Special Olympics Missouri Brandon Schatsiek Team Missouri 2014 -- August Thursday, August 01, 2013 5:16:09 PM

Congratulations Team Missouri!

You all deserve a big round of applause and a pat on the back for being selected to Team Missouri. You get to represent the nearly 17,000 athletes, 3,000 coaches and 1,500 unified partners here in Special Olympics Missouri at the 2014 National Games in New Jersey. Great Job! Now you need to prove to the rest of SOMO that you deserve this honor. Be proud of yourself, but dont look downon those not on the team. Be excited and happy that you are going to New Jersey, but dont brag about it. Show everyone what you showed us at camp. Be polite, help others, step up without being asked and always be a good sport. Team Missouri is much more than just a sports team. We are a family and we show everyone how proud we are to be on this team. We expect all of you to do your best and if that means you placed fourth or first, we will be proud of you just same. Now sit back and enjoy the ride. Train hard and walk at leastTHREE times a week. Make sure to tell your coaches what is going on with you and how you are training. Ask your local coach to help you train. Your Team Missouri coaches are preparing training plans and schedules for you to follow, so be sure to do what they ask. Your Team Missouri coaches are also planning training weekends or evenings to get with you and work out. Make sure to attend these trainings and if you cannot, be sure to call your coach as soon as you know that you have to miss a practice. Failure to let a coach know that you are not attending may be grounds for dismissal from the team. It may seem like a very long ways away right now, but do not wish your life away. It will be here before you know, so take the time to enjoy your accomplishment, get to know your teammates and coaches and have fun!

FAQs (Frequently Asked Questions) regarding paperwork

My athlete just had a physical done within the last 6 months. Does he/she need another one? Yes. The Games Operating Committee (GOC) requires a physical within one year of the event. Also, they require that we use their form for the physical. Do we need to submit two passport-type photographs with the paperwork? No. We took passport-type photographs of everyone at Selection Camp so we do not need photographs. My athlete takes several medications and these change quite often. With the physicals due in November, how will the GOC and Team Missouri know what he/she takes and when? We require a new medication list be sent with your athlete at departure so that we have a current list. How do I know if my athlete needs the Atlanto-axial Instability examination? Ask your doctor. This is for athletes with Downs Syndrome. Special Olympics requires that all athletes with Downs Syndrome have an Atlanto-axial Instability exam if they participate in Aquatics (use a dive start), play soccer, do the High Jump or Pentathlon events in Track & Field or the Squat Lift in Powerlifting. Why does the GOC need my athletes profile? These are used to give to the media. In some cases athletes are selected for different honors like being involved in the Opening or Closing Ceremonies, or being interviewed or asked to give a speech. The GOC uses these profiles to tell the athletes story or to introduce them.
