BOARD OF EDUCATION NEWS:
A special meeting of the Smethport Area School District Board of Directors was held on
Monday, June 1, 2009, in the Smethport Area Elementary School.
The following agenda items were approved:
 An additional twenty (20) days for Gary Boden, Technology Coordinator, for summer
projects.
 An additional fifteen (15) days for Michele Dunn, for 2009-10 school preparations.
 A resolution to transfer four (4) High School Learning Support teachers from
I.U. 9 to Smethport Area School District beginning in 2009-10.
 The letter of resignation for retirement purposes from Kathy Alter effective June 30, 2009.
 The appointment of Toni Morris as Food Service Director.
 The appointment of Lisa Lutz as Pre-K Aide to begin in the 2009-10 school year.
 The creation of a Supervisor of Special Education and Early Childhood Programs position.
The Smethport Area School District wishes to congratulate the

participate. The scholarship will be put into a 529 plan if student is not of age
for college. Simply submit an entry form between April 26th and July 15th,

BRITTANY SHELLEY, A SENIOR AT SMETHPORT
AREA HIGH SCHOOL, IS THE FIRST RECIPIENT OF THE
DOUGLAS F. BOWMAN, MD MEMORIAL SCHOLARSHIP.
Shelley excelled in academics and was involved in numerous
sports and activities while a student. She also served her
community by volunteering her time as a mentor and tutor to
fellow students, entertaining residents at Lakeview and Sena-
Kean, picking up trash around town, and helping at benefit
dinners. She plans to attend Gannon University in the fall to
study nursing.
Charles Cole Memorial Hospital established the scholarship
fund following Dr. Bowman’s untimely death in November. Dr.

garage to steal the car as part of his

him the values of hard work and
character. In so doing, Walt

directionless following his wife’s

and moving metaphor for today’s
America and its yearning to return
to some of those values that have
been lost in recent decades. I can’t

eyebrows and ears with her fingers.
Together, talk about the location of
these features. Combining the
tactile, the visual and a little
discussion builds on understanding
of shape and position. Plus, there

sharing time to look -- really look -
- at one another.
Now transfer that knowledge of
“face basics” to your own drawing
of Dad. Here’s how:
--Take a photo of Dad from the
waist up to use as inspiration for
the portrait.
--On the matte side of an 8-inch-
by-12-inch sheet of poster board,
sketch Dad’s portrait with a pencil.
Be sure to include his neck and
shoulders so that it doesn’t look
like a floating balloon head! Also,
