture implement sector is unorganized which needs to be organized. There are so many local players in India which are not in the record yet. If anybody is having 2-3 machines he started his own production without any technology involvement. So we think farmers need to change their perceptions about the local manufacturers and should go for the technological products as the farmers are using in other countries. Thats the reason why the yield/ hectare of other countries is better than India. Quality Assurance : Assuring superior quality products, Mr. Arvind maintains, Lemken implements goes through rigorous quality checks starting from the raw material used, processes involved in manufacture and final calibration of the implement for best results. He adds, Quality being a major driver of our entire business operation, we ensure that we conform to highest standards of international quality in all our product offerings. We ensure the quality of the products by using advanced technological machineries in our production process. Careful and strict quality control, throughout from the grassroots level (raw material) to finished machines, to ensure technically perfect machines for the end user. We use the special steel with heat treatment and hardened, which is exclusively developed for Lemken and this result in a particularly high wear resistance of our components, so that you wont have to replace them so often as other local parts. Lemken parts have extraordinary fitting accuracy and simple, efficient and safe installation. He further adds, Lemken products focus on increasing the farmers income by providing technologically-advanced products that reduce the farmers cultivation time and labour expenses compared to other Indian manufactured ploughs. Emu Farming
The Report
n Tamil Nadu, a highly literate and industrialised state with a propensity to fall for ponzi schemes, one more investment scam seems to be brew ing. This time it centres around the emu, a large, flightless bird native to Australia and reputed to have as many uses as the wonder drug aspirin. Across the southern state, indications are that there is a steady build-up of what is essentially circular trading of emus, something that is usually a precursor to an eventual collapse. Advertisements on television, Internet and pamphlets are touting the bird as the ultimate in investment. Across Tamil Nadu indications are that there is a steady build-up of what is essentially circular trading of emus, something that is usually a precursor to an eventual collapse. Advertisements on television, internet and pamphlets are touting the bird as the ultimate in investment. Among those who fell for the spiel is Arjun, a 30-year-old software engineer from Chennai who bought 10 pairs of chicks investing Rs 2 lakh. He got his money back in two years, but now says there is something fishy about the whole scheme. If everyone is selling the bird not to the end consumer but to people who are getting into farming, it doesnt sound good, he says. Investment schemes for emus look remarkably similar to the ponzi rackets that have operated in the past. For an initial investment of, say, Rs 2 lakh for 20 pairs of chicks, an investor is promised total income of Rs 6.5 lakh in five years-essentially a triple your-money scheme. All an inve stor is sup-
posed to do is return the 20 pairs to the company promoting the scheme every year and take a new set. Emu farming is supposed to have debuted in India in the mid-1990s after emu slaugh-
Gujarat. It is in the past two years that the hype has grown. A farm owner near the hill station of Kodaikanal boasted that he has sold over 1.5 lakh emus so far. No order below 25 pairs of chicks is worth his while and payment has to be upfront.
aryana Emu Farms is based in Jagadhri, Haryana. The company was set up by Mr. Inder Pal Singh. He did a lot of research on emu farming by visiting various farms in different areas. They also went through the required training for choosing and rearing the genetically strong emu birds. There are 7 people working in the company, who were trained in-house. The client base of the company comprises poultry farmers. To reach the desired set of customers, we try to participate in events and exhibitions. We have our own website, where anyone can reach out to us and put in their enquiries. We reply to them by telephonically or by sending related e-mails, says Mr. Singh. The company is mainly targeting emu chicks, emu birds, emu meat and emu eggs. There is a huge demand for emu chicks in the Inder Pal Singh north. The company is focusing on emu meat market and we are very confident about the same in the region as the demand for red meat is huge up here, says Mr. Singh. He maintains that though emu is disease resistant, it requires care and effective sanitization. Water is not a big problem in our region. We get 24 hours water supply from the bore well. To store the water, we have special arrangements of plastic tanks in our farm and we do sanitize the same by adding chlorine or bleaching powder in it, informs Mr. Singh. In future the company is targeting the Indian Army where a lot of red meat is consumed daily. We believe, if only defense forces start consuming emu meat, it will be a huge success for emu industry. This would be even better for the defense to start emu meat for its great properties: 98% fat free, and enriched with high protein red meat. As soon as the big numbers of emu birds are being slaughtered for meat purpose, then we will think of marketing emu oil, says Mr. Singh. Mr. Singh is a commerce graduate from Kurukshetra University and has been into sales and marketing since 1998. His family has been into poultry farming for three generations. skin, and oil. People in AP are putting their hope on processing of emu meat but the market in India for emu meat is not large. People who were earlier into emu farming made money through selling of chicks to farmers who wanted to start emu farm. It went on like a networking business. But the real question in every emu farmers mind is, Where is the market? Where do I sell it? I would like government to intervene and help emu farmers find the market in India/abroad by exports and protect many marginal emu farmers who have invested lakhs of rupees
