Engineers, I Need advice, please help - tripping of MV switchgear when transformer breaker is closed in the RMU

our customer is supply power from 2 generators at 13.8KV to our MV switchgear which has 2 incomers, incomer CB1 and incomer CB2 (1 working + 1 standby). when i close the incomer CB1 and outgoing CB1, the RMUs get energized (total 9 RMUs). However, when i try to close the outgoing breaker of RMU to transformer i.e. "Tee-off" breaker, the incomer CB1 of MVSG trips and gives a fault indication of over/undervoltage. however, when the customer runs 4 generators, there is no problem and the system runs smoothly with transformer and downstream MCC & load powered up. Iam confused as to why the MV incomer 1 and incomer 2 breaker gets trip due to undervoltage when i try to power up transformer on no load with 2 generators supplying the MV switchgear. and when 4 generators supply, there is no problem at all even with load.?? 3 days ago

Ing. OleUnfollow Follow Ing. Ole Ing. Ole Knudsen Transformer inrush current! Try inserting a time delay before the relays trip the load on undervoltage. Just a few hundred milliseconds will probably suffice. With four generators you have half the supply impedance as with two, so the volt drop will be half as big. Having load connected reduces this volt drop even further. 2 days ago Unlike Like

GaniyuUnfollow Follow Ganiyu Ganiyu Olabode Pls check the AVRs and the sensing voltage of the generators. Are the 4 generators synchronized together? Have you tried the other two on a seperate basis? Have you tried the standby gen alone? If you have done all these, then check the Cold Load pickup of your Relays and increase the setting. 1 day ago Unlike Like

Consider the Upstream and Downstream Load Flow and Fault Analysis by using ETAP or other Power System Software..That is more reliable solutions, more effective and safe. 11 hours ago Unlike Like

BenUnfollow Follow Ben Ben Laming Does just sound like magnetisation current of the other transformers on the circuit. As the first post says, put a time delay before the relay operates or try to close the outgoing CB1 with less transformers connected to the circuit, therefore much less magnetisation current. 4 hours

Ramesh B It looks like tripping due to transformer in rush current.you have not indicated the rating of transformer and dg set.if you could furnish the details I can calculate the voltage dip. Based on the dip , uv setting and time delay setting to be set. Another point is transformer rating can not be higher than dg set rating

SimonUnfollow Follow Simon Simon Zielonka I would tend to agree with the volt drop being caused by inrush current. Please provide SLD of the network to help us all understand your problem better.

SyedUnfollow Follow Syed Syed Shakeel Ahmed the generators being used are temporary. once we get power from the local ministry, we would remove those rental generators. for info, transformer rating is 1500KVA, and rating of each of the 2 generators is 1100 KVA.

AbbasUnfollow Follow Abbas Abbas Borhani In rush current is a high transit current that happen during power connection to any transformer. It is natural. The protection relay should not trip the circuit breaker on that time. whereas frequency of in rush current is 100 HZ and have a different frequency with the real current faults; So the protection relay can recognize this current and do not make a trip (should be set up). But your problem is in the generator, that can not supply the in rush current of the transformer; so the voltage going down and the under voltage relay is energized. I think, you need to close the circuit breaker before starting the generator of course without load (the circuit breaker out put of the transform should keep open). The voltage of transformer rise step by step with voltage of generator, then in rush current is not happen, i think so. and the relay do not make a trip, but you need to make sure that protection relays are ready to acting.

Ing. Ole Knudsen As mentioned earlier, your Undervoltage protection simply must have a little more patience! It is not likely that any of your connected loads would even notice if a cycle or two should be missing from their supply.

Ing. OleUnfollow Follow Ing. Ole Ing. Ole Knudsen RMU = Ring Main Unit It's like having a geographically extended switchboard, with two bus couplers and a cable section between each feeder out of the switchboard. It is very common in particular in mining applications, as you can select either one of two feeders to e.g. a transformer, without having to double up the whole installation. The MV supply is then performed through a ring network, rather than individual feeders.

TUSHARUnfollow Follow TUSHAR TUSHAR TAILOR rmu means ring main unit. assume two greed are connected between four sub station.here we considered one isolator one breaker n another isolator it's became one board.I.e. two incoming and one outgoing traansformer feeder.total for board are there, when one greed is fully charged at that time all four emu connected in series.when you start one isolator at the moment at that time a common bus trow bfn charged n other isolator charge. these connection apply other rmu. greed two supply is off at the moment. now it's complete one ring. apply same supply on greed no two side at that time greed one is off. in switchgear side there is no possibility to complete a ring because fault level is higher. as compare to ring supply. mv switchgear supply coming from GOD. n cable throu connected current transformer and potential transformer. when vcb charge so common bus or cable connected step down type transformer.

above two point are some different between emu n switchgear.
