Investigation
The problem
Global warming is a big subject nowadays. Scientists believe that people are
using too much energy and because of that too much carbon dioxide is emitted
into our atmosphere. This causes global warming, which warms up our world and
can cause hazards. Most of the people believe this theory, but still they don’t
stop with the excessive use of energy. This is why I have to make a non-
commercial advertisement, to make people aware of their own actions (ATL) and
to help with the improvement of our environment (Environment).

Design brief
To solve this problem I am going to make a (non-commercial) advertisement that
is meant to make people aware of their excessive energy usage and convince
them to save energy. I will make this advertisement with Microsoft Publisher,
which is a desktop publishing application which gives me more control of the
page elements than Microsoft Word. My advertisement will feature a powerful
one-liner, meant to convince people that they should follow my advice.

What I’m going to investigate

I will investigate the following points:

• How to make a good one-liner

• Non-commercial advertising
• Easy ways to save energy
• Making posters
• Working with Microsoft Publisher

One-liners
A one-liner is a catchy phrase or a joke consisting of one sentence. I found some
one-liners on Wikipedia. The funniest one-liner that I saw was the response to
“Winston, if we were married, I would put poison in your coffee!" by Nancy Astor.
Winston Churchill’s response was: "Nancy, if you were my wife, I'd drink it."
There isn’t really a method to make one-liners, you just need to know what
they are and then come up with one. My subject is global warming and because I
am against global warming I would like people to do the opposite of warming up
the world. That is why I came up with the one-liner “Keep it cool.” I am using
“Keep it cool” instead of “Keep it cool!” because when I would use an exclamation
mark I wouldn’t really “keep it cool” myself.
Non-commercial advertising
Non-commercial advertisements are, as the name suggests, advertisements
which are not meant to make profit. These kinds of advertisements are mainly
used by charity organizations to gain members or to activate people to change
their habits.
The goal of my non-commercial advertisement indeed is to change
people’s habits. I want to make people aware of the environmental issues and let
them adapt to our situation (global warming) by saving energy. I should convince
them that now is the time to prevent the possible effects of global warming.

Easy ways to save energy

• Don’t let the crane flow while brushing your teeth
• Don’t shower too long
• Turn of the lights when they aren’t used
• Turn off appliances you aren’t using

Design specification
• The flyer needs to look catchy
• The flyer must be attractive, with big letters
• There must be an image on the flyer to give the message more strength
• The flyer must achieve my goal
Design
Design 1

Design 1 Review
This design does not look very catchy, it is a bit boring because the background is
white and almost all the text is just black. The letters are big enough, but the
sentences are too close together and might be confusing. I think the image is
pretty good, but the text on it ruins it because it makes it unserious. Overall I
wouldn’t say that this is a very good design and it doesn’t really achieve my goal
because I don’t think people will take this flyer very serious.
Design 2

Design 2 Review
The second design looks very catchy because of the bakcground. The image is
very strong because it resembles pure nature, it resembles what is destroyed by
global warming. The energy saving tips are easily readable, but the title doesn’t
look very good because it isn’t big enough and the black doesn’t have enough
contrast with the background. I think this flyer would be pretty good, it looks nice
and it is clear what the person can do to save energy. I’d say that this flyer is able
to achieve my goal.
Design 3

Design 3 Review
I like the looks of this flyer, very clean and minimalistic. The title is easily
readable and the subtitle makes the purpose clear. It looks very catchy, but there
isn’t enough information on it. Although people get the message, they still won’t
know how to save energy. Because of this they might not save energy and that is
why I feel like this flyer isn’t able to achieve my goal.

Conclusion
I chose the second design. It doesn’t look the nicest, but it tells the reader what
to do and it servers its purpose the best because it gives all the tips and the tips
are easy to read. The background image gives a very strong feeling and this
should make people aware of the beauty of nature. This flyer is able to achieve
my goal the best and this is why I chose design number two. I’ll just make the
title a bit bigger and the subtitle a bit smaller to make the flyer look better.
Plan
What When
Make a first draft of the flyer First lesson after I finished the designs
Improve my poster according to the Second lesson -
designs and design specifications
Test my product First lesson after I finished my product
Evaluate my product First lesson after I tested my product

Review of plan
I worked roughly according to my plan, although I didn’t really need to improve
my poster according to the design specifications because I already improved my
design according to this. I tested my product myself and I have shown it to some
people the lesson after that I evaluated my product, just as I had planned. In
general my plan was pretty successful.
Evaluation
I had shown my product to a few people and they said it was moderately good. It
doesn’t look very polished, but it is still attractive because of the catching
background. They said that the message comes over very well and in the end
that is my flyer’s goal. They said that the tips were good and easy to follow,
which is good because this increases the chance that people will actually follow
my tips.
I think I worked pretty hard in class time, but I should have spent less time
on the investigation stage and more time on the other stages. I made three
designs which I all found pretty good and I took the time to make them, but I
didn’t really have enough time to improve my essay in the end. The next time I
will manage my time more efficiently.
I could improve my product by filling up the white spaces with green, like in
the original design. I could also make the green around the background blend
more into the picture using Photoshop to make it look better and I could add
some more tips.
I think my product can have a very beneficial impact on life, environment
and society because it makes people save energy, thus it reduces the effect of
global warming. This will preserve nature and make a better Earth for future
generations (society), which have a better thanks to this.
