3.5 Preparation and submission of detailed report of field and laboratory results with recommendations. 4.0 FIELD INVESTIGATIONS-GEO-TECHNICAL STUDIES 4.1 Boring rig with all requisite equipments and accessories were mobilized at the worksite. A team of technical personnel with skilled labours was also deputed. 4.2 Eight boreholes of 150 mm diameters were bored to a maximum depth of 20 m below the existing ground level. The borehole was made as per IS: 1892 - 1979. 4.3 Representative soil samples were collected at every change of strata or about 1.0 m intervals up to 5.0m and about 1.5 m intervals up to termination depth. The samples so collected were sealed and numbered with full particulars for identification and sent to the laboratory for conducting the required tests. 4.3 Standard Penetration Tests were conducted in the bore- holes at 1.0 m intervals as per IS: 2131. In this test, a standard split spoon sampler driven into the ground at the required depth by means of standard hammer of 63.5 kgs weight, falling from a height of 75 cm. Number of blows for the first 15 cm not taken into consideration because of possible disturbances or presence of settled, suspended matters at the bottom of the bore- holes. The total number of blows for the next 30 cm depth of penetration was considered as SPT N values as shown in figure no 1 to 8.

In borehole BH 7 Loose clayey sand occurs from ground level up to 2 m, followed by silty sand up to 3 m, weathered calcareous sand stone up to 20 m, at which depth the bore hole was terminated. In borehole BH 8 Loose silty sand occurs from ground level up to 3 m, followed by silty sand with gravel up to 5 m, weathered calcareous sand stone up to 20 m, at which depth the bore hole was terminated. 7.0 GROUND WATER TABLE Ground water table was met at a depth of 1.2 m to 2.3 m below the existing ground level in the boreholes, during boring from 19/4/2012 to 26/4/2012.
8.0 DISCUSSION ON RESULTS AND TYPE OF FOUNDATION For the soil conditions discussed in Sl.no.6 above, taking in to account hard stratum at a depth 2 m to 4 m from the existing ground level, the following recommendations are made for foundations.
Soil investigation for the proposed structure at Udankudi, Tuticorin, Tamil Nadu. __________________________________________________________________________________________________
Individual column footings or Strip raft combining a row of columns or raft foundation is recommended. Excavation shall be made up to a depth where the SPT (N) values more than 50 are obtained from the existing ground level, for all column footings. After thorough compaction of the bottom of excavation, provide 100 mm thick compacted sand cushion layer if clay occurs at the bottom of foundation pit. PCC for the column footings can be laid on the compacted surface/sand cushion layer. A safe bearing capacity of 40 t/m2 is recommended under the RCC foundations. However, the width of any column footing/strip raft shall not be less than 1 m. At the time of excavation for foundations, in case ground water table occurs within the recommended depth of excavation, sumps may be made to an additional depth of 0.3 m at one or more corners of the foundation pits for column footings or at desired locations at the periphery of excavation for strip raft/raft foundation and the water collected in the sumps may be bailed out. At the time of laying the sand cushion layer, the bottom of excavation shall be relatively dry (not slushy). Dewatering shall be maintained until that part of the concrete in the foundations, which comes below the ground water table level, sets.
If there is any difficulty in adopting a depth of excavation up to hard strata (N>60) if there is any dewatering problem to lower the ground water table, the depth of excavation may be reduced to 2 m and the following alternate recommendations may be adopted.
Excavation shall be made up to a depth of at least 1.5 m below the existing ground level, for all column footings, irrespective of the importance of the column or the loading on the column.

Soil investigation for the proposed structure at Udankudi, Tuticorin, Tamil Nadu. __________________________________________________________________________________________________
After thorough compaction of the bottom of excavation, a layer of hard core, 300 mm thickness, shall be placed. The hard core layer shall be at least 450 mm wider on each of the four sides of the column footing. Specifications for the hard core layer are given in Enclosure-1. The sand used to fill the voids of the hard broken stone in the hard core layer shall be mixed with powder dry shell lime (with available Calcium Oxide being not less than 60% and the amount of powder dry shell lime 30 % by volume of the sand used to fill the voids in the hard core metal). A list of some of a few sources of good quality lime and the tests to be conducted on lime and some of the laboratories where these tests can be conducted are given in Enclosure-2. The lime powder shall be mixed with the sand just before placing it on the 200 mm thick metal which forms the hard core layer. The addition of powder dry shell lime in the sand used to fill the voids of the hard broken stone is intended to reduce the plasticity of the underlying silty clay, which in turn will reduce the shrinkage and swelling effects of the underlying silty clay. The Addition of lime powder also helps to improve the strength of the silty clay. A safe bearing capacity of 10 t/m2 under the RCC column footings is recommended for the design of column footings. It may be noted that the pressure on the soil at the bottom of the hard core layer will be much less than 10 t/m2, since the hard core layer spreads the load on a much larger area of the soil than the area of footing. However, the width of any column footing shall not be less than 1 m. It is not desirable to use the excavated silty sandy clay of for back filling of foundations. It is desirable to use inert material such as sand or gravel for back filling. Back filling shall be done in layers of not more than 150 mm thickness. Each layer shall be well compacted (mere spreading the back fill material for back filling is not adequate. Layered compaction shall be done for back filling).

9.0 METHOD OF COMPUTING OF SAFE BEARING CAPACITY 9.1 a) SHALLOW FOOTING Allowable bearing capacity for shallow foundation can be computed from the following equation as per IS: 6403 1981. qds = 1/F {C.Nc.Sc.dc.ic + q(Nq-1).Sq.dq.iq + 1/2.B..N. S.d.i.w} where, qds Safe allowable bearing capacity in Kg/cm CCohesion of the soil in Kg/cm
q - Overburden pressure in Kg/cm B Width of footing in cm - Unit wt. Of soil in Kg/cc Sc, Sq & S - Shape factors dc, dq, d - Depth factors ic, iq & i - inclination factors Nc, Nq & N - Bearing capacity factors depending upon the angle of internal friction of the soil. F Factor of safety W Correction factor for water table. 10.0 RECOMMENDATIONS FOR SUITABLE TYPE OF FOUNDATION AND SAFE BEARING CAPACITY Individual column footings or Strip raft combining a row of columns or raft foundation is recommended. Excavation shall be made up to a depth where the SPT (N) values more than 50 are obtained from the existing ground level, for all column footings. After thorough compaction of the bottom of excavation, provide 100 mm thick compacted sand cushion

When most of the sand goes in to the voids of the broken stone, one more thin layer of clean river sand (mixed with powder dry shell lime) shall be placed again and using water jet, force it in to the voids of the broken stone. The process shall be repeated until no more sand and water get into the void spaces of the broken stone. Look for pockets or areas where water may flow in to the broken stone layer. This indicates that there are void spaces below such pockets. Identify such pockets, place more sand over the pockets and force the sand into the void space below, using water jetting. Forcing the sand into the void spaces of the broken stone using water jetting shall be done right up to the edge of the hard core layer.