into it. Member Bharat says, Business such as poultry, dairy, goat raring often suffer due to various reason such as spread of infectious and contagious diseases which results in sudden fall in production. Emu is normally safe from all these adversities; hence Emu farming is recommended all over the world these days. In the first place this is a very fast growing business in the USA and now in India with a very high percentage of profit on investment. Emu can live in any kind of environment and adversities. This is a non-aggres-
olden Emu Farms was set up in 1998. It is based in Kuknoorpally village in Medak district, Andhra Pradesh and has its head office in Hyderabad. The company was founded by Mr. Nakkala Laxma Reddy, Mr. Bommena Bhoopathi Rao, Mr. Md. Muzaffar Ali, and Mr. Md. Usman. The annual turnover of the company was Rs. 3 crores. The main problem faced by the company was finding veterinary doctors specializing in emus. The main issue at that time was leg bending in emus, says Mr. Reddy, managing director. There are 40 employees working in the company. We trained some of our staff at ANGR Agricultural University of Hyderabad poul-
sive bird so it is easy to look after. The birds do not need special structures for their stay neither do they need large chunk of land. In one acre of area 100 to 150 emu can be quickly covered. Its an ecofriendly and highly effective business. Mr. Nakkala Laxma Reddy, managing director, Golden Emu Farms, Hyderabad, says, Due to growing awareness about the benefits of eating emu meat, which is healthy, its demand is increasing. Also, with the increasing acceptability of alternate medicine, emu oil (removed from the fat deposited below the surface of the skin) containing the pain-relieving oleic acid, and believed to be good for arthritis, has huge commercial potential. Emus can grow to be as tall as humans and weigh up to 60 kg. Related to ostriches, they can live for 40 years and are fertile for half that period. He adds, Emu is a golden goose-its meat, eggs, skin and even oil are all valuable. Emu meat is 98% fat free red meat rich in protein and iron, yet low in cholesterol. The fat is 43% monounsaturated, which helps lower the bad LDL cholesterol in the human body. Emu oil finds application in different industries and the resulting properties of compounds formulated with the oil. Traditionally emu oil has been used for treatment of muscle and joint pains, and also using in cosmetic products. Emu skin has been used in all leather products. Emu skin is very
Early Adopters
r. Ganesh Prajapat, executive direc tor, ACI Agro Solution, says, People rush towards every new venture. The crowd of investors comes and they quickly give a stamp of failure or success. These are early adopters. These people flock to a venture seeing the profit. In agriculture a lot of hidden costs
Other Reports
r. Prajapat quotes a news article in The Times of India, which says, Thousands of farmers, lured by private firms, have been queuing up to invest in emu farms in Salem and Erode in the hope
of making a quick buck, investing life savings or borrowing money to start a business. But the first signs of a bubble burst were evident at a grievance redressal meeting held in the city on Friday, when farmers complained they were suffering losses and were being cheated. Mr. Prjapat quotes another article titled Senior cop advices caution against investing in emu business. The article says, Police have warned the public not to be taken in by advertisements that make tall claims regarding emu farming in the region. Investors should be cautious before entering into emu rearing business. They should not be misguided by advertisement campaign, said Asra Garg, superintendent of police, Tirupur, on Tuesday. MU India Agro Pvt Ltd was established in 2007 in Mumbai. Mr. K. Suresh Kumar is the managing director of the company. The company started with 25 pairs of emu birds in 1 farm. Right now it has grown into 12 hatchery centres with production of more than 40000 chicks per year with more than 100 farmers. Speaking about pros and cos of emu farming, Mr. Suresh says, This is a new business with good profit and export opportunity. The disadvantage is the awareness of emu farming and emu products in India which helps some bogus companies give bogus promises to the farmers with extraordinary profit which is impossible in any business. We request farmers to check the background, marketing capacity, and genuineness of the company in which they are investing. Emu Indias target customers are farmers who are interested in emu farming. We already help hundreds of farmers to setup emu farm in different states of India. We have opened our branch in 8 states to give all services regarding emu farming to these farmers, says Mr. Suresh. Apart from rearing emu birds, the company
r. Reddy of Golden Emu Farms how ever says, Those interested in investing in livestock farming are choosing emu farming as the best option because it does not require infrastructure like sheds and all. Just plain land with fencing is enough. Businesses such as poultry, dairy, sheep or goat rearing or animal husbandry often suffer due to various factors such as eruption and spread of infectious and contagious diseases, resulting in sudden fall in production, climatic charges, excessive heat and scarcity of water. Emu is naturally immune to all these adversities hence emu farming is preferred all over the world today. Emu farming as a supplement to agriculture is going to be the most profitable business in the near future. Emu is a sober bird, living on grains, cereals, pulses and grass, its immune system is so strong that it hardly suffers from any disease. It survives in any type of climate. Each and every part of emus body is commercially valuable. Hence in India, emu farming is taking its roots. r. Prajapat also says. In agriculture there is no guarantee of profit. Anything can happen. Before going for any new venture one must research well and hire a consultant. The role of consultant should not be that of a deci-
Process to be followed
sion maker. His role must be of an information provider. Never hand over the task to him. Always complete the task yourself. One can follow the following process before going into any agriculture venture: 1. Can you dedicate you time to the venture as desired. 2. First study the detail about the cultivation or farming process. Find if there is any difference between the natural habitat and your proposed condition. 3. Then study the uses of the particular commodity and find out if such type of the industry, product in available freely in the market. 4. Try to find out if from where they source the material what are their requirement. Can you produce as per their quality specification?
