In The newS
 THE Duke of Westminster has become a grandfather. His eldest daughter Lady Tamara
Grosvenor gave birth to son Jake last month at St Mary’s Hospital, Paddington. He weighed
8lb 12 oz.

 HANDBRIDGE’S Lucy Adams has been crowned Miss Chester 2009.

Twenty-year-old Lucy, who lives in Castle View, was among 12 finalists at the Crowne Plaza
Hotel, each of whom had to wear recycled clothing for the final round of judging.
The university student chose a 50-year-old ball gown which she had bought from Oxfam.
She will now progress to the semi-final stage of the Miss England contest.

 AN old steam boat built in Saltney should be returned from South America, according to
town councillor Klaus Armstrong Braun.
He wants the RH Carr vessel, which is now resting in British Guyana, to be brought back
and made into a local tourist attraction.

 CHILDREN at Overleigh St Mary’s are aiming to stay safe on the roads by taking part in
Bikeability, the new national cycle training scheme.
They have also used their bikes for an African Biking Breakfast to raise money for the
school gardens and a cheetah sanctuary in South Africa.

 HANDBRIDGE FLOWER CLUB

AT this month’s meeting on Thursday 18th June, the group welcome national
demonstrator Janet Hayton, from York, who has chosen “Inspired by...” as the subject of
her demonstration. The members’ competition title is “Wine and Roses.” New members
welcome. Visitors £4.

 ARCHAEOLOGISTS and students are working together on a month-long excavation

designed to unearth vital clues to the history of Chester’s Grosvenor Park from the Roman
period to the Civil War.
This year’s project will focus on a trench at the eastern end of the park near St John’s
Church, in the grounds of the former Lord Cholmondeley’s mansion, badly damaged during
the Civil War.

 HANDBRIDGE is back to its full

complement of pubs with the re-opening
of the Ship Inn. The building has been
closed for a number of years, with many
locals wondering if it would ever return.
This means that people have an enviable
choice of hostelries to choose from: the
Carlton, the Handbridge, the Grosvenor
Arms (Clubby’s), the Ship and the Bar
and Courtyard (Red Lion)

QPHS on shortlist for
school of the year
QUEEN’S Park High School has been invited to attend a prestigious awards ceremony
month as a result of beingshortlisted for the Secondary School of the Year Award.
Organised by the Times Educational Supplement (TES), the awards look beyond
traditional methods of measuring a school’s success.
Queen’s Park is one of six schools included in the final shortlist for the Secondary
School of the Year category based on their stunningly successful year in 2008.
Achievements picked out by the judges were:
A good Ofsted inspection, becoming North West Young Enterprise School of the Year,
every student gaining at least one GCSE, a £2 million refurbishment and the reduction in
absences.
Head teacher Andrew Firman said :“I am delighted the judges have recognised the great
progress our school has made. This is a tribute to the whole staff team, working closely
with our young people and with the support of their parents and our governors. I hope
everyone will keep their fingers crossed for us when we attend the event in London - a
bit like the Oscars for schools!”

Sun SenSITIvITY
And MedIcATIOn
DAMAGE caused by certain medications in
conjunction with unprotected sun exposure
can be anything from mild redness to an
extreme reaction resulting in hospitalisation.
Unfortunately, although recovery is good in
the short term, the long term effects can
be devastating in later life.
Antibiotics such as tetracycline’s
are prescribed for acne sufferers,
successfully killing the bacteria
associated with acne. These
antibiotics are part of a group that
can trigger sun sensitivity to the
skin.
Roaccutane is another popular
treatment for acne. It thins the
skin all over the body, so a high
SPF must be applied to any areas
that are to be exposed to the
sun at all times, not just when
sunbathing. The high SPF should
be continued for at least 6 months
after the treatment has ceased,
whilst the body’s skin reverts to its normal thickness.
Even herbal remedies are not immune to the problem. St. Johns Wort the popular
anti-depressant also causes sun sensitivity.
Sun bed users this applies to you, too! If you are an acne sufferer and taking
medication please take the necessary precautions.
When prescribed any medication, to be taken orally or used topically, do ask your
pharmacist about sun sensitivity. Do read labels and information accompanying the
treatment.
We all know sun burn leads to sun damage later in life and unfortunately skin cancer
for some. Either cover up well or use at least SPF 30 to be safe.

