What our students say

03

I really enjoyed the Bridge course here in Cardiff University. I attended the course from September to June. It really helped me to prepare both for academic skills and IELTS. Regarding the former, not only could I practise academic writing and prepare presentations, but also I was given good feedbacks that really helped to improve. Concerning the latter, the classes are well organized and improve all the skills required to success in IELTS. Teachers consider every student and help to reveal weaknesses of each so that students can focus more on them and improve significantly. Feedbacks that are given by teachers are really helpful and well-organized. Overall, I firmly believe that the Bridge course is a good way to become rounded both for a university and IELTS.

drawing on relevant and entertaining supplementary materials current news articles, magazines and periodicals, television shows, videos and IT. The syllabus varies according to which course you study so that we meet the different needs of for example a student about to start a postgraduate degree programme at Cardiff University or someone improving his or her General English for career reasons.

Over 120 years of teaching experience

Cardiff University has been successfully educating students since 1883. You can be certain that we have learned a lot in that time. Recently, 21 of our academic subject areas were independently assessed as Excellent for teaching. This spirit of excellence carries over into all our departments, and our English language teaching is no exception.

Entry assessment and regular monitoring

During the first week of any course, we use a standard placement exam and course-specific testing techniques to determine your English language abilities in listening, reading, speaking and writing. You will be assessed even if you have an IELTS score or equivalent. This allows us to place you in classes with students who have similar needs, allowing you to maximise your learning and ensuring you feel challenged but not overwhelmed.

Intensive language and cultural studies

To become fluent in another countrys language, you must also be fluent in its culture. We concentrate on developing essential language skills (grammar, reading, writing, listening and speaking) using taskbased activities, current events and British themes such as literature, history, culture, education and art where appropriate. This means that you learn to use and speak English in everyday real-life situations whether at University, in the workplace, with friends, in shops, in restaurants or at home.

Seminars
These are smaller discussion groups of three to ten students led by tutors. This is an ideal time to discuss any questions after lectures and an opportunity to fully understand the subjects you are studying.

Professional teaching you can count on

Your motivation and our teaching expertise are the keys to your success in learning English. As one of the UKs leading universities, our teaching methods are proven to work. Our teachers hold specialist qualifications in Teaching English as a Foreign or Second Language and understand the language and study requirements of the British higher education system. Many have first-hand experience of living in a different country and studying another language. But most important of all, our teachers are committed to creating a vibrant teaching and learning community.

Tutorials
You can arrange to meet any tutor to discuss any aspect of the course. For example, if there is something you did not understand in a lecture or seminar, or if you want to discuss the progress of your project or essay or any other topic you want to talk about. All students are encouraged to speak individually to their tutors if they have any questions or problems; your tutor will always be pleased to see you and happy to help.

Teaching and learning methods

The course employs a variety of teaching methods, all chosen to deliver the tuition you need in the best possible way.

Lectures
Lectures are classes given to large groups of students. Lectures allow you to gain a comprehensive base of knowledge. Lecturers make use of a range of resources and facilities to provide the information you need. During lectures, you will be given written material (handouts), information about exams and essays, and multi-media presentations. You may even find that you are invited to give your own presentation.

Official recognition
Once your English language course is finished, you will receive an official Cardiff University Attendance Certificate. It is proof of your time with us and makes an excellent addition to your CV - demonstrating to future employers your new language abilities as well as your initiative and independence. .