Government Intervention
r. Prajapat further says, We cant ex pect everything from the government. It makes rules/regulation after the problem becomes severe. It is the investor or farmer who has to decide his action. Government encourages every new venture by providing subsidy. If emu farming is real business we need not worry. These financial frauds are part of the growth and development. Some unsocial agents come and create the problem. The government must ask the bank to give the feedback about the investment in emu farming, and then put the scheme in more systematic way. If there is opportunity in the export of emu products then that must be explored. None of the agriculture business is loss making if you are running it in a systematic way, then it will give you return. NABARD should also take feedback from their beneficiary regarding the success ratio of emu farming. Government must take the leading role. If it is loss making, put the immediate ban. The farmer has to take decision at their level. They have to think where they are investing the money. Mr. Reddy reiterates, Emu farming is a growing industry. Government has to promote emu farming, R&D should be done to develop a breed of emu birds in India. Agri universities should include emu birds in veterinary studies. There should be a dedicated slaughter house for emu birds. Training should be made available for emu farmers and emu hatcheries, machinery to extract oil out of emu fat should be subsidized, and best quality emu feed should be made available. Government has to encourage the emu farmers by providing interest free loans on emu farming, and subsidies on emu feed ingredients and electricity.
r. Inder Pal Singh joined the emu farm ing industry with his venture Haryana Emu Farm, a new addition to his family business of poultry farming. Haryana Emu Farm is based in Mukarbpur village in Yamuna Nagar District, Haryana. Before setting up the farm, Mr. Singh visited emu farms in Vijayawada, Andhra Pradesh to learn about emu farming. He also underwent required training for choosing and rearing genetically strong emu birds. The company supplies emu chicks, emu birds, emu meat and emu eggs. It mainly targets poultry farmers and consumers of red meat. There is a huge demand for emu chicks in northern India. Most buyers buy from us to rear emu for breeding purpose only. We are also focusing on emu meat market, says Mr. Singh. There are seven employees working on the farm. The company trains its staff in-house. The company participates in agri fairs and events held by sugar mills, co-op banks, agricultural universities or veterinary doctors meets, to promote emu farming.
ember Dgawale wants to start live stock management and is considering emu farming as a secondary option. He asks about the pros and cons of emu farming. He expresses his concern, Even if everything is ok with emu farming the main concern about this is the market. Where do we sell our emu birds, meat, feathers and other byproducts because in India people are not yet aware of emu. Also how can we capture the international market for it. Mr. Singh replies, Emu farming is basically divided into two types: First it is to source eggs from a breeding farm, and the second is to raise emu for various products/ meat market. The best and easy way is to go with the first option, where you keep quality emu birds at your farm, take very good care of them and get quality fertile eggs. Sell these eggs to the local hatchery. Generally your emu birds suppliers will buyback those eggs. You will get good profit by selling those eggs, as good fertile eggs can be easily sold for anywhere between Rs.1000-1500. Else you can always start selling emu chicks by putting up an in-house
emu hatchery too. These days there is huge demand for emu chicks in various states. So before purchasing the birds always ask your supplier about the buyback agreement of eggs or check with the local hatcheries, if they are having demand for the same. The second option is also good, but it really depends whether you have any emu slaughter house nearby or not, as they will buy your live bird ageing about 12-18 months and weighing more than 35Kg. As I have heard, they pay something ranging between Rs.250-300 per kg of your livestock. So far as the other emu byproducts are concerned, only a slaughter house can sell them as they have the required quantity of each product like feather, leather and nails.
