MichaelUnfollow Follow Michael Michael Novev System failure occurs when system load expends beyond available generation. This leads to system instability, frequency decrease and system failure. How it happens is all another question with different answer for each situation. 1 month ago Unlike Like

virgilioUnfollow Follow virgilio virgilio rodriguez Leonardo is not kidding, there a lot of possible reasons for a power grid failure. So you have to be specific which part of the power system where you want the failure to occur. It could be at the power plant, at the transmission line, at the substation, even at the customer side. 1 month ago Unlike Like

S CUnfollow Follow S C S C Budhiraja There can be numrous reasons for grid failures. Some of them are 1.over drawel of power more than allotted by utilities, resulting in system frequency going below set value. 2.Insulator failure of heavy loaded transmission lines due to fog in winter season. 3.sudden tripping of important power unit/ station 4 Mal function of relays/instruments. 1 month ago Unlike Like

Syed MujtabaUnfollow Follow Syed Mujtaba Syed Mujtaba Hassan it could be the failure of any protective equipment like if one of circuit breaker of connected transmission line fails to trip, then it causes the tripping of all other connected circuit breaker of EHT/ HT bus bar, to limit the fault...& save the expensive equipments of Grid. 1 month ago Unlike Like

John Simonelli Thats a loaded question with many tentacles. In general some event on the system causes cascading thermal overloads, voltage collapse, negatively damped voltage and/or power transients or classical first swing instability. Contributing factors can be: - Major imbalance between load and generation, - Protection relay mis-operation and/or mis-coordination, - Special protection system mis-operation, - Human error, - Large power transfers across the bulk transmission system, - Poorly tuned turbine and governor controls on on-line generators, - Poor reactive planning and/or performance of on-line reactive resources, - Excessive and poorly coordinated transmission and generation maintenance across the system, - Etc, etc, etc, you name it, it has probably happened in the past. If you check the North American Electric Reliability Cooperation (NERC) website there are numerous blackout post mortem reports published which offer many details. 1 month ago Unlike Like

PeterUnfollow Follow Peter Peter Fox Simply stated its when demand exceeds supply. Demand response has become an important component of electric system planning. Utilities and regulatory commissions are setting goals to obtain a higher percentage of energy supply from renewable resources and take polluting plants off the grid. Meanwhile, demand for electricity continues to increase with no signs of letting up. On the flip side, efforts to meet increased demand by pushing more electricity through transmission equipment can cause problems such as voltage fluctuations. Machinery may stop working at low voltage levels, and resulting effects can be short term brownouts in isolated areas to widespread blackouts with burnt transistors and power lines. Demand response allows electricity suppliers and grid operators to cut stress by reducing demand for electricity. Grids are thus stabilized and electricity can be provided reliably. 1 month ago Unlike Like

ManojUnfollow Follow Manoj Manoj Badave Hi all, as every body explained earlier there are practically ennumerable reasons for this qustion, still there is no guarntee that the next grid failure may be due to one of these! Lookking parctically on this issue than theorotical, the grid failure mainly depends on the grid stability. both transient as well as steady state. If the power grid is not properly designed, overloaded, it can become instable due to any small discturbances, if the stability is not restored, grid faliure occurs. I know some examples, where the national grid fails if there is any fault in the steel rolling mil, which is a local plant level problem but the grid has become so sensitive, it fails due to such local faults also! 1 month ago Unlike Like

Sammy SamunUnfollow Follow Sammy Samun Sammy Samun AIAU I agree, there are various parameters in the electrical power grid (system) that can cause from minor to major power grid failures. It all comes down to power system stability. If it can not be maintained (monitoring and controling), then the power grid fails. 1 month ago Unlike Like

abdelaali badache easons for power grid failure are numerous but you have to be more precise when you mention poxer grid failure . Every segment in the grid might be a cause of failure : generation ,transmission grid , distribution grid .Every device relay might be a cause of failure . Human management might be a cause of failure .so when you clarify more your question ,the answer might be different . 1 month ago Unlike Like
