1. (a) A copper wire of diameter 1cm has resistance of 0.15Ω. It was drawn under pressure so that its diameter
was reduced to 50%. What is the new resistance of the wire?
(b) State and explain Faradays law of electromagnetic induction. [10+6]
2. (a) A copper wire of diameter 1 cm had a resistance of 0.15 ohm. It was drawn under pressure so that its
diameter was reduced to 50%. What is the new R of the wire.
(b) The field coil of a d.c generator has a resistance of 250 ohms and is supplied from a 220v source. If the
current in the field coil is to be limited to 0.44A, calculate the resistance of the resistor to be connected in
series with the coil.
Three resistors of 6 ohms, 9 ohms and 15 ohms are connected in parallel to a 180v supply. Calculate
i. Current in each branch of the network.
ii. Supply current
iii. Total resistance of the network. [8+8]
3. (a) Explain as to what you understand by
i. Static
ii. Dynamic inducement of electromotive force. Illustrate by the help of simple sketches.
(b) A coil of 100 turns is linked by a magnetic flux of 20mwb. If this magnetic flux is reversed in a time of 2ms,
calculate the average emf induced. [6+10]

5. (a) A 400/200V single phase transformer is supplying a load of 50A at a power factor of 0.866 lagging. The no
load current is 2 A at 0.208 power factor lagging. Find the primary current and primary power factor.
(b) Draw the phasor diagram of a transformer on load when it is taking [8+8]
i. Resistive load
ii. Inductive load
iii. Capacitive load.
6. (a) Explain in detail the principle of operation of a DC motor.
(b) What do you understand by the term ‘back emf’ ? Give its significance. Derive the voltage equation of the
motor. [8+8]
7. (a) Give the difference between squirrel cage induction motor and slip ring induction motor.
(b) A slip ring induction motor runs at 300 rpm at full load when connected to 60 Hz supply. Determine the
number of poles and slip.
(c) A 50 Hz 8 pole induction motor has full slip of 4%. The rotor resistance per phase is 0.01 Ω and standstill
reactance per phase is 0.1Ω. Find the ratio of maximum torque to full load torque and speed at which the
maximum torque occurs. [4+6+6]
8. Explain with neat sketch the construction and working of a MI ammeter and MC ammeter. [8+8]

6. (a) How is the efficiency of the dc motor determined by the direct loading method? Derive the equation for
efficiency.
(b) In a brake test on a dc shunt motor full load readings are as follows. Tension on tight side is 9.1 Kg, tension
on slack side is 0.8 Kg. Total current is 10 A, supply voltage is 110V, speed is 132 rpm, effective radius of
the pulley is 7.5 cm. Calculate its full load efficiency. [8+8]
7. (a) A 3 phase, 6 pole 50 Hz induction motor has a slip of 1.3% at no load and 4% at full load. Find
i. No load speed
ii. Full load speed
iii. Frequency of rotor current on full load.
(b) A 3 phase star connected 3.3 KV, 6 pole 50Hz induction motor has rotor resistance of 0.1Ω and standstill
reactance of 1Ω. The motor has speed of 300 rpm at full load. Calculate slip at maximum torque and ratio
of maximum torque to full load torque. [8+8]
8. What do you understand by attraction type and repulsion type instruments? Explain [8+8]

(b) A circular ring of magnetic material has a length of 1m and a cross sectional area of 0.001
sq.cm. Saw cut of 5mm width is made in the ring. Calculate the magnetizing current
required to produce a flux of 0.1wb in the air gap, if the ring is uniformly wound with 200
turns. Take relative permeability of ring material as 500. Neglect leakage. [4+12]
4. Derive an expression for RMS value, average value, form factor and peak factor for the
(a) Square waveform
(b) Trapezoidal waveform. [8+8]
5. A 1 phase transformer has 500 turns on the primary and 40 turns on the secondary winding.
The mean length of the magnetic path on the core is 150 cm and the joints are equivalent to an
air gap of 0.1mm. When the potential difference of 3000V is applied to the primary, the max
flux density is 1.2 T. Calculate
(a) The cross sectional area of the core
(b) No load secondary voltage
(c) The no load current drawn by the primary
(d) Power factor on no load given that ampere turns per cm for a flux density of 1.2 T in the
iron to be 5, the corresponding iron loss to be 2W/Kg at 50Hz and density of iron as 7.8

(b) A dynamo has a rated armature current at 250A. What is the current per path of the
armature if the armature winding is lap or wave connected. The machine has 12 poles.

(b) Derive the emf equation of the synchronous generator. [8+8]

result.

(c) Half load efficiency at 0.8 power factor leading

6. (a) State the principle of conversion of energy and apply it to an electrical motor as an electromechan-