Financial Assistance
nother member Eswar Reddy is inter ested in starting an emu farm with 50 pairs of 3 months old emu chicks. He wants to know, How much investment is required until the first laying including other expenses like hatchery machine, farm development cost, fencing and room generator, where we can sell emu chicks or eggs. Is emu farming going to be a profitable business in future? Would any bank provide loan as well as subsidiary for emu farming this financial year 2012-2013 I discussed with NABARD district employees and was told that now no subsidiary is available. Mr. Singh replies, Investment in emu farming depends on the total number of pairs you bought, feeding cost till laying starts, labor and other expenses. Price of 3 month & Industry Survey
bhivirthi Emu Firm is located in Dindigul district, Tamil Nadu. Mr. Vidyasankar N is the proprietor of the company. I was working as senior engineer in an MNC abroad. I was caught amidst the global crisis in between 2007 2009. One of my friends who had a farm abroad guided me through profit and loss in emu business, informs Mr. Vidyasankar. Speaking about the initial research done before setting up the company, Mr. Vidyasankar says, Lots of groundwork had to be done. I got the books regarding emu farming and memorized all the facts and visited a number of farms all over India and met higher officials in NABARD and then prepared a project report with the help of an auditor and the officials. I got a loan from the bank for this project. It took me eight months to start my business. Now I am doing this full time. The company sells emu meat and emu oil. Emu is highly disease resistant but Mr. Vidyasankar warns, All living organisms are susceptible to some kind of disease. Emu is no exception. Cleanliness and inadequate care towards the birds make them ill. The major challenges faced by the company included lack of qualified veterinary doctors specializing in emu, and lack of government support to spread awareness about emu meat. He suggests people considering taking up emu farming to research well. Do not invest unless you are confident you can sustain for three years without any income from emu, he warns. Mr. Vidyasankar has done master of science in civil engineering and bachelor of engineering in computer science. Provide stress free environment to the isolated birds. See they eat and drink, if off feed-force feed and give water 3 to 4 times a day to prevent dehydration and death. Use antibiotics for the bacterial infections and infected wounds after cleaning and disinfections. Vaccinate the birds to protect from certain diseases. Dispose off dead birds properly.
old emu chicks could be anywhere between Rs. 7000 10,000 per pair. Feeding cost till they start laying will be about Rs.8000 per pair. Hatchery machines come with different capacity ranging from 180 eggs to 2400 eggs and the cost of the same is ranging between Rs.60 000 6,00,000. Generator of 7.5 to 15 KVA is required for power back up. You need to make your own space in the emu market in your respective state. There are so many banks here in our state who are lending for emu farming and of course NABARD is providing subsidy of 25%33% on the same.
Preventing Diseases
nother member skvengali asks about the possibility of loss and asks about the precautions to be taken. Senior member Ashwini replies, The only problem you might face is the lack of space since 5 pairs of emus need at least 3000 square feet of area as they have a tendency to kick their feet and get aggressive with the other birds. The other factor you need to take care is the birds should not get affected by any pest or diseases. Mr. Vidyasankar of Abhivirthi Emu Firm suggests methods to prevent diseases in emu: Isolate the sick and injured birds, for exAgriculture & Industry Survey - Vol. 22, Issue 8 - 2012 - 36
r. Ramu from Bangalore also wants to start emu farming with 30 pairs of emu chicks in Kolar. He also wants to know, Is it good business for future; what is the cost for 30 pairs of emu birds including cost for storage, feed per year, and transport; is any bank providing loans for this in Karnataka; where can I sell emu eggs, meat and other byproducts; which company provides emu birds (3 months), feed, and other infrastructural requirement; he also wants detailed project report on emu farming. Mr. Singh maintains emu farming is good business. Cost of birds depends on their age, so be very specific about the age of the birds as chicks will start laying after 15-18 months or else you can opt fully grown birds which will lay eggs this year too. On an average, adult pair of emu consumes feed of about Rs.8000-10,000 per year. He adds, I have no idea about the banks in Karnataka who are providing such loans, but can discuss it with any nationalized bank. Market for eggs is the main concern of the business, so check it with your local emu suppliers and ask them about buy back agreement of eggs if they have any. For 3 month old emu chicks always prefer a reliable and your nearest emu hatchery so that they can guide you in rearing chicks and can buy back the emu eggs. Another