Temperature Control in Concrete

The following are the measures to be taken to maintain and control temperature of concrete as per the requirement of project specifications. These measures are in compliant with the guidelines in ACI 305R-99, Qatar Construction Specification and CIRIA Guide for hot weathering concrete 1. Concrete mixing & placing time - During hot weather periods concreting operations are not planned between the hours of 10:00 hours to 17:00 hours (sic). 2. Raw materials a. Cement/Microsilica- Cement, GGBS and Microsilica are stored in white silos. Whenever possible, cement is stored in the silos long enough to allow substantial cooling. b. Coarse and Fine Aggregate-Stockpiles of aggregate are shaded from direct sunlight. The stockpiles are open from both sides in order to have better ventilation of air and also to maintain the aggregate temperature below as much as possible. c. Washed sand - to drain and uses lowest possible moisture to allow greater ice addition. d. Water- Cooling the mixing water by chiller unit that lowers the water temperature by 2-5C. 3. Ice Plant- Ice Plant is available with rated production capacity.70-75 % of water will be replaced with flaked ice to keep the concrete temperature to a minimum. 4. Transit Mixer- Transit mixers drum are cooled with chilled water before concrete is batched and painted with white colour to reflect heat. 5. Workability- To ensure that both the fresh and hardened properties of the concrete, admixtures are added. It retains workability and offsets the increased water demand resulting from the higher concrete temperature. 6. Monitoring- Technician will be assigned to the plant for sampling and testing concrete (control temperature and workability of the concrete) before any concrete truck leaves the plant to ensure it complies with the project specification/QCS 2010 requirements on site. 7. Admixture, Ice and chilled water additions shall be adjusted to obtain the target concrete temperature and workability before dispatching. 8. There will be close co-ordination of staff at batching plants maintains with site based technicians/ site QC Engineer. If any adjustment is required to maintain workability and temperature, it will be made with the addition/reduction of admixtures and Ice/chilled water. 9. Concrete delivery: - Attention will be given in coordinating and dispatching of the mixing trucks with the pre planned rate of placement to avoid delays in delivery.

10. Concrete placement: - Sufficient concrete pumps will be engaged to ensure the predetermined rate of pouring. Parking and waiting time for the concrete trucks will be minimized by proper planning and coordination.
