Guidelines on the handling of rolling bearings

Rolling bearings, rolling bearing parts and rolling bearing greases are high quality goods. They must be treated with care during storage and handling as well as before and during fitting. Rolling bearings must be fitted using tools that are suitable and intended for the purpose. If unsuitable or contaminated tools and fitting aids are used, this will seriously impair the function of the bearings and significantly reduce their operating life. The work must only be carried out by personnel with the appropriate qualifications. Schaeffler accepts no liability for loss or damage arising from incorrect storage, handling, fitting or maintenance. Storage, fitting and maintenance should be carried out in accordance with the data: in Catalogue HR 1, Rolling Bearings in Technical Product Information WL 80100/3EA, Mounting and Dismounting of Rolling Bearings in the customer-specific fitting and maintenance manual prepared by Application Engineering, Wind Energy.

Storage and storage period

Rolling bearings must only be stored in their original packaging, lying flat and in dry storage rooms and must be protected against shocks, vibration and impact type loads. The packaging must not be opened until immediate before the bearing is fitted, see also section Removal from packaging. The storage period is restricted by the lifetime of the grease and the sealing ring material. Irrespective of the design, rolling bearings should not be stored for longer than three years. Bearings and bearing parts must be carried out using suitable operating equipment (crane, lifting gear). Bearing parts must be attached at the intended points using the specified fastening elements (for example eye bolts). Perspiration leads to corrosion. Hands should be kept clean and dry and protective gloves worn if necessary. Bearings should only be removed from their original packaging immediately before fitting. Bearings should be oiled or greased immediately after unpacking. If the packaging has been removed, the bearings must be protected against contamination during long waiting periods. Rolling bearings should be fitted in the workshop if possible. They must be protected against moisture, aggressive media and contamination from the environment. The fitting area must be kept clean and free from dust. If you have any questions, variations on practice or complaints, please contact the External Sales employee assigned to you.