member wanted information about starting emu farming in Andhra Pradesh. Member G. A. Rao says, Emu farming in Andhra Pradesh is gaining more popularity. Emu farming proposals are covered under ongoing venture capital fund scheme for poultry sponsored by NABARD. The total unit cost is Rs.30 lakhs for 50 pairs. Subsidy amount of Rs.7.50 lakhs will be given by the NABARD. The applicant will be charged interest on Rs.19.50 lakhs only out of Rs.27.00 lakhs of initial loan sanctioned to him. The capital cost and recurring costs for 50 pairs emu birds will be around Rs. 30 lakhs. Out of which recurring expenditure will be Rs. 8.62 16.95 lakhs in the years to come (including interest portion included in the expenditure). Shed, fencing, pen area like structures costs about Rs.5.95 lakhs, cost of machinery will be Rs.3.55 lakhs and cost of 3 months old hicks will be Rs.7.50 lakhs. An amount of Rs. 13 lakhs is ear marked for feeding the birds. The party is capable of meeting the expenditure of maintenance of birds over and above the project cost. The surplus income on the farm is estimated at the pre-
will be around Rs.8000. The bird weighs about 35 to 40 Kgs. Each bird will fetch about Rs.12000 to 13000. Hence, farmers will not incur any losses if they rear under fattening scheme also and in maintenance of emu hatchery in future. Surplus income on the Emu farm will be about Rs. 12.00 to 29.00 lakhs in the coming years and farmers are capable of repaying the loan installments out of the income on the farm in the subsequent years. identified as a bacterium known as XanthomonasOxanopodpvPunicea. This bacterium can infect fruits, leaves and stems. Initially it appears as oily spots on leaves or fruits. It grows very fast, within 48 to 78 hours. R.B. Herbal Agro also conducted studies to determine when the disease was most common. Weather plays a large part in the occurrence of epidemics. The incidences of the disease are less common in the winter season but increase during the rainy season. The most favorable condition for the growth of these bacteria is high humidity more than 65 % RH and a temperature range of 28 to 320C. It grows slowly at temperatures below 150C. It appears more in the rainy season when the temperature is 320C 350C. These bacteria rarely breed in the winter season. When the disease has progressed, there are various ways to identify it. One simple way to detect the disease is when a Y shaped crack appears on the fruit. Black spots and decaying leaves are also other symptoms. On the stem, it appears as a black spot with an oozing type wound leading to a dead arm.
r. Shankar Reddy of Raichur is a pome granate farmer having more than 3000 trees in his orchard, which is 7 years old. He has been fighting bacterial blight from past 4 years. He wanted more information to control the disease. After extensive research and studies, R.B. Herbal Agro along with M.P.K.V. Rahuri has developed a solution for the disease. It is called Char Sutri Karyakram or the Four Point Program, which helps prevent the spread of the disease. The four points are: 1. Cleanliness helps to reduce inoculums 2. Horticultural practices involves determining when to start seasons and determining how many fruits will grow on a plant. 3. Fertilization keeps the pomegranate healthy through organic manure. 4. Scheduled sprays for disease control helps control the growth of the bacteria. Mr. Patil recommends the following spray: Prophyalexin 3 Ml + Cop-E 0.4 Gm Per litre of water R. B. Bordo 2.5 Gm + Sulfer 2 Gm Per litre of water Prophyalexin 3 Ml + PMBS 2.5 Gm Per litre of water Xanthonashak 0.5 Gm + R. B. Bordo 2.5 Gm Per litre of water Pseudo-FL 5 2 Ml + 5 Litres of Milk Per litre of water Mr. Patil explained additional research for better yield saying, We have studied and gathered data on the role of potassium and

nitrogen on Bacterial Blight. We also found that biofertilizer is a useful tool to control bacterial blight. Optimum levels of N & K are required in the plant tissue to fight against bacterial blight. Mr. Patil recommends a suitable INM programme to have a higher yield without any incidence of the disease. When pointed out that in Chile pomegranate is treated with methyl bromide to protect the fruit from certain invasive pests, Mr. Patil says, Methyl bromide is a banned chemical since it is harmful for reducing ozone layer one should not use it for any purpose. Member Mr. Hiren Pancholi appreciates all the information on controlling bacterial blight of pomegranate. He says, We have recently promoted a product called anthium dioxcide from DuPont, which is a biocide, kills bacteria, spores, virus, fungus and algae. It was tried out at a half acre pomegranate farm in Solapur area and results were very good. Fruits were not bursting after using anthium dioxcide and only thing was that there was only oily spot at the bottom of the fruits. I am interested to carry out some professional trial to further continue with the positive result received at Solapur. Mr. Patil recommends giving the material for trials to MPKV Rahuri. Dr Raghuvanshi is a person working on this problem, he informs.

