(1.2) Evaluate the features of the different approaches in language teaching. (6.1, 6.4) Discuss issues and implications of second language learning in the primary classroom. (6.3, 8.3) Design activities based on the principles of different approaches in the primary ELT classroom (6.1, 8.5)

SPECIFIC LEARNING OUTCOMES To enable students to: 1. 2. 3. 4. 5. Read, compile and write a report on an assigned method. Present the report of the assigned method to the class Look for/design an activity based on the principles of the assigned method and demonstrate the activity to the whole class. Write a personal reflection on the activity based on the feedback given during the presentation; Make critical observation and evaluation of an English lesson of any Year (Year 1 Year 5) during PBS II and describe as well as evaluate the teaching and learning session by discussing to what extent the teaching and learning process shows evidence of the application of the theories of language learning and acquisition and the different methods in language teaching.

TASK 1: a) Sub-task 1: Review of method (group work) - 10% 1. You are required to work in a group of 3/4. 2. One method from the list below will be assigned to your group: a. Audio-Lingual Method b. Direct Method c. Suggestopedia d. Grammar Translation Method e. Community Language Learning f. Total Physical Response g. Silent Way h. Communicative Language Teaching The task: 1. Read up on the assigned method given to your group. Then write a review of the method. The review may include the following: the background, characteristics, strengths and weaknesses of the method an example(s) of an activity based on the method. 2. The review should be more or less 4-5 pages long. 3. Use font Arial 11 pt and 1.5 line spacing.

b) Group presentation (group work) 10% 1. You are required to work in a group of 3/4. 2. Turn your written report in sub-task 1 into a power point graphic organizer and present it to the whole class. Divide the presentation equally among members of the group and take turn to present to the whole class. 3. Invite your friends to give critical feedback to your individual presentation and also to the content of your presentation. 4. Submit the hardcopy of your power point together with the review of the method. 5. Compile all the hardcopies of the presentations from all groups in your folio for future reference.

c) Written Reflection (individual work) - 5% 1. Write an individual reflection in about 800 words. In the reflection, discuss the strengths and weaknesses of the method as well as your group presentation. 2. Use font Arial 11 pt and 1.5 line spacing.

TASK 2: (Individual tasks) A Description of grammar/language skills lesson observed during PBS II (10%). Describe clearly and completely an English lesson of any Year (Year 1 - Year 5) that shows the teaching/learning of one of the language skills / grammar. - Your lesson description should be in about 800 words. You should append evidence to support your description. Your description should include the following: target group (Year, Level of proficiency, Urban/Rural) theme/topic (syllabus) focussed language skills or grammar teaching materials activities (steps/procedures) support materials

B Discussion of learning theory(ies) with reference to the lesson observed. (15%) Discuss to what extent the teaching/learning process shows evidence of the application of the learning theories below: Behaviourism Cognitivism Social Constructivism Humanism Your discussion of the application of the learning theory of your choice should be in about 1000 words.
