Greetings my brothers and sisters, Yes, you are my brothers and sisters, partners in the worship, ministry and

work of our Lord Jesus the Christ. As a family of believers we do not only come to this place we know as Fort King to sit in pews, read words, sing songs, and listen to a preacher on Sunday mornings. We come to be a family who cares for one another and the community, a family who shares the ups and downs of life, to bear one anothers burdens, together. Whats a family without a family dog or two? I am excited to let you know we are adding to the ways we care and nurture the congregation. We have received a grant to begin a Therapy Dog Ministry. A Therapy Dog is a dog who has been rigorously trained to be able to go into stressful situations and bring peace, joy, and a smile to those whom it encounters. These specially trained and licensed dogs can be taken into hospitals, assisted living centers, homes, schools or wherever else there is need. These dogs bring a sense of calm and normalcy to many situations. Members of our church and the community will soon get a chance to meet and experience the love of our newest family members; our Therapy Dogs Mr. Pee Wee and Missy. Mr. Pee Wee is a Norfolk Terrier/Pekinese and keeps Jean & Melvin Winkler company when he is not working. Missy is a Golden Doodle who tries to keep Charles Vowinkel in line during her off hours. I am thankful for the commitment of Jean and Charles as they work, together with their pups, to bring joy and peace into the lives of our brothers and sisters. We will officially welcome these lovable pastoral pups into the life and ministry of the church once they are ready to assume their roles as caregivers of the flock. Blessings my sisters and brothers,

Congregational Care Ministry Prayer Chain

Sometimes life gets tough, doesnt it! Sometimes an event occurs that takes the wind out of our sails, leaving us feeling as though the bottom has dropped out of our world. Accidents, health problems, family difficulties, and all the other incidents of a less-than-happy nature occur to all of us at some time in our lives. You need not walk through the storm alone as there are 26 members of the FKPC Prayer Chain who will pray for you, or a friend, or a loved one during those times. There have been many positive results to those who have enlisted the aid of the Prayer Chain, a testimony to the efficacy of prayer. All it takes to place your concerns before the Prayer Chain is a phone call to Onalee Mease (687-3160) who serves as coordinator. If you prefer, your concerns will not be shared outside the members of the prayer chain but please make that clear when you make the request.

Garden Tutorial
Study the picture above, which was provided by The University of Florida, and you will realize why having a densely planted landscape is the best way to protect your home against hurricane damage. Most people are afraid of trees, not understanding the great value of having them around your home. Of course, we never want to plant large trees closer than 20 feet to a house, but if you study the photo, you will see that having multiple layers, with the shorter trees closer to the house, will provide substantial buffer, and in addition, will cool the air around and in your home. Planting more trees and shrubs will make your home safer against storms, and provide lots of habitat for beneficial wildlife. Keep planting! Copyright 2013 The Garden Gate, All rights reserved.

A Bible Study of the Book of Hebrews Taught by Rhea (Ray) Forman

This class will investigate in some detail the Book of Hebrews. One goal of the study is to increase our knowledge of it and, along with prayer and meditation, increase our faith in God. A second goal is to take from it challenges we can apply to our lives. The depth of our study is an individual one, depending on ones time and interest. Some persons may want to dig deeper into passages using aids such as commentaries, etc. Others may choose to just listen and share as we move through a passage. I will provide some structure, but I welcome questions, reactions, and opinions. Finally, so no one is thrown a curve, my theological slant is left-leaning conservative/evangelical. But, whatever slant one holds, all are welcome. The class will meet in the education building, and starts Sept 8, at 9:00 as I leave early for choir. Call me at 624-3160 or e-mail me at rhforman@yahoo.com if you have any questions.

