John Tyler was the 10th president of The United States of America. John Tyler was born on March 29, 1790 to John and Mary Armistead Tyler. He was only one of eight children they had. His family owned a slave plantation and was a very powerful family. His family influence allowed him to attend the college of John and Mary where he studies criminal justice and law. He graduated in 1807 when he was only 17 years old. Two years later in 1809 he was admitted on the bar and when he was 21 years of age he worked with his father at a law firm in Richmond, Virgina. He was also on the House of Delegates in Virginia. During the war of 1812(the war of 1812 was when the United States and Great Britain were fighting it is often remember by the burning of Washington D.C.) John Tyler was enlisted as a captain but his unit never actually saw or participated in combat. He was a member of the Virginia House of Delegates from 1816-1821but then he left because he felt that he was always on the losing end of the debates and he was always in the minorities as a voter and from 1825-27 he was the Governor of Virginia. Nine years after Tyler served in the US Senate. He became a known opponent of Andrew Jackson. John Tyler joined the Whig Party (was a party thats opposed Andrew Jackson). In 1840 he was elected Vice President with William Harrison. William Harrison and John Tyler were elected into office but one month after they were sworn in President William Harrison died. John Tyler is the first vice

president to become the president by the death of his predecessor. He was sworn in April 6, 1841. People started to call him his accidentcy. He was also the first president to hold to hold office without a vice president. When the Whig party sent him a bill for a national bank they thought they could use him but the Whig party quickly found out he had a mind of his own when he vetoed the bill and in retaliation they kicked him out the party and tried to impeach him but that plan fall through. In 1814 he signed the pre-emption act/western settlement allowing a person to claim 160 arches of public land and they are allowed to purchase it from the government. In 1842 he ended the Seminole war in Florida and settled a dispute between the United States and British North America colonies over boundary issues with the Webster-Ashburton Act. In 1844 he signed the treaty of wanghia with china allowing America access to Asian ports and in 1845 he signed a bill annexing Texas. On his final day of presidency President Tyler signed a bill making Florida the 27th state in America. John Tyler was a big family man his 1st wife Letita Christal gave him 8 children. She had a stroke making her unable to her first lady duties. Her oldest daughter took over those duties. She died after her second stroke making her the first wife to die while her husband was in office. John Tyler married Julia Gardner when he was 54 and she was 24 making them the first couple to get married in the white house. They had 7 kids together. John Tyler was truly the father of the country. He fathered 15 children making him the president who father the most kids ever.

After he left office former President John Tyler led a comprise movement in the south and he failed. He started to work as confederate house representative and he finally died in 1862 at the age 72. John Tyler may have not been the most interesting president but, I like him because he broke a lot of barriers by becoming the first in most things. I feel like he was a very strong leader and did not flounder under pressure. Te was a man deserving of the title president of the United States.
