In early times, man depended entirely on his own muscular energy and later supplemented it with that of animals. As man came to rely heavily on horse, ass, ox and camel, he was slowly to discover the use of other natural sources of energy

There are various kinds of energy all around. Water falling down the hi~l, the movement of air or the burning fuel - all have one or other kind of energy. The oxidation of food provides muscular energy. The oxidation of fuel provides energy for the steam engine.' So we have to get energy from somewhere or the other, but cannot create it. Matter has two different kinds of energy, the one which is active and the other waiting passively to be used. Water coming down from a waterfall, the weight of the pile-driver coming down or steam expanding in an engine is an example of active energy, which is called 'kinetic energy', by scientists. The other is water in a reservoir or the weight of the pile-driver resting on top of the machine, which are not actively doing work but in a position to do work (passive). Such kind of energy that is stored up and not active is called 'potential energy'. One thing is sure that man and his use of energy is the main reason for the development of machine.
