BIOLOGICAL CONTROL OF CATS CLAW CREEPER

Atkinson/Buaraba Creek Catchment Landcare Group Biological control of cats claw creeper (Macfadyena unguis -cati (Bignoniaceae), a declared weed) with a tingid leaf sucking bug (Carvalhotingis visenda) and the leaf-tying pyralid moth (Hypocosmia pyrochroma) has been underway on Buaraba Creek since 2007. In late 2007, Mariano Trevino, an experimentalist from the Department of Primary Industries, released the tingid at two sites and the leaf tying moth at one site. Within two weeks the tingid had dispersed to around three metres of the original site leaving behind a trail of white spotted cats claw leaves.

Planning your winter forage

This is an important part of managing a grazing enterprise. Keep an eye on our website for Stocktake Workshops being planned for Autumn 2013. www.seqcatchments.com.au

The moths destroyed a great amount of Cats Claw within two weeks, leaving behind dead leaves and larvae. The tingid survived well the January 2011 floods, which saw a lot of Cat's Claw spread rapidly downstream to Moreton Bay. The success of this tinged relies on the landholder to continue moving infested potted plants around to other areas on the creek bank. A new biological control agent, the leaf-mining jewel beetle, was released at Buaraba Creek by Biosecurity Queensland in January 2012.