Also farmers are fed up with the use of chemicals and fertilizers to control either root or any other disease. He adds, Farmers are facing huge losses with the production cost of pomegranate going sky high and low market value for their produce. In order to address such heavy losses, it is necessary to improve soil health along with plant health with locally available techniques and ingredients to control any problem either in the soil or in the plant. Commodity Trading
io Care Technology, a company in the agricommodity industry, dealing in agricultural exports and supplies was established in November of 2010 in the Dindigul district of Tamil Nadu. With the advice of NABARD and wasteland development schemes, Bio Care Technology markets various species of plants and medicinal seeds. The company now operates under the watchful eye of its managing director, Mr. Suriya Praganantham, a Management of Science BBA graduate with six years of experience as an agricultural marketing field Adviser. Products and Acquisitions Dealing in the export of fresh vegetables and fruits while also supplying horticultural plants, medicinal plants and seeds, the company has now expanded to taking care of contract farming of horticultural, medicinal and forestry plants. Among the many items exported by the company is the banana g9 while one of the horticultural items manufactured by the company is an organic mixer that entails the use of bio concepts. All of the companys products are sold under the name Queen Brand. In the growing of their various plant species, the company purchases seeds from accredited and praised seed companies as well as the best seed collection agents in all of India. From time to time, the company also sources their seeds from the government sector. When asked about their annual turnover, Mr. Suriya shared, Our annual turnover is Rs. Ten lacs only. Quality Control As a company that supplies and exports to various locations, quality control is one of the most important parts of the companys daily routines. For example, with bananas being one of the main export goods of Bio Care Technology, a lot of care goes into ensuring that customers only receive the best of their products. We need to take care of the size and weight of fruits, packing materials, and [the way the products are packed, Mr. Suriya shared. Even ripening periods, frozen shipment containers and housekeeping have to be well managed on a daily basis to make sure that the fruits meet the standards for export.
Because export standards are so high, it is difficult for the company accept outside suppliers. For example, if a spice powder maker wishes to supply to Bio Care Technology, the company will send an initial inquiry. The company will also require samples and quality certificates. Only after a detailed search of the suppliers information and a visit to the suppliers area of operation will a decision be made. Target Market and Competition Bio Care Technology looks to big importers as their main market and though they have not yet received finalized orders internationally, countries such as Iran and South Africa have already shown interest in the companys products. To properly meet the demands of the domestic and international market, the company goes through e-mail inquiries and also surveys the prices of products and percentages. Identifying companies such as Mahalakshmi Exports and Stone Color Exports as some of their main competitors, Mr. Suriya still maintains that their products have an edge over the competing brands. He said, Our products are number one in the industry because we maintain the quality of our products [and] our growers are qualified [people]. Challenges As it continues to engage in the agricultural exports industry, Bio Care Technology has faced its fair share of challenges. With regard to the toughest problem faced by
Suriya Praganantham the company so far, Mr. Suriya identified payments as its main challenge. Most of the payment problems come from customers. We think that [honest] customers are [hard to find] and we are searching [for them continuously], said Mr. Suriya. Another issue is the lack of proper warehouse facilities in India. This issue is prevalent nation wide and has even been addressed in the news. Mr. Suriya acknowledged this problem saying, Warehouses must be available for all agro products and agri products. Growing produce is Gods gift and we should save the product and [be able to properly supply these products] when demanded or when natural calamities occur. Advice and Future Plans With the company operating smoothly, Mr. Suriya described the future plans of Bio Care Technology rather succinctly as he said, Our company should hold the number one position for supply of products. Seeing as the company has already done very well thus far, becoming widely acknowledged as a trusted distributor of agricultural products, it would seem that the company has a very bright future ahead of them. The company, however, has shown a willingness to help other companies thrive in the industry and Mr. Suriya willingly shared a few pieces of advice. Customers are the most important part of the business, Mr. Suriya shared, Technical people should be trained to get more ideas from other leading countries. ven though the overall agriculture sector is expected to do well in 2012-13, the major crop production is projected to fall by 0.5 per cent, the economic think-tank Centre for Monitoring Indian Economy (CMIE) said. Major crop production is projected to decline in 2012-13 by 0.5 per cent, owing to a fall in output of nonfood crops like soyabean, cotton and rapeseed, the CMIE said in its monthly report. Cotton production is expected to fall 7.8 per cent to 32.2 million bales in 2012-13 even though the acreage rose over 12 per cent to 29.3 lakh hectares by June. We expect the cultivation to slow down and settle at a level lower than last year. Hence, a fall in acreage is expected to limit production in 2012-13, it added. The city-based research agency said that a projected growth in output of livestock, forestry and fisheries, along with a modest 4 per cent rise in production of minor crops, is expected to lift growth of the agriculture sector to 2.4 per cent in 2012-13. The kharif cultivation of foodgrains and oilseeds has been sluggish due to delayed rains. To boost the cultivation of these crops, the Centre had announced a steep increase in their minimum support price (MSP) last month.

