We are applauding a few achievements for our local initiative!

We are almost two months into our new financial year and we have already presented to two groups of service providers and have a third before the end of August - this time will be a half day workshop to social work students. It looks to be a busy year for our small team at Settlement Support NZ. It is very pleasing to be invited by service provider organisations or employers and be able to demonstrate the resources and suggestions we have to offer to both of these groups as well as to our migrant clients. That suggests we have a multi-pronged mandate within our contract of delivery to the Western Bay of Plenty region and we are pleased to have this opportunity to assist our host community to understand and welcome our changing demographic in the area. Another success we celebrate is a change to the SmartGrowth strategic plan 2013. Migrants are here to stay and newcomers will increase as the need for skills increases over the next years. Our team and partners acknowledge some of the differences we have made, and together we work hard to achieve more education and training toward being a welcoming community as we open our doors wider to make newcomers feel at home. We need and want them to stay because they like us and want to make their contribution to their new chosen home. Our message is also applicable to NZ Ex Pats returning to our shores to be with their families and bring up their own children at home. That means we are also available as a service to welcome our returning NZers to a lifestyle they knew and enjoyed in their own younger lives before they went offshore to earn the bigger money and see the world.
Nga mihi

Tena koutou katoa - (Greetings to everyone) I am now back at work having spent a wonderful four weeks away with my family. I travelled with my Mum and Dad and my three children to the UK to stay with my brother and his family, calling in at Shanghai on the way and via Paris and Hong Kong on the way back. We were blessed not only with being in England for the birth of the new prince, Prince George, but also to have experienced one of the best spells of summer weather in almost forty years. Wherever we went we had hot sunny weather with not a day of rain the whole time we were away. My two boys, who had never been to the UK before, are now under the misguided opinion that the weather in England is always hot and sunny!! It was truly lovely to return to New Zealand and our first weekend home was crisp and sunny not at all like winter! We discovered that while travel broadens the mind and provides fantastic experiences, it also makes you appreciate what you have at home! ~ Helen

Success for Submission to SmartGrowth Strategic Plan

We are delighted to note that in the latest draft of the SmartGrowth strategic plan, following on from our written and oral submissions, there is a new sub-section introduced into the Building the Community section entitled Cultural Diversity. The new sub-section acknowledges that cultural diversity in our region is increasing and that this needs to be embraced and that a cultural diversity fund should be established to assist in raising awareness of ethnic cultures in Tauranga, in-depth research on the impact of immigration on the demographic structure of the region and to support communication and developing relationships with all ethnic communities. The plan also aims to assess the value migrant workers add to the western Bay economy.

Make a date with your money !!

The Tauranga Budget Advisory Service is about to begin a new campaign aimed at encouraging all households to become financially literate and to promote the positives about being smart with your money inviting everyone to Make a Date with Your Money. The service is hoping to rid itself of the image that it works only with beneficiaries but that in fact their messages and advice are relevant to everyone and that most people would benefit from setting and sticking to financial goals. The Tauranga Budget Advisory Service has 27 volunteer budget advisors ready to work with people in the region. They are based at the Historic Village, Seventeenth Avenue (and have drop in clinics in Merivale, Welcome Bay and Bayfair) and are open from Monday Friday from 9.00am-3.30pm. The service can be contacted on 07 578 0969 or by emailing info@tgabudget.org.nz. Tauranga Budget Advisory Service BA5 Tauranga Budget Advisory Service is hosting the next Chamber of Commerce Business After Five (BA5) event at the Historic Village Hall on Wednesday 4 September from 5.15pm-7.00pm. Looking for excellent administrators? We are frequently in contact with potential employees of a high calibre for various administrative and other positions.
Currently we are in contact with two NZ Resident returnees to Tauranga who are job seeking preferably in a medical environment. Both would like to work part-time in a medical centre or similar. Jen has experience running the filing systems at large diagnostic practices in Tauranga and in Perth, Australia. Her references are impeccable as an efficient woman who just gets on with the job, owns her work situation and is a loyal employee. Pam is a former registered nurse who recently held a position as receptionist in a medical practice with some minor nursing duties. Pam would also like to work part-time but is open to negotiation. Please contact me if you are interested in an interview with either of these women. Marie is a young woman who has migrated to NZ and is a NZ Resident. Recently Marie held a responsible temporary position as receptionist and administrator at the front desk of a busy, charitable trust. This was a multi-tasking job for which she took full responsibility whilst the permanent employee was away. She was always smiling, didnt get flustered and sorted out all tasks efficiently. She so impressed with her capabilities that we include her here.

A few facts about Thailand

Did you know that Thailands name in the Thai language is Prathet Thai, which means Land of the Free? It is the only country in Southeast Asia that was never colonized by a European nation. Thailand is also home to the worlds largest gold Buddha, the largest crocodile farm, the largest restaurant, the longest single-span suspension bridge, and the worlds tallest hotel! There is a significant Thai community here in the Bay of Plenty and we are privileged to know many of its members.

What is a night market?

Night markets usually have amazing food stalls cooking up tasty snacks and delicacies as well as arts and crafts, jewellery, clothing, fashion accessories, and fresh produce stalls. Markets often have free live entertainment, cultural performers, fortune tellers, foot massage and airbrush tattoos. The market is a great night out for the whole family. Lets see what the Tauranga Night Market has to offer!