PODIATRIC
biomechanical research
has shown over the past
couple of decades that a
fair list of musculoskeletal
pains may be caused (or
worsened) by the way we
stand and walk.
Try and visualise this example: a
person has flat feet. This means
their feet roll inward when standing
and weight-bearing. This in turns
causes - or exagerates - some degree of a ‘knock-knee’ condition. The knock-knee then changes
the ‘Q’ angle of the thigh, affecting the hip angle and lower back.
If we walk through the days, months and years with poor lower limb mechanics, we contribute to
‘wear and tear’ in all the wrong places.
So what can be done?
A vast array of health professionals can point you in the right direction these days. Your regular
Chiropractor, physiotherapist, etc will all be able to provide treatment for symptomatic pain in your
knees, hips, etc... But a podiatric opinion is also essential.
Many Podiatrists (Chiropodists) have undertaken further specialist training in biomechanics. This
means that if you book a ‘biomechanical assessment’ with a podiatrist, you will have an expert
opinion on your foot structure, mechanics and walking style from someone who has studied the
feet and lower limbs for years.
What happens then?
If your biomechanical assessment reveals a problem, your podiatrist will recommend some
exercises and most notably, some tailor made orthotic insoles.
Such ‘orthotics’ are not the simple arch support or gel ‘footbeds’ as retailed in shoes shops and
chemists.
They are a specific prescription, made to measure for you (and guaranteed for life). They are made
from a mould of your feet, and have extra features and
posts to subtly correct your feet and legs... and the way you walk.
Generic orthotics as sold in shops may not be the prescription/insole you require for your needs -

THE BUDGET – CHALLENGES
AND OPPORTUNITIES
FINANCIAL COLUMN BY SIMON DANGAR

In a Budget which Chancellor Alistair Darling said

was designed to take Britain through the most serious
global economic turmoil for over 60 years, a mixture of
challenges and opportunities presented themselves to
investors, those on higher incomes and people planning
for their retirement.
The Government plans to introduce a 50% income tax rate on
annual incomes over £150,000 from 2010/11 and at the same time
reduce personal allowances for those earning over £100,000. It
also aims to restrict tax relief for individuals with income of £150,000
or more from 22nd April 2011. Additionally from 6 April 2011, relief
will be tapered so that those individuals with income of more than £180,000 will only receive 20%
tax relief, the same as a basic rate taxpayer.
The vast majority of higher rate taxpayers will continue to receive higher rate tax relief on their
pension contributions. And for people with earnings of less than £150,000 in this and each of the
previous two tax years, there is no impact whatsoever.
So dealing with pensions first, there was nothing in the Budget that diminished the absolute
need for people to continue to save hard for their retirement. With people living longer and
the reduction in State and other support, retirement planning and setting aside sufficient funds
remain absolutely critical.
Whether people are affected or not by the Budget changes, the majority have to save more for
their retirement and people who do not accumulate enough run the risk of outliving their savings.
People therefore need to determine how much they will need to save, understand the cost of
delaying, commit to a plan and take action.
As far as investors are concerned, ISA’s remain the trusted haven for investing savings with
freedom from income tax and capital gains tax, and from 6 October this year, the maximum
contribution for those born before 6 April 1960 is raised to £10,200 for the 2009/10 tax year, with
the maximum contribution in cash being £5,100. From 6 April next year, the new limits will apply
to all ISA investors, regardless of age.
This is welcome news for those adversely affected by the removal of higher rate tax relief
on pension contributions and those who will pay the higher 50% rate of tax on income. After
pensions, ISA’s are the most tax efficient way to save and invest for the future, representing the
cornerstone of many an investment portfolio. They are readily accessible, free of any further
liability to personal income tax and capital gains tax, giving a similar advantage over time to
pension funds. However, the future tax treatment of ISA’s or pensions cannot be guaranteed to
remain as they are, as they are subject to legislative changes.
With Inheritance Tax (IHT), the nil rate band for 2009/10 has been increased from £312,000
to £325,000, and to £350,000 in 2010/11. For a married couple or registered civil partners this
can mean that up to £650,000 of the combined estate could pass free of IHT. This may provide
further scope for lifetime gifting with discretionary trusts.
