Developing a Strong Research Culture at JKSHIM: A Concept Note

1. Integrate research into the curricula a. Include peer reviewed research papers I legitimate journals as learning materials b. Introduce a primary research based micro-project and a literature review based term paper as components of the internal evaluation scheme c. Launch a publically searchable online repository of these student projects and papers d. Faculty may consider co-publication (with the students as first authors and also acknowledging JKSHIM affiliations) of some of these projects and papers in relevant external media. i. In particular, the finding may be de-terminologized and published in the popular media. 2. Management in Action (MIA) a. Among other things, MIA should be recognized as an important source for writing teaching case studies. With an extra amount of additional effort, MIA reports can be refashioned into case studies. (I have noticed that MIA projects typically explore a wide range of issues spanning across functional divisions and the business environment. Thus, case studies prepared out of MIA case studies might be best suited to be included as part of a senior level capstone course touching across different areas of business studies). After anonymizing and with the permission of the organizations concerned, these case studies could also be published in the form of books, branded with NITTE-JKSHIM. 3. Faculty Research a. The School should develop and communicate in positive terms how it values research i. Clarify how faculty research would be incentivized 1. Incentives for outcome (such as publication in an impactful journal, best paper award in a conference, etc) 2. Incentives for process (such as seed fund for research, provision of student research assistants, support for conference attendance, etc) 3. Research including: a. Journal articles, book reviews in journals b. Editing journals / books, contributing chapters in books

c. Weekly faculty presentations about the current state of their disciplines / own research d. Conference presentations and publications e. Organizing research events, such as conferences f. Institutional research supporting assessment and accreditation b. Institutional training support to enhance faculty research i. Funds for organizing training programs on campus 1. Training programs on research methods, analytical techniques, etc. ii. Funds for faculty participating training programs off-campus 4. Need for a Focus Strategy for Research a. Identify ONE focus area for special thrust research, for thought and action leadership through research, which resonates with the vision and mission of the NITTE trust. b. Given our small size and uniqueness of location, focus strategy might work better. c. Community oriented action research could become a unique anchor for JKSHIMs research efforts. i. An IRMA like institution for South India? d. Finally, this does not mean the School would demotivate anyone with a different, even irreconcilable research direction. 5. Generate Funds via Research a. Research based consulting b. Organizing research training programs for outstation candidates c. Subscription revenue from JKSHIM publications 6. Develop a Social Media Strategy for Research Communication a. Facebook, twitter, and blogs could be used for communication and brand building. b. Faculty-researchers should give special attention to ensure that the key message of their research reaches the non-academic, non-technical audience, who are some of our biggest stakeholders.
