FOREWORD
The Literacy in English Language programme is the effort of the Ministry of Education to address the issue of illiteracy in English among primary school children. The best time to address this is at the foundation level of primary school, from Year 1 to Year 3. It is the Ministrys hope that by nipping the problem at its bud, the rates of literacy in English will increase and pupils will be able to communicate orally, read and write in English proficiently. This programme will start in 2013 with Year 1 pupils. The Ministry of Education has developed modules for teachers and pupils for the teaching and learning of basic literacy in English. The teachers module aims to guide teachers to teach English literacy through the phonics method. As phonics is a part of the primary English Language Curriculum, it is used as a strategy in this programme to instill basic literacy in our young. The teachers module can be fully adopted or adapted for use in the classroom. Teachers will know best how to utilise the module so that their pupils will learn to listen, speak, read and write proficiently.

PREFACE
This module aims to guide teachers in carrying out lessons in the classroom. Lessons in the module are planned according to the modular structure of listening and speaking, reading, writing and language arts. The phonics approach is the strategy used for the teaching of basic literacy in English. As the lessons have been developed to teach pupils progressively from letters to words phrases and sentences, teachers need to follow the lessons in sequence. This is to ensure that teaching is carried out in a progressive and developmental manner. As teachers follow the lessons and teach according to the units, pupils will acquire basic literacy. Teachers are free to adopt or adapt the lessons to suit the needs and level of the pupils. However, if the lessons are adapted, the sounds will still have to be taught in sequence following the framework that has been laid out. The teachers module comprises 20 units and every unit covers a full lesson in one cycle. Out of the 20 units, 16 units comprise lessons on the sounds that are to be taught while 4 units comprise lessons on blending and segmenting. Every unit in the module comes complete with teachers notes, worksheets and teaching aids in the form of word and picture cards, phrase and sentence strips.