High Tide

At our first meeting on Sept 8th we will explain and start this project and also make popcorn. On Sept. 22nd our focus will be on how to think right, do right and feel right. Join us as we get excited about Scripture and enjoy Jesus as he becomes the light of our life. See you in a few weeks. Cheryl, Niki and Amy

MISSION

School Supplies
Wow! Thank you for the generous donations of classroom supplies for our teachers! We were able to give our teachers the supplies they need and to show them our support as they begin a new school year. It was a huge collection of items along with $320 in monetary donations. The collection was such a success that the Mission Ministry has decided to maintain a closet of supplies for teachers to use throughout the year. Thank you for your generosity and thoughtfulness. Blessings from, The Mission Ministry and our Marion County School Teachers

Equal Exchange Items for Sale
In 1986, Equal Exchange was founded to challenge the existing trade model, which favors large plantations, agri-business, and multi-national corporations; support small farmers; and connect consumers and producers through information, education, and the exchange of products in the marketplace. With our founding, we joined a growing movement of small farmers, alternative traders (ATOs), religious organizations, and non-profits throughout the world with like-minded principles and objectives. Underlying our work is the belief that only through organization, can small farmers survive and thrive. Items we have for sale: Regular coffee is $7; Decaf is $8; Tea is $3; Chocolate Bar is $3; Olive Oil is $11. Items for sale are under the mailboxes in the Church Office.

Globalism and The Tower of Babel
Genesis 11:1-19 is a profound critique of attempts to unify human society and community under one pattern of thought and behavior; the focus is on language. Perhaps the following will enable us to understand the depth of this story: When we study human language, we are approaching what some might call the human essence, the distinctive qualities of mind that are unique to man and that are inseparable from any critical phase of human existence, personal or social; and, The normal use of language is a creative activity. This is one fundamental factor that distinguishes human language from any known system of animal communication (Noam Chomsky 2006 Language and Mind [Cambridge] 88; my emphasis, his words). The Tower of Babel story addresses much more than just an elite group either maintaining or seeking to establish a monopoly of power by language policy. The story has its roots in the third millennium BCE (+/- 2500 BCE) Sumero-Babylonian civilization. Our approach here will be to point out very specific items that may help us understand the depth of the story. It would be helpful if the reader would read the text of Genesis 11:1-9 and then the notes below. The Hebrew text is soaked in irony and verbal sarcasm. The Tower: - The Sumero-Akkadian word is etemenanki meaning: the house of the foundation of heaven and earth. - The Assyrian-Babylonian word is ziqquratu which means Top of a mountain, that had been made by human hands! - It measured 140 by 150 ft. and stood 30 ft. high, on top of which stood two temples, some 65 ft. long, 50 ft. wide, with doors at both ends and a hallway between them (See Jack Finnegan 1954 Light From the Ancient Past 19f re URUK; W. G. Plaut 2005 The Torah 77). - The name referred to in the text is Bab-ilu meaning the Gate of God; i.e., this is the point of intersection between God and man. - There is word-play in the text: 11:7 Let us go down and babble (Hebrew nabhlah) their language. 11:9 Its name was called Babel because the Eternal One babbled (Hebrew balel) their language. Verse 2 yashav: they came up on; better, they settled because whenever this verb is used in the Torah, it means the people were overly at ease = quite comfortable! Verse 4 recites: Let us build i.e. the height of human autonomy is affirmed, in order to make a name for ourselves, i.e. so that our name, identity, will be imposed on all humanity. In Verse 7 God says: Let us go down. Genesis 1:26 says, when God was in the process of creating man (Adam-in Hebrew): Let us make man in our own image There are a couple of ways to understand these words;