NEWS IN BRIEF - Latest news and developments Farm production needs to rise 60% by 2050: UN agency
orld farm production must rise 60 percent by 2050 to meet the needs of a growing population but this has to happen in "a more sustainable way," the UN food agency FAO and the OECD said. "It's mostly going to be about productivity," Angel Gurria, head of the Organisation for Economic Cooperation and Development (OECD), said at a press conference in Rome, explaining that farmland area would increase only slightly. World farm production has grown at 2.0 percent a year in recent decades but the rate is expected to slow to 1.7 percent a year, the joint report said. Despite the slowdown, the rate is to exceed expected demographic growth, meaning that farm output per inhabitant will grow by 0.7 percent a year. Setia. He expected farmers to switch to basmati as the planting goes on till August 10. Also, better returns from basmati may aid the trend as prices have shot up by almost 60 per cent over last year, Mr Setia said. Last year, basmati rice was planted on about 15.5 lakh hectares in Punjab, Haryana and Uttar Pradesh. Clove : This is an internationally traded spice! Delhi. In the producing countries, the prices reported to have dropped to $7,500 a tonne which means the landed cost will come to Rs 475 Rs 500 a kg, upcountry market sources say. If the current trend is any indication, the prices are likely to drop to Rs 350 a kg very soon, they claimed. Sellers overseas are waiting for India to buy, but it will not happen as many are holding stocks bought earlier at high prices, they said. The Indonesian crop this year is estimated to be at around 90,000 tonnes and the crop is expected to arrive in the markets next month. The prices have now dropped to $7,500 a tonne and that is likely to gradually fall to $6,000 a tonne. The Cigar companies are said to be waiting for prices to drop to such levels, they said. Indonesian government is reported to have banned imports of cloves, to safeguard the local farmers and so that the cigar companies would buy from farmers. This step will be a big blow to international cloves trader farmers, as the biggest buyer will be out of the markets, they pointed out. India is estimated to have a stock of over 3,000 tonnes. The Indian output last season was at around 1,400 tonnes, according to growers in Nagercoil region of Tamil Nadu. The growers in Tamil Nadu and Kerala have

against Rs 10,578 crore in 201011. In dollar terms, the export growth was 29 per cent at $3.22 billion against $2.49 billion last year, said Mr A. K. Gupta, Advisor, Agriculture and Processed Foods Exports Development Authority (Apeda). The lower growth in dollar is due to a weak rupee. In the current financial year, too, exporters hope to sustain the growth momentum on robust demand. At present, exports are around 3,00,000 tonnes a month, said Mr Anil Mittal, Chairman and Managing Director of KRBL, the countrys largest exporter, which owns the India Gate brand. Iran, Saudi Arabia and the United Arab Emirates were the three large export markets during 2011-12, Mr Gupta said. Non-basmati exports have also kept the same pace as the aromatic rice. Their shipments have exceeded 5 million tonnes so far. Total rice shipments, including both basmati and non-basmati, were 7.3 mt in 2011-12, making India the largest rice exporter, said Mr Vijay Setia, former President of All-India Rice Exporters Association. The truant monsoon has slowed planting of non-basmati varieties in North India as the sowing period is almost over, said Mr

Indian consumption is estimated at 12,000 15,000 tonnes and the country is a major consumer of cloves and as the normal indigenous production is estimated at somewhere between 1,500 2,000 tonnes. he two-day World Sustain able Agriculture Congress got under way in Singapore. The conference is designed to bring together the global corporate sector involved in the food value chain, including agribusiness, academics, and policymakers to discuss the solutions needed to achieve sustainable agriculture for future food security, according to the organisers. Among the speakers, some have India as their research and working base. Mr Partha R. Das Gupta, Principal Advisor, Agronomy, Syngenta Foundation for Sustainable Agriculture of India, has been working in the country for a long time. Since 2005, he has been running a number of projects aimed at strengthening the livelihood security of small farmers through the transfer of appropriate technologies. Several of the models and approaches first tried out with the projects in India were later adopted by other Syngenta Foundation projects in Africa and Asia. He is active in agricultural research and extension to

he worst U.S. drought since Ronald Reagan was president is withering the worlds largest corn crop, and the speed of the damage may spur the government to make a record cut in its July estimate for domestic inventories. Tumbling yields will combine with the greatest-ever global demand to leave U.S. stockpiles on Sept. 1, 2013, at 1.216 billion bushels (30.89 million metric tons), according to the average of 31 analyst estimates compiled by Bloomberg. Thats 35 percent below the U.S. Department of Agricultures June 12 forecast, implying the biggest reduction since at least 1973. The USDA updates its harvest and inventory estimates July 11. The drought is much worse than last year and approaching the 1988 disaster, said John Cory, the chief executive officer of Rochester, Indiana-based grain processor Prairie Mills Products LLC. Corn rallied 18 percent in the month through July 6 on the Chicago Board of Trade to $6.93, trailing only wheat among 24 commodities tracked by the Stan-

U.S. Drought Monitor in Lincoln, Nebraska, began tracking the data in 2000. In the seven days ended July 6, temperatures in the region averaged as much as 15 degrees Fahrenheit above normal. Soil moisture in Illinois, Indiana, Ohio, Missouri and Kentucky is so low that it ranks in the 10th percentile among all other years since 1895. Fields are parched just as corn plants began to pollinate, a critical period for determining kernel development and final yields. About 48 percent of the crop in the U.S., the worlds largest grower and exporter, was in good or excellent condition as of July 1, the lowest for that date since 1988 and down from 77 percent on May 18, government data show. Corn yields were falling five bushels a day during the past week in the driest parts of the Midwest, said Fred Below, a plant biologist at the University of Illinois in Urbana.

