Intro to Calc: Graph Characteristics

AP Calculus

Name: ______________________ Date: _______________________

Welcome! As we begin our journey into the study of calculus, you will explore the characteristics of many functions algebraically, numerically, and graphically. Here are some vocabulary words you should be familiar with from previous math classes and you will need to use in order to accurately describe attributes of the functions. Your first assignment is to review the following terms. On a separate sheet of paper, list the vocabulary word on the left side of the paper and fill in the right side with a definition, diagram, description, and/or example to refer to as needed. This is a great opportunity to start a Calculus vocabulary section for your notebook. You may use the Calculus text as a reference as several of these terms are discussed in the beginning of Chapter 1. You may also find the website http://www.mathwords.com/ to be helpful. Feel free to use other resources as well.
TERM LIST: Domain y-intercept Even Function Decreasing Inflection Point Point-Slope Form Range Interval Notation Odd Function Concave Up Slope of a Line Secant Line Zeros of a Function Function Notation Increasing Concave Down Slope-Intercept Form Tangent Line

d = r t

The best way to be sure you understand it and remember it is to apply it to some examples. See what you can do with these 1. Find the items requested for the function shown. Use interval notation. a. b. c. d. e. f. Domain: ______________ Range: ________________ Increasing: _____________ Decreasing: ____________ Concave up: ____________ Concave down: __________

2. Use the graph shown to find the following values. a. b. c. d. Zeros: __________________ Y-Intercepts: _____________ f(0) = _______ f(-1) ______

3. In the previous graph (#1), estimate the x and y value of the point of inflection located in the first quadrant of the graph.

4. Use a graphing calculator to assist you in finding the characteristics listed for the given function. You may need to use the zoom and/or calc menus! Use interval notation for a & b.
f ( x) = x + 2 3

a. b. c. d.

domain: _____________ range: ______________ zeros: ______________ y-intercept: __________

5. Sketch the graph of a function with the following characteristics. a. b. c. d. e. zeros at x = -3 and x = 1 increasing on ( -, -1) decreasing on (-1, ) concave down on ( -, 2) concave up on ( 2, )

6. Determine whether each function is even, odd, or neither. Explain. a. f(x) = x3 x b. g(x) = x5 + 3x3 1 c. h(x) = x4 3x2 + 1

7. Find the equation of the line in Point-Slope form. Example: m = 5, P (2, -4) y (-4) = 5(x 2) y = 5(x 2) 4 Now you try one m= 3 P( -2, 7)

8. Draw a secant line and label it a. Draw a tangent line and label it b.

9. Estimate the slope of lines a and b that you drew above. a. __________________ b. __________________

9. Solve the equation d = r t for r.