10

WORSHIP (continued)
Let us refers to the multiplicity of dimensions of Gods own being, meaning that we cannot conseptualize/define God, the Eternal, any more than we can image forth infinity. In Genesis 1:26, the Eternal is addressing man (Adam=humanity) to participate cooperatively in the process of creation (Plaut Torah 21). Point: Mans attempts either - to define the parameters of the being of the Eternal One, or, - to impose our concepts on others means that we are attempting to make God and all other men in our image, i.e., so that we are the ones in control. We cannot ignore Gen. 11:5: The Eternal came down to see and v. 7: Let us go down, as if God is up there in the sky. This was their understanding at that time; why is it still ours? See Luke 17: 21 f.: The Kingdom of God is in your midst, i.e.,between you. Jesus of Nazareth said this. The Ziggurat was an attempt by human ingenuity and know-how to make the Eternal One, God, a tool to control the masses of people; to make mans word into Gods Word in order to impose not only a unified language upon the people, but, as noted above, to channel human creativity in only one direction and to claim divine legitimization for the power to direct society and control human community. If we confront what this story is saying, then we must do the following: 1. We have the responsibility to illuminate social systems and institutions that have been created to manage our lives, to channel our creativity for one end; 2. We have the responsibility to make a critical examination of the deity (either religious or secular) that is being used to control and direct our creativity; and, 3. We have the responsibility, as human beings created in the Image of God, to expose the misuse of religious, political, economic, and social power of a ruling elite. If God/the Eternal One is the unfathomable mystery of the universe and human life, then no society and no group can claim the right to impose one image upon its members as if that were the image of God. The story of Tower of Babel, finally, is a story of the ultimate expression of human presumption and arrogance (Plaut op cit. 7; see also E. Gerstenberger 2002 Theologies in the Old Testament 306f). It also says that every attempt to force-form human community or society into one channel of creative-energy is doomed to fragmentation and alienation, both between human beings and from God. Something to do about. Shalom, Tom

Confession Time
OK, I must confess. I have many, many favorite hymns. But the hymn that is my absolute favorite is Crown Him With Many Crowns. I have loved this hymn all my life. Ive played it as an offertory arrangement on many occasions. I especially like to pull out all the stops on the organ when we sing the last verse. I fully expect it to be sung with great triumph when my time comes to go home to be with the Lord. Matthew Bridges' version first appeared in 1851 with six stanzas. Twenty-three years later Godfrey Thring wrote six additional stanzas, which appeared in his collection Hymns and Sacred Lyrics. The hymn's present forrn includes stanzas one, two, and four by Bridges and the third verse by Thring. Each crown in this hymn text exalts Christ for some specific aspect of his person or ministry Stanza one for His eternal KingshipCrown Him with many crowns, The Lamb upon His throne: Hark! how the heavenly anthem drowns All music but its own! Awake, my soul, and sing Of Him who died for thee; And hail Him as thy matchless King Through all eternity. Stanza two for His love demonstrated in redemptive sufferingCrown Him the Lord of love: Behold His hands and side, Rich wounds, yet visible above, In beauty glorified; No angel in the sky Can fully bear that sight, But downward bends His wondering eye At mysteries so bright.

WORSHIP (continued)
Stanza three for His victorious resurrection and ascensionCrown Him the Lord of life: Who triumphed o'er the grave, Who rose victorious to the strife For those He came to save; His glories now we sing, Who died and rose on high. Who died eternal life to bring, And lives that death may die. Stanza four as a member of the Triune Godhead ever worthy of worship and praise. Crown Him the Lord of years: The potentate of time, Creator of the rolling spheres, Ineffably sublime. All hail, Redeemer, hail! For Thou hast died for me, Thy praise and glory shall not fail Throughout eternity. I will never forget Sunday, November 23, 2007. Mother and I were worshipping at the great Bristol Cathedral in Bristol, England. The organist played a magnificent prelude as I thumbed through the multi-paged Order of Service. I never made it to the last page because the organ was beginning to swell with magnificent sound. The very thick stone floor beneath our feet vibrated from the reverberation of the great bass pedals. All I could think was the organist was heralding the coming entrance of the wonderful Christ to our midst. The service was wonderful. As I turned to the last page of the Order of Service, much to my great delight was this magnificent hymn. The organist played a grand introduction..the congregation began to sing with joyous enthusiasm, the choir sang counter melody and descant. Prior to the last verse, the organist pulled all the stops including the tremendous mellinium trumpets. He changed keys. Tears streamed down my face. My heart pumped with abandon. My throat closed upI could not sing. I was completely overwhelmed. At that very moment in time, this hymn confirmed what I have known all my life I am what I am because of Him! With a song in my heart, Rick