turing. The Japanese are interested that the cars made in India be exported, he said. However, he said the proposed southern corridor has several gaps, the main one being goods getting held up in Chennai and Ennore ports. Importantly, there needs to be smooth movement of goods produced in Karnataka to ports in the South. Official level talks have come to the conclusion that there is little scope to develop a dedicated freight corridor or a high-speed container train lane in the South like in the case of DMIC or even in the proposed eastern corridor. Therefore, the aim now is to reduce logistics costs in the region by moving goods fast through an 8-10 lane highway from different parts, including Karnataka, to ports in Tamil Nadu. Meanwhile, the development of an eastern corridor is being considered mainly keeping in mind the farm belt.

most simple reason, those who are going to implement the PMcum_FM's thoughts, not to say they are in what ways any wellthought out new policies? Back to Salman Kurshid. The law minister also spilled the other beans. He said the PM couldnt show the direction nor might not be so efficient this time. So let us bring in the star, Rahul Gandhi who, Kurshid said candidly so far played a cameo role. Small roles, now and then. So, we have to wait for the star, Rahul, till he is ready to take over. Came the reactions from the Opposition immediately.
Yes, we have sufficient food stocks, so the availability and the prices could be managed, inflation could be kept under tight leash? There is no such deep reflections from the ministers, bureaucrats nor from the party headquarters. So, who is talking of these weighty matters?
The BJP spokesperson, Ravi Shankar Prasad, said the ruling party at last acknowledged the fact that Rahul is nowhere now and he is in no mood to assume the leadership of the party or the government. But came the reactions of other parties, with some ideological backgrounds like the SP. The SP spokesperson, Shahid Siddiqui said that Rahul has no leadership qualities, nor has he any ideological moorings. What does that mean? It means a lot of things. Even Kurshid almost said the Congress party has no ideological focus. The party doesnt have any core belief system. It must have an ideology, after all. This, the party now lost out to various forces that are anything but core belief systems. Of course, the Congress party immediately tried to rebut the Opposition attack but it was very muted. To be frank, the very Congress party itself is now depleted of any talents. What it is left with are all opportunists or at worst sycophants.
he two global agencies, one UN agency, one FAO and the other, Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD) have come out with new perspectives on the world scenario and the food needs of a world population. FAO head, JosenGraziano, OECD head, Angel Gurria said in Rome the other day that by 2050 world would be needing something like 605 more food production to sustain the population and growth of the world economy. They are all hopeful that this goal can be achieved. How? World farm production has been growing at two per cent per year! In recent decades this seems to be the more optimistic big picture story! But at the same time, the rate is now expected to slow to something like 1.7 per cent a year. But despite the slowdown the farm production rate is expected to be ahead of the demographic growth rate. Then, there is, as the agencies say, vast spaces of land in Latin America and Carribean and sub-Saharan Africa to raise the productivity of agricultural lands. Why, even in India the scope for raising farm productivity is immense. Unfortunately, so far in India agriculture sector production is only our focus, productivity is not year a focus, to say the least. See the wasteful ways, the wasteful uses of water, land, why even energy,

extent that corruption goes unpunished in India while it is punished in a ruthless manner in China. This applies to both politics and corporate sectors. While in India except for the recent high profile and large scale 2G corruption scandal where many big corporates and the high profile ministers and party MPs were thrown into jail for long time. How the polity and the economy would transform themselves into one of opportunities for the younger generation? There seems to be no clear answer. An observer notes that our current leadership, mostly drawn from the older age groups are unwilling to learn any lessons from the contemporary world, namely from the contemporary economies and societies. As on date there is a concern about the worldwide slowdown. Is the recession over? No one has pronounced any clearer answer.
